A total of 252 pigs (DNA 600 × 241, initially 238.8 lb) were used in a 21-d trial to determine the effects of replacing soybean meal (SBM) with soy protein concentrate (SPC) in diets containing 12% crude protein (CP) on growth performance of finishing pigs from 240 to 280 lb. Pens of 7 or 8 pigs were allotted by body weight (BW) and randomly assigned to 1 of 4 dietary treatments with 8 replications per treatment. Control of kochia, quinoa, and green foxtail was complete with all herbicides at 78 days after treatment (DAT). Palmer amaranth, common sunflower, and crabgrass was 97% at 8 DAT. By 78 DAT, common sunflower control was complete with all herbicides. Crabgrass control at 78 DAT was excellent except when Diflexx Duo (dicamba + tembotrione) at 24 oz/a + atrazine was mixed with glyphosate or Liberty. All herbicide-treated corn yielded 111 to 126 bu/a more grain than the untreated controls. The various additions to the premixes improved weed control to the point that no difference occurred among them for yield.

Two experiments were conducted to determine the effects of distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS) source and soybean meal (SBM) level on growth performance of late nursery pigs. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of pork hot carcass weight on consumer palatability ratings of top loin chops. Pork loins (n = 200) were collected from 4 different hot carcass weight groups: light weight group (less than 246.5 lb; LT), medium-light weight group (246.5 to 262.5 lb; MLT), medium-heavy weight group (262.5 to 276.5 lb; MHVY), and a heavy weight group (276.5 lb and greater; HVY). Kochia, Russian thistle, and quinoa control was excellent regardless of treatment or rating date. Sunflower control at 10 DAPT was very good when Anthem Maxx (pyroxasulfone + fluthiacet) + Solstice (fluthiacet + mesotrione) + atrazine and glyphosate were applied EPOST, while green foxtail control was 94% with the same treatment at 68 DAPT. Palmer amaranth and green foxtail control at 68 DAPT was 93 and 91%, respectively, when SureStart II (acetochlor + flumetsulam + clopyralid) + atrazine and glyphosate were applied PRE followed by glyphosate POST. MaxQ tall fescue, a wheat-bermudagrass double-crop system, and a wheat-crabgrass double-crop system have been three of the most promising grazing systems evaluated at the Kansas State University Southeast Agricultural Research Center in the past 20 years, but these systems have never been compared directly in the same study. The objective of this study was to compare grazing and subsequent finishing performance of stocker steers that grazed these three systems.

Tall fescue (Lolium arundinaceum Schreb.) is the most widely grown forage grass in southeastern Kansas. Its tolerance to extremes in climate and soils of the region is partly attributable to its association with a fungal endophyte, Neotyphodium coenophialum; however, most ubiquitous endophytes are also responsible for production of substances toxic to some herbivores, including cattle, sheep, and horses. The rapid development of glyphosate resistance in kochia has increased the use of auxinic herbicides (dicamba and fluroxypyr) in the US Great Plains, including Kansas. The objectives of this study were to determine the forage yield, nutritive value, and water use efficiency of teff grass (Eragrostis tef) under field conditions as compared to sorghum sudangrass and forage pearl millet. Water use efficiency was determined by regressing above-ground biomass on crop water use between sampling periods. Yield was determined by quadrat area clippings of above-ground biomass. Sodium metabisulfite (SMB)-based feed additive efficacy was evaluated in 3 nursery pig growth experiments where pigs were fed diets containing low deoxynivalenol (< 1.5 ppm; DON) concentrations. Pigs were weaned at approximately 22 d of age and randomly allotted to pens with one pen of 27 gilts and one pen of 27 barrows per fence line feeder, thus feeder was the experimental unit. In experiment 1, 2,268 pigs were used in a 35-d trial with 21 feeders per treatment. Experimental treatments included a control diet or the control with 0.50% SMB-based Product 1 (Defusion; Provimi, Brooksville, OH) fed in phase 1 and 0.25% fed in phases 2 and 3, then all pigs were fed a control diet for the last week of the study. Pigs fed Product 1 had greater (P < 0.05) average daily gain (ADG), average daily feed intake (ADFI), and feed/gain ratio (F/G) compared to pigs fed the control diet from d 0 to 28. However, from d 28 to 35, the opposite response was observed, with pigs fed the control diet having greater ADG and improved F/G than pigs previously fed Product 1. Despite this response, pigs fed Product 1 were heavier (P < 0.05) on d 35 than control-fed pigs. In experiment 2, 4,320 pigs were used in a 42-d trial with 8 or 16 feeders per treatment. Pigs were fed a control diet or diets with either SMB-based Product 1 or Product 2 (Nutriquest, Mason City, IA) at different concentrations and durations. Among the various treatments, Product 1 or Product 2 concentrations ranged from 0.50% initially to 0.25%, 0.15%, or none the last week of the study. Overall, pigs fed either of the additives at the highest concentrations and for the longest period of time had greater (P < 0.05) ADG and ADFI compared to pigs fed the control diet, with those fed lower concentrations or shorter durations intermediate. In experiment 3, 2,808 pigs were used in a 28-d trial with 13 feeders per treatment. All pigs were fed a common diet for 7 d after weaning. Pigs were then either fed a control diet or diets containing Product 1 (0.50 and 0.25% from d 0 to 21 and 21 to 28 respectively), SMB (0.50 and 0.25% from day 0 to 21 and 21 to 28 respectively) or 0.25% SMB from day 0 to 28. Overall, pigs fed Product 1 or high SMB diets had greater (P < 0.05) ADG compared to pigs fed low SMB or control diets. Collectively, these studies suggest that in diets with low DON concentrations, these SMB-based products increased ADG compared to pigs fed control diets.

Distillers grains, a by-product of the ethanol industry, have tremendous potential as an economical and nutritious supplement for grazing cattle. Objective: The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of annual prescribed burning applied during the growing season on vigor of sericea lespedeza (Lespedeza cuneata) infesting native tallgrass range.

Objective: The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of 4 consecutive years of prescribed fire applied to native tallgrass range in either April, August, or September on forage biomass production, soil cover, and basal plant cover.

Study Description: Nine fire-management units (14 ± 6 acres) were burned at 1 of 3 prescribed times: early spring (April 1), mid-summer (August 1), or late summer (September 1). Plant species composition and soil cover were assessed annually each July using a modified step-point technique.

Objective: The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of a one-time application of late summer prescribed fire followed by fall herbicide application for substantially reducing sericea lespedeza frequency and vigor.

Study Description: A single 80-acre native tallgrass pasture was divided into 16 units. Objectives: Study effects of two limit-fed diets formulated to provide two levels of dietary energy and offered at two different intake rates to target similar gains and analyze the efficacy of a novel DNA-immunostimulant administered on arrival.

Study Description: A 56-day pen study was conducted utilizing 370 Angus × Brahman heifers shipped from Florida (1,455 mi) to study the effects of limit-feeding at 2 intakes based on prior research conducted at the Kansas State University Beef Stocker Unit, Manhattan, KS, to achieve similar gains and effects of Zelnate under the dietary conditions.

Objective: The goals of this study were to identify feet and leg indicator traits to be used in beef breed genetic evaluations and develop a scoring method that can be easily adopted by cattle producers.

Description: Data were analyzed on 1,885 Red Angus cattle, and after editing, 1,720 records were used for analysis. Feet and leg phenotypes were obtained from August 2015 through September 2017 for 14 traits shown in the following table. Objective: Determine the efficacy of providing salt alone or with injectable trace minerals compared to a complete mineral supplement and growth implants for improving the growth of stocker calves grazing native grass pastures in the Flint Hills region of Kansas.

Study Description: The experiment was conducted on eight native tallgrass pastures located in Woodson County, KS, at the Kansas State University Bessner Range Research Unit during the 2015 and 2016 growing season.
