A total of 21 litters (early or late maturing Duroc × DNA 241) and 247 pigs were used in 170-d trial to determine the effect of sire line growth pattern (early vs. late maturing) and creep feeding on the stress response, intestinal permeability, and growth performance of nursery and finishing pigs.Treatments were arranged in a 2 × 2 factorial with main effect of Duroc sire line (early or late maturing) and lactation creep feeding (with or without). Immediately after weaning (initially 14.0 lb), blood cortisol levels were increased (P < 0.01) in late maturing pigs compared to early maturing pigs, indicating an increased stress response. A greater percentage (P < 0.001) of late maturing pigs lost weight from d 0 to 3 post-weaning compared to early maturing pigs. Likewise, early maturing pigs had improved ADG (P < 0.001) and ADFI (P < 0.001) during the first 3 d in the nursery. A similar response was observed in daily feed intake with early maturing pigs having increased daily feed intake (P < 0.001) for the first 14 d in the nursery. However, no differences were observed in intestinal permeability between treatments. For overall nursery growth performance, a significant interaction was observed for ADG (P = 0.007) and ADFI ( …

A total of 340 weaned pigs (Line 241 × 600, DNA; initially 11.2 lb BW) were used in a 45-d study to evaluate previous sow treatment (control vs. yeast additives) and nursery diets with or without added yeast-based pre- and probiotics (Phileo by Lesaffre, Milwaukee, WI) on antimicrobial resistance (AMR) patterns of fecal Escherichia coli. At placement in the nursery, pigs were housed by pen based on sow treatment and randomly assigned to 1 of 2 dietary treatments with 5 pigs per pen and 17 pens per treatment. Treatments were arranged in a 2 × 2 factorial with main …

A total of 350 weanling pigs (200 × 400, DNA; initially, 12.5 ± 0.3 lb BW) were used in a 42-d study with 5 pigs per pen and 14 replicate pens per treatment. At weaning, pigs were allotted to pens in a completely randomized design and pens of pigs were randomly assigned to one of five dietary treatments: 1) negative control (standard nursery diet with no additives); 2) control diet with 3,000 ppm ZnO included in phase 1 and 2,000 ppm ZnO included in phase 2; 3) control diet with 0.7% formic acid (Amasil NA, BASF, Florham, NJ); 4) control …

A total of 695 barrows (DNA Line 200 × 400; initially 12.9 lb) were used in two groups in a 28-d study to evaluate the effects of added dietary calcium carbonate on phase 1 nursery pig growth performance and fecal dry matter. Upon arrival to the nursery research facility, pigs were randomly assigned to pens (5 pigs per pen) and pens were allotted to 1 of 5 dietary treatments with 27 or 28 pens per treatment. Dietary treatments were formulated to provide 0, 0.45, 0.90, 1.35, and 1.80% calcium carbonate added at the expense of corn. Analyzed Ca for treatment …

A total of 350 barrows (DNA Line 200 × 400; initially 13.5 ± 0.02 lb) were used in a 42-d study to evaluate the effects of a dried fermentation product administered through drinking water on nursery pig growth performance, antibiotic injection frequency, fecal consistency, and fecal E. coli presence. Upon arrival to the nursery research facility, pigs were randomly assigned to pens (5 pigs per pen) and pens were allotted to 1 of 2 water treatments with 35 pens per treatment. Water treatments were provided with or without a fermentation product administered through the water lines at a 1:128 dilution …

Evaluation Of Vegetable Protein Sources On Nursery Pig Performance In A Commercial Environment, Rafe Q. Royall, Joel M. Derouchey, Mike D. Tokach, Jason C. Woodworth, Robert D. Goodband, Jordan T. Gebhardt, Keith D. Haydon

Kansas Agricultural Experiment Station Research Reports

This experiment was conducted to determine the effect of vegetable protein sources on growth and economic performance of nursery pigs in a commercial research environment. A total of 2,592 pigs (L337 × 1050, PIC; initial BW of 11.8 ± 0.11 lb) were used in a 42-d study. Pens of pigs were blocked by BW and weaning date and allotted to 1 of 6 dietary treatments in a randomized complete block design with 27 pigs per pen and 16 replications per treatment across 2 rooms. Similar numbers of barrows and gilts were placed in each pen. There were six dietary treatments …
