Intensive early stocking (IES) was introduced nearly a half century ago in eastern Kan­sas and has since been adopted as a major management tool to increase animal produc­tion, efficiency of production, and economic return on tallgrass rangelands. These in­creases have come almost exclusively by using IES with young stocker animals. Intensive early stocking and its gains have been proven effective repeatedly in published research. A similar modified IES (MIES) system has increased production efficiency of stocker animals on western Kansas rangelands. Tall fescue production was measured during the second year of a study with locations started in fall of 2016 and fall of 2017. In the second year at both sites, phosphorus (P) fertilization rate did not affect harvest yields. Applying nitrogen (N) in late fall or late winter resulted in greater spring yields than applying N in spring or not applying N. However, fall harvest yields at Site 1 in 2018 were greater without N, but were greater with spring N application at Site 2 in 2019. Average corn yield in 2019 was increased by 14 bu/a with knife application of pre-plant nitrogen (N) fertilizer compared with broadcast application. Applying N more than doubled yield of corn grown without N. In general, applying side-dress N increased yields compared to yields obtained with only pre-plant applications.

The exceptionally wet weather in 2019 impacted corn yield. Excessive rainfall reduced corn emergence and plant stand. Many production fields were replanted due to poor stand from flooding. In this study, corn that was planted too shallow (1 inch) or too deep (3 inches) had less yield than that planted at 2-inch depth. The best yield was observed in the corn planted on April 16, 2019. The results from this record wet year were different from previous years, when early planted corn had higher yields.

Teff grass can be a competitive summer annual forage in Kansas. Teff grass is a rapidly growing, high quality forage that could be a good option for producers in water-limited areas with a short growing season. The cultivar ‘Excalibur’ exhibited superior biomass (4280 lb/a) and crop water productivity (610 lb/a-in.), among teff cultivars. This study also indicated that biomass productivity and crop water productivity of sorghum sudangrass (696 lb/a-in.) tended to be greater than that of forage pearl millet (528 lb/a-in.). Further research into teff grass should focus on integration of teff into irrigation management systems with restricted water supply.

Two kochia accessions (KS-4A and KS-4H) were previously identified from a corn field near Garden City, KS, with multiple resistance to glyphosate (Roundup PowerMax), dicamba (Clarity), and fluroxypyr (Starane Ultra). The objectives of this research were to (1) determine the response of these kochia accessions to preemer­gence (PRE) and postemergence (POST) applied atrazine (Aatrex) in dose-response assays, and (2) determine the effectiveness of alternative POST herbicides. In 2019, summer annual forage variety trials were conducted across Kansas near Garden City, Hays, and Scandia. All sites evaluated hay and silage entries. Companies were able to enter varieties into any possible combinations of research sites, so not all sites had all varieties. Across the sites, a total of 95 hay varieties, 99 sorghum silage varieties, and 12 corn silage varieties were evaluated.

Long-term research shows that phosphorus (P) and nitrogen (N) fertilizer must be applied to optimize production of irrigated grain sorghum in western Kansas. In 2019, N applied alone increased yields 66 bu/a, whereas N and P applied together increased yields up to 85 bu/a. Averaged across the past 10 years, N and P fertilization increased sorghum yields up to 78 bu/a. Application of 160 lb/a N (with P) produced the maxi­mum yield in 2019, which is slightly more than the 10-year average. In this study, herbicides were tested to compare sequential and split rates for weed control in corn. Control of green foxtail, Russian thistle, and quinoa was excellent regardless of herbicide treatment, and most herbicides provided good kochia and Palmer amaranth control. Minor corn injury occurred with some herbicides applied early postemergence or postemergence, but did not persist. All herbicide treatments increased grain yield 56 to 78% compared to the weedy control, but yields did not differ between herbicide treatments.

In this study, herbicides were tested to compare preemergence (PRE) application for weed control in grain herbicides. All herbicides controlled quinoa and crabgrass similarly, as well as Russian thistle late in the season. Halex GT at either rate with atrazine as well as Bicep Lite II Magnum controlled Palmer amaranth less than 90% late in the season. Similarly, these herbicides along with Degree Xtra provided less than 90% kochia control late. Grain yields did not differ between herbicide-treated and non-treated sorghum.

This study compared various tank mixes of generic S-metolachlor/mesotrione and imazamox for weed control in imidazolinone-tolerant grain sorghum. All herbicides provided more than 90% control of Russian thistle, velvetleaf, and green foxtail, and kochia control late in the season was 85% or more. Puncturevine control late in the season was 80 to 90% with all herbicides except Coyote followed by KFD-365-02 and by KFD-365-02 at 6 oz/a plus atrazine followed by 2,4-D. Only Coyote followed by KFD-365-02 plus atrazine or 2,4-D controlled Palmer amaranth more than 78% late.

In 2019, N applied alone increased yields by 71 bu/a, whereas P applied alone increased yields by 10 bu/a. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of different tillage systems and nitrogen (N) fertilizers on corn yield. Higher corn yields (207 bu/a and 203 bu/a) were found under no-tillage + high (150 lb N/a) manure application, and tillage + super high manure (750 lb N/a), respectively. The trend observed for the different nitrogen fertilizers between tillage systems was the same. However, a greater corn yield was observed under no-till in comparison to tilled conditions for both high fertilizer and high manure. A study was initiated in 2018 to collect preliminary data to quantify nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions from dryland grain sorghum in western Kansas. Results indicate that the greatest flux of N2O occurred within the first 14 days after fertilization when plant uptake was minimal and soil moisture was elevated. During this time period, the timing and amount of rainfall was critical with respect to N2O flux. Nitrous oxide flux during the fallow phase was negligible. The cumulative emissions factor for fertilizer-derived N2O estimated for Colby (~0.3%) is well below the Intergovernmental Panel …

This study was conducted from 2008–2019 at the Kansas State University Southwest Research- Extension Center near Tribune, KS. The purpose of the study was to identify whether more intensive cropping systems can enhance and stabilize production in rainfed cropping systems to optimize economic crop production, more efficiently capture and utilize scarce precipitation, and maintain or enhance soil resources and environmental quality. The crop rotations evaluated were continuous grain sorghum (SS), wheat-fallow (WF), wheat-corn-fallow (WCF), wheat-sorghum-fallow (WSF), wheat-corn-sorghum-fallow (WCSF), and wheat-sorghum-corn-fallow (WSCF). A limited irrigation study involving four cropping systems and evaluating four crop rotations was initiated in 2012 at the Southwest Research-Extension Center near Tribune, KS. The cropping systems were two annual systems (continuous corn [C-C] and continuous grain sorghum [GS-GS]) and two 2-year systems (corn-grain sorghum [C-GS] and corn-winter wheat [C-W]). In 2019, corn yields were similar for all rotations, although averaged across the past 7 years, corn yields were greater following wheat than following corn. A field study initiated in 2006 at the Southwest Research-Extension Center near Tribune, KS, was designed to evaluate the effects of three wheat stubble heights on subsequent grain yields of corn and grain sorghum. Corn and sorghum yields in 2019 were greater than the long-term average. When averaged from 2007 through 2019, corn grain yields were 8–9 bu/a greater when planted into either high or strip-cut stubble than into low-cut stubble. Forage production is important for the western Kansas region’s livestock and dairy industries and has become increasingly important as irrigation-well capacity declines. Forages require less water than grain crops and may allow for increased cropping intensity and opportunistic cropping. Being able to estimate forage production is important for determining forage availability versus forage needs. Data from several studies were used to quantify annual forage yield response to plant available water (PAW) at planting and growing season precipitation (GSP). In addition, water use efficiency was quantified. Forages evaluated included winter triticale, spring triticale, and forage sorghum.

In this study, herbicides were tested to compare application of single and sequential treatments for weed control in corn. Quinoa and Russian thistle control was 95% or more regardless of herbicide treatment. Anthem Maxx, Resicore, and Corvus followed by Harness Max provided good control of Palmer amaranth. Acuron applied preemergence and Anthem Maxx plus Callisto and atrazine early postemergence were less effective on kochia than other herbicides, whereas Anthem Maxx plus Callisto and atrazine applied preemergence and Halex GT applied early postemergence were less effective on green foxtail. The objective of this project was to evaluate winter wheat grain yield and grain protein concentration responses to nitrogen (N) rate in the state of Kansas during the 2018–2019 growing season. Experiments evaluating the response of the wheat variety Zenda to four nitrogen rates (0, 50, 100, and 150 lb N/a) were established at four locations. In-season measurements included flag leaf N concentration, grain yield, yield components, and grain protein concentration. Nitrogen (N) fertilizer represents a significant annual cost for farmers. Additionally, N losses pose environmental concerns and represent loss of resources. Proven, an N fixing bacterial inoculant for corn developed by Pivot Bio (Berkeley, CA) is expected to fix between 20 and 30 lb N/a over a growing season. The use of bacterial inoculants to fix N for corn reduces the risk of N loss through leaching and volatilization by reducing the amount of inorganic fertilizers required to maximize yield.
