Phosphorus (P) management is typically done with a focus on the long term, given its impact on soil fertility. The main objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of long-term P placement on corn and soybean yields under a minimum tillage system in Kansas. Long-term research trials were established in Scandia (irrigated field) and Ottawa (rainfed) in 2006. A long-term cover crop experiment was established in 2007 at Ashland Bottoms near Manhattan, KS, to determine the effect of cover crops and nitrogen (N) rates on subse­quent corn growth and yield in a wheat-corn-soybean rotation. Treatments included chemical fallow, double crop soybean, different cover crops (cereal rye, crimson clover, a mix of cereal rye and crimson clover, and a diverse mix of seven species) planted in late summer after wheat harvest, and five N rates (0, 40, 80, 160, and 240 lb/acre) applied to the subsequent corn crop. Fertilization is a critical management tool to improve crop productivity. Corn requires more N fertilizer than some other crops, but the fertility needs of the crop vary based on the growing environment. In this study, we used a modeling approach to examine the historical record and delineate the interaction between fertilizer and weather on the sensitivity of corn yield to climate in southeastern Kansas. Providing optimal fertilizer can improve corn yield. However, too much fertilizer can be expensive and wasteful. This study demonstrated that the climate resilience of corn is moderated by how much fertilizer is applied. The model results …

Plant tissue samples can be used to assess nutrient concentrations and the response to phosphorus fertilization. This study aimed to identify critical phosphorus tissue concentrations for corn and soybean at different growing stages. The experiment was conducted at 23 locations for corn in 2021–2022 and 12 locations for soybean in 2017–2020 across Kansas. Tissue samples were collected from whole corn plants at the V6 stage, corn ear leaves at the R1 stage, and whole soybean plants at the V4 stage, and upper trifoliate leaves at the R2 soybean stage. Soybean and corn varieties were tested in replicated field trials at the Southeast Research and Extension Center in Parsons through the Kansas State University variety testing program. In total, nine corn varieties and three maturity checks were tested. Fourteen full season and ten double-cropped soybean varieties were tested, with three maturity checks. Additionally, sorghum and sunflower varieties were tested. The 2022 summer crop growing season was challenging. High temperatures and low rainfall reduced crop production. This experiment was conducted to determine the optimum feeding strategy of a modified corn protein product (MCP; P4000; Cargill Starches, Sweeteners, & Texturizers, Blair, NE) on growth performance and fecal dry matter of nursery pigs. A total of 360 barrows (DNA 200 × 400; initially 12.0 ± 0.14 lb) were used in a 42-d growth trial. Trends from a tillage study conducted since 2011 have shown no clear differences between tillage systems for either corn or soybeans in lighter soils under irrigation. One year out of eight years has shown a yield advantage for either corn or soybeans for any tillage system, which appears to be related to environmental conditions experienced during the season. Averaged across all years of the study, the treatments with deep tillage either every or every-other year had about 4.5% higher corn yields, and soybeans had up to a 3.2% yield increase with some form of tillage.

The objective of this trial was to compare Assure II (quizalofop) at two rates with or without tank mix partners for grass control in fallow. Assure II at either rate alone provided similar control of volunteer corn and barley. Corn control was 90% or more regardless of rating date with all herbicides except Assure II at 8.0 oz/a plus Classic (chlorimuron) at 42 days after treatment (DAT). Tacoma (fenoxaprop) at 3.5 or 5.4 oz/a added to Assure II at 8.0 oz/a improved barley control later in the season.

The pelleting and extrusion processes use both thermal and mechanical energies to alter the crystalline structure of the starch granule, which makes it more digestible than raw starch. The objective of this trial was to compare Katagon (tolpyralate/nicosulfuron) to standard treatments for weed control in corn. Katagon plus atrazine applied early postemergence was as effective as any herbicide tested on the weeds present. When application timing was delayed to late postemergence, most herbicides were less effective. Early season corn injury was minor and did not persist. Although most herbicide treatments increased yields relative to the non-treated control, yields were generally best when any treatment was applied early postemergence.

The objective of this study was to compare season-long weed control from single and sequential herbicide applications in corn. Control of all weed species was generally good (90% or more) early in the season regardless of preemergence (PRE) herbicide. However, Russian thistle and Palmer amaranth control was best later in the season when a PRE herbicide was followed by a postemergence (POST) treatment. While all herbicide treatments increased yields compared to the untreated control, yields were greatest when Lumax EZ PRE (atrazine/mesotrione/metolachlor) was followed by Acuron (atrazine/bicyclopyrone/mesotrione/metolachlor) and glyphosate POST.

Spider mite populations peaked during the week of August 19 and declined rapidly by August 26. Mite populations were made up entirely of two-spotted spider mites (Tetranychus urticae). The Portal with Exponent, Oberon, and Zeal treatments provided the best season-long control in this trial while Portal, Onager, and Mitomax II provided the most control 14 to 21 days after treatment. The lowest overall reduction in predatory mites during the season, when compared to control plots, occurred in the Portal and Onager treatments.

Historic breeding efforts in corn (Zea mays L.) have resulted in uniform, single-stalked phenotypes with limited potential for environmental plasticity. Therefore, plant density is a critical yield component for corn, as corn is unable to successfully compensate for a deficit of plants. This is a summary of the variety testing for corn, sorghum, soybean, and sunflower. Nine corn varieties were tested in 2020, with an average yield of 107.6 bu/a. Twenty-four cultivars of soybeans from maturity groups (MG) 3-4 and twenty-seven cultivars from MG4-5 were tested in both full-season and double-cropped management. Full-season beans yielded an average of 54.5 bu/a for MG3-4 and 58.8 bu/a for MG4-5, which was greater than the average yields in the double-cropped beans at 32 bu/a for MG3-4 and 40.5 bu/a for MG4-5. In-season application of potassium (K) fertilizer may offer an alternative to remediate deficiencies developed during the growing season. The objective of this study was to determine corn response to topdress K application under deficient K soil conditions. Treatments included a control and 50 lb K2O/a in-season broadcasted at the V8 growth stage. The fertilizer source was potassium chloride (KCl). Measurements collected were plant biomass and tissue nutrient concentration at reproductive stage (R6), and grain yield. Potassium fertilization increased yield at the location evaluated in this study. The in-season fertilized treatment produced higher yield compared to the control (P < 0.09). The late K fertilization had higher K concentration and uptake in the plant at R6 (P < 0.06) with the same plant biomass as the control treatment. Also, broadcasting KCl at V8 resulted in a higher K/Mg ratio late in the season (R6). Preliminary results of this study suggest that in-season applications using dry K fertilizers could be used when pre-plant fertilization was not done. Nevertheless, for a dry growing season, corn response might be limited.

The objective of the study was to compare Outlook (dimethenamid) alone and in various tank mixtures for season-long weed control in corn. Kochia control with most herbicides was 95% or more late in the season. However, Russian thistle control did not exceed 83% with any herbicide tested. Palmer amaranth control at 59 days after the postemergence treatments was similar among all herbicides, while green foxtail control was 93% or more with each treatment. All herbicides increased grain yields relative to the untreated control, but corn treated with Outlook or Verdict alone yielded less grain than the best yielding plots.
