Lichenized And Lichenicolous Fungi Of Gevne Valley (Konya, Antalya), Mustafa Kocakaya, Mehmet Gökhan Halici, Ahmet Aksoy

Turkish Journal of Botany

The lichen and lichenicolous fungi of Gevne Valley in the provinces of Konya and Antalya are presented. From 47 localities, 215 lichen and 18 lichenicolous fungi are reported for a total 233 infrageneric taxa. Four taxa are new records for Turkey: Lecanora flowersiana H.Magn., L. invadens H.Magn., Psora cerebriformis W.A.Weber, and Rinodina colobinoides (Nyl.) Zahlbr. Detailed information on these 4 taxa is provided along with photographs.

Potassium Fertilization Mitigates The Adverse Effects Of Drought On Selected Zea Mays Cultivars, Lixin Zhang, Mei Gao, Shengxiu Li, Ashok Kumar Alva, Muhammad Ashraf

In the present study, the role of potassium (K) in mitigating the adverse effects of drought stress (DS) on 2 maize (Zea mays L.) cultivars, 'Shaandan 9' (S_{9}; drought-tolerant) and 'Shaandan 911' (S_{911}; drought-sensitive), was assessed. K application increased dry matter (DM) across all growth stages and grain yield (GY) in both cultivars under DS, but not under control conditions. Drought-tolerant cultivar S_9 was superior to drought-sensitive cultivar S_{911} under DS in terms of DM and GY regardless of K addition. Tamarix L. accessions were collected from Sistan and Baluchestan Province of Iran, covering an area of about 60 km located in the southeast of Iran. The present investigation was performed to study the genetic structure of Tamarix populations in this province and present some information about gene flow among these populations. Forty-two tree specimens were randomly collected and studied for molecular and morphological diversity. Campanula Alisan-Kilincii (Campanulaceae), A New Species From Eastern Anatolia, Turkey, Hasan Yildirim, Serdar Gökhan Şenol

Campanula alisan-kilincii Yıldırım & Şenol (Campanulaceae) is described and illustrated as a new species from Malatya Province in eastern Anatolia, Turkey. The new species belongs to the section Rupestres, based on morphological features. It is morphologically similar to Campanula quercetorum and C. strigillosa but clearly differs from them based on the morphological differences presented in the species description. In addition, the conservation status, the distribution map, and notes on the biogeography and ecology of the new species are given.

Gladiolus Osmaniyensis (Iridaceae), A New Species From South Anatolia, Turkey, Mehmet Sağiroğlu, Gençay Akgül

A new species, Gladiolus osmaniyensis Sağıroğlu (Iridaceae), is described and illustrated from South Anatolia, Turkey. G. osmaniyensis is morphologically close to G. attilae and G. atroviolaceus. The ecology and phenology of the new species as well as its etymology, conservation status, and diagnostic morphological features are discussed. In addition, the seed surfaces of the G. osmaniyensis, G. attilae, and G. atroviolaceus are examined by SEM. The geographical distribution of the new species and the morphologically related species are mapped as well.

In this research, the morphological, anatomical, palynological, and cytological characteristics of the section Alopecuroidei DC. species belonging to genus Astragalus L. in Turkey were studied. As a result of this study, the members of the Alopecuroidei section represented by 22 taxa were evaluated under 24 taxa. While 3 taxa were reduced to synonyms, 4 new taxa have been added to the literature. The morphology, histochemistry, and ultrastructure of foliar mucilage-producing trichomes of Harpagophytum procumbens are investigated using a combination of light and electron microscopy. The leaves of H. procumbens bear short and long glandular trichomes comprising 1 or 2 basal epidermal cells, a stalk of 1-3 cells, a short neck cell, and a head of 2-5 cells. These trichomes are distributed on both leaf sides with a greater abundance on the abaxial side. Both types of trichomes secrete copious amounts of secretion as droplets onto the leaf surface, and the release occurs through micropores in the head cuticles. The secreted material is …

Most of the species from the genus Centaurium Hill readily hybridize between themselves in natural habitats. Artificial interspecific hybrid plants were obtained under in vitro conditions using reciprocal crosses between 4 species: Centaurium erythraea, C. littorale, C. maritimum, and C. pulchellum. Among 76 crossing experiments performed, 3 types of crosses produced seeds and gave 20 interspecific hybrid plants. Nuclear DNA quantification, fingerprinting of molecular markers, and determination of variation in main secondary metabolite content were employed to confirm their hybrid nature. To determine whether the expression of iron superoxide dismutase (Fe-SOD) and manganese superoxide dismutase (Mn-SOD) increase superoxide-scavenging capacity, and thereby improve the survival rate of chilling sensitive (chs) mutants of Arabidopsis, 4 chs mutant (chs1-1, chs1-2, chs2-1, and chs2-2) and wild-type plants were grown under low (chilling, 13 °C; cold, 4 °C) and normal growth (23 °C) temperatures. The effects of salinity on growth, osmotic adjustment, and antioxidative responses were evaluated in Apera intermedia. For this purpose, 30-day-old plants were irrigated every other day with Hoagland nutrient solution containing 0, 150, 300, or 600 mM NaCl for 7 and 14 days. The results showed inhibition of growth, relative growth rate, relative water content, and osmotic potential with increasing NaCl concentration. Increased Na^+, Cl^-, and Na^{+}/K^+ ratio and decreased K^+ and Ca^{2+} were determined with increasing NaCl concentrations. The recovery ability of barley plants from salt stress conditions was assessed using foliar application of salicylic acid (SA) in a study conducted under controlled conditions. The barley plants (Hordeum vulgare L. 'Reyhan') were subjected to saline water with varying salinity levels (tap water 0.67 dS m^{-1} as control, 3, 6, 9, and 12 dS m^{-1}) from 14 to 42 days after sowing (DAS). Flora inhabiting gypsum outcrops in arid environments shows a high level of specialization. However, the processes involved are still unclear, specifically at the key stage of germination. Here, to assess whether gypsum could chemically influence seed germination, we tested the germination of species according to 3 functional groups: gypsophiles, gypsovags, and calcicoles. Uludağ Mountain is one of the Important Plant Areas of Turkey. Its native plant species are threatened by various human and environmental factors. In this study, 2 different micropropagation techniques, with Murashige Skoog (MS) and modified MS (ModMS) media, were used for Erodium sibthorpianum Boiss. subsp. sibthorpianum. Mineral composition was developed according to the plant requirements. Shoot tips were cultured on these media. Seedlings, obtained from in vitro germinated seeds, were used as explant sources in micropropagation studies. The aim of this research is to test the Q phytoplankton assemblage index based on phytoplankton functional groups in Lake Mogan and to provide a quality state estimation by data from 2006. Phytoplankton was sampled at 2 stations of the lake, paralleled with physical (water temperature, Secchi depth, pH, conductivity) and chemical (DO, chlorophyll-\alpha, alkalinity, total hardness, soluble reactive phosphorus, total phosphorus, NO_{2}-N, NO_{3}-N, NH_{3}-N) analyses. The Q index was able to follow the main seasonal changes of the physical and chemical parameters and indicated a moderate ecological status for Lake Mogan. The self-incompatibility (SI) of 3 Middle East Veronica species (V. filiformis, V. gentianoides, V. teucrium) is studied, for the first time, by pollination and pollen tube growth experiments. Cytological observations of the self-pollen tubes within the pistils permit a conclusion about the presence of a gametophytic SI system in the first 2 species. The investigated population of the third is self-compatible and confirms the facultative trait of its self-sterility. In 2009, matK and rbcL were accepted as a 2-locus DNA barcode to classify plant species by the Consortium for the Barcode of Life Plant Working Group. Inter-simple sequence repeat (ISSR) and inter-retrotransposon amplified polymorphism (IRAP) techniques were used to investigate the genetic diversity among species of the genus Secale L. Chromosomal distribution of the AAC simple sequence repeat was examined by means of the fluorescent in situ hybridization technique. Comparative analysis revealed differences in the distribution of analyzed sequences in the genomes of Secale species. Onopordum hasankeyfense Pınar & Behçet (Asteraceae: Cardueae) from south-eastern Anatolia, Turkey, is described. This species grows on the rocky slopes beneath the Hasankeyf castle in the Hasankeyf District (C8, Batman province). Morphologically, the new species is related to Onopordum anatolicum (Boiss.) Boiss. & Heldr. ex Eig, a species endemic to central and western Anatolia, and O. acanthium L. Study On Seed Morphometry Of Some Threatened Western Himalayan Orchids, Jagdeep Verma, Kusum Sharma, Kranti Thakur, Jaspreet Kaur Sembi, Suraj Prakash Vij

Physical seed characteristics of 32 threatened Western Himalayan orchids belonging to 23 genera of 3 subfamilies were studied using light and scanning electron microscopy. The species showed remarkable seed shape variations (fusiform, spathulate, ovoid, filiform) irrespective of their taxonomic position. Epiphytes produced relatively small-sized seeds compared to their terrestrial, lithophytic, or mycoheterotrophic counterparts. Seeds were truncated (length/width < 6.0) in 27 species, and were mostly elongated (length/width = 19.957 ± 1.459) in the orchidoid species Goodyera biflora (Lindl.) Hook.f. The number or size of testa cells was found fairly consistent at the genus level, and their walls were straight, sinuous, or undulate. Periclinal walls possessed vertical or oblique ornamentation in 6 species, which is of taxonomic implication. Embryos were rather tiny and most of the seed space (even >90% in 7 species) was occupied by air. The highest seed to embryo volume ratio was recorded in terrestrial Liparis odorata (Willd.) Lindl. and the lowest in epiphytic Rhynchostylis retusa (L.) Blume, both of which are members of the advanced Epidendroideae. Seed characteristics …

Understanding how phenotype trait expression varies at different levels of biological organization is crucial to understanding the fundamental ecological, evolutionary, and developmental issues that contribute to adaptive plasticity. This is particularly important in plants because of their modular organization. Here, we study plasticity in flower production in response to light intensity at 3 levels of biological organization (between populations, among individuals, and within individuals) in Emex spinosa (L.) Anthropogenic activities contaminate soils with heavy metal concentrations including lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), and chromium (Cr). Pb has higher potential for ready accumulation, sedimentation, and poisoning of the soil than other heavy metals. The present study was conducted to induce Pb tolerance, in solution culture-grown cotton, by exogenous glycinebetaine (GB) application using 3 levels of Pb (0, 50, and 100 µm) and 2 GB levels (0 and 1 mM). We studied protein mobilisation in Asphodelus aestivus Brot. (Liliaceae) during a 1-year period. The activities of 3 proteolytic enzymes, endopeptidase (EP), leucine aminopeptidase (LAP), and carboxypeptidase (CP), together with soluble protein levels and total nitrogen and water content in root tubers were investigated. We found that protein mobilisation continued throughout the year. The highest levels of the 3 proteolytic enzymes were found in different months: LAP in December (1.19 ± 0.19 µmol pNA/g FW), CP in February (14.19 ± 1.13 µmol Leu/g FW), and EP in May (5.18 ± 0.12 U/h). Land reclamation causes weedy species to replace wild plant species. The present study characterizes the community of Brassica tournefortii Gouan in reclaimed areas of the Nile Delta of Egypt to determine its ecological amplitude, soil factors controlling its distribution, and its allelopathic control. In order to verify some doubtful collections of Scleroderma Pers. species from Macedonia, 54 specimens were revised using morphological and molecular analyses. The 12 internal transcribed spacer of nuclear ribosomal DNA (ITS nrDNA) sequences obtained in this study were compared with previously published sequences included in public databases. According to the barcoding sequences, some Macedonian Scleroderma specimens were confirmed to belong to 4 species: S. areolatum Ehrenb., S. bovista Fr., S. meridionale Demoulin & Malençon, and S. verrucosum (Vaill.) Pers.

In this study, an attempt has been made to establish macrofungal specimens collected from Antalya between 2005 and 2009. After field and laboratory studies, 136 taxa belonging to 40 families and 2 divisions were identified. Twenty taxa belong to Ascomycota and 116 to Basidiomycota. Three of them, Cortinarius subferrugineus (Batsch) Fr., Entoloma vernum Lundell, and Inocybe piceae Stangl & Schwöbel, are new records for Turkey.

Eight species of discomycetous fungi found in the forests of the Kharkiv region for the first time in Ukraine are described: Dermea acerina (Peck) Rehm, Chlorencoelia versiformis (Pers.) J.R.Dixon, Arachnopeziza aurata Fuckel, Arachnopeziza obtusipila Grélet, Hyaloscypha intacta Svrcek, Lachnum brevipilosum Baral, Pezizella vulgaris (Fr.) Sacc., and Gyromitra fastigiata (Krombh.) Rehm. Original illustrations, descriptions, and data on the distribution of these species in the world are given.
