A greater percentage (P < 0.001) of late maturing pigs lost weight from d 0 to 3 post-weaning compared to early maturing pigs. Likewise, early maturing pigs had improved ADG (P < 0.001) and ADFI (P < 0.001) during the first 3 d in the nursery. A similar response was observed in daily feed intake with early maturing pigs having increased daily feed intake (P < 0.001) for the first 14 d in the nursery. However, no differences were observed in intestinal permeability between treatments. For overall nursery growth performance, a significant interaction was observed for ADG (P = 0.007) and ADFI ( …

The objective of this study was to determine the effects of different CP levels and AA to Lys ratios on growth performance and carcass characteristics in late finishing pigs. A total of 1,682 pigs (327 × 1050, PIC, Hendersonville, TN; initially 252.7 lb BW) were used in a 25-d growth trial arranged in an unbalanced randomized complete block design with 25 pigs per pen and initially 8 or 16 pens per treatment. Dietary treatments were arranged in a 2 × 2 …

Kansas Agricultural Experiment Station Research Reports

A total of 256 pigs (Line 600 × 241, DNA Columbus, NE) were used in a 72-d trial to determine the effect of dietary chromium (chromium propionate; Kemin Industries, Des Moines, IA) and space allowance on performance and carcass characteristics of finishing pigs. Pens were blocked by initial weight and randomly assigned to treatments with 8 pigs per pen and 8 pens per treatment. Treatments were arranged in a 2 × 2 factorial with main effects of diet (control or added chromium, 200 ppb) and 2 space allowances (9.8 ft2 - normal and 6.8 ft2 – restricted). Adding …

Kansas Agricultural Experiment Station Research Reports

A total of 1,089 pigs (PIC 280 ×1050; initially 82.2 lb) were used in a 105-d experiment to determine the effects of increasing added Cu from either CuSO4 alone or a 50/50 blend of CuSO4 and Cu-AA (Availa®-Cu, Zinpro Corporation, Eden Prairie, MN) on growth performance, carcass characteristics, and economics of finishing pigs. All 6 dietary treatments contained 17 ppm Cu from CuSO4 from the trace mineral premix. Additional treatment diets contained added CuSO4 to provide 70 and 130 ppm total Cu or a 50/50 blend of added Cu from CuSO4 and Cu-AA …

Kansas Agricultural Experiment Station Research Reports

A study was conducted to determine the effects of increasing chromium propionate (KemTRACE Cr; Kemin Industries Inc., Des Moines, IA) and feeding regimen on growth performance and carcass characteristics of finishing pigs housed in a commercial environment. There were a total of 1,206 pigs (PIC 337 × 1050; initial BW = 63.2 lb) with 27 pigs/pen and 9 pens/treatment. Pigs were split by gender upon arrival at the facility, with 4 blocks of each gender and a final mixed gender block. Gender blocks were randomly allotted to groups of 5 pen locations within the barn. Diets were corn-soybean meal-dried distillers …

The objective of this study was to estimate the nutritional requirement of standardized ileal digestible (SID) Lys on growth performance and economics of 230- to 280-lb finishing pigs housed in a commercial environment and fed diets not containing ractopamine HCl. A total of 1,101 gilts (PIC L327 × 1050, initially 233.4 lb BW) were used in a 28-d growth trial. Pens were blocked by BW and were randomly assigned to diets with 27 pigs per pen and 7 pens per treatment in a randomized complete block design. Diets were corn and soybean meal-based and fed in meal form, with dietary …

A total of 405 pigs (PIC 327 × 1050) from 2 consecutive finishing groups (group 1 initially 145 ± 3.9 lb, group 2 initially 134 ± 5.5 lb) were used to examine the effects of stocking density on finishing pig growth performance and carcass characteristics. Pigs were randomly allotted to pens upon entry into the finishing facility. Pens of pigs were balanced by initial BW and randomly allotted to 1 of 3 treatments with either 7 or 8 replications per treatment (group 1 and 2, respectively). Pens were stocked with 9 pigs, and adjustable gates provided treatments that allowed for …

Data from existing literature examining the influence of floor space allowance on the growth of finishing pigs were used to develop prediction equations for ADG, ADFI, and G:F. Two sets of databases were used. The first database included information from studies examining the influence of floor space allowance. The second database included the aforementioned literature, along with papers examining the impact of floor space after pigs were removed from the pen (topping). The first database included 27, 25, and 25 papers for ADG, ADFI, and G:F, respectively. The second database included 30, 28, and 28 papers for ADG, ADFI, and …
