Neuromodulation By Endogenous Interlukin-1Β In Hippocampus Of The Murine Brain: Regulation Of Neuronal Excitation, Spandita Seouli Dutta Dec 2020

Neuromodulation By Endogenous Interlukin-1Β In Hippocampus Of The Murine Brain: Regulation Of Neuronal Excitation, Spandita Seouli Dutta

Dissertations - ALL

The pro-inflammatory cytokine, Interleukin-1β (IL-1β), is well known for its ability to initiate and propagate inflammatory responses at sites of infection and tissue injury. Paradoxically at odds with this classic view, it is now clear that IL-1β signaling modulates a number of physiological functions in the central nervous system. In this regard, IL-1β is involved in sleep and body fluid regulation in the basal forebrain and hypothalamus, respectively, and plasticity changes that underlie cognition in the hippocampus. Evidence from a previous study in my laboratory further suggests that IL-1β regulates the innate seizure threshold, which arguably is a reflection of …

Evolution Acceptance, Religiosity, And Nature Of Science In An Undergraduate Population, Ryan D.P. Dunk Aug 2020

Evolution Acceptance, Religiosity, And Nature Of Science In An Undergraduate Population, Ryan D.P. Dunk

Dissertations - ALL

Decades of research into the acceptance of evolutionary biology have revealed a number of factors that are related to an individual’s choice to accept or reject evolutionary biology. This work seeks to extend that work in the following key ways: (1) Use a longitudinal time frame, along with multifactorial linear modeling, to investigate the changes in evolution acceptance and its associated factors across a year of introductory biology education. (2) Expand the study population to a general undergraduate population, and study the change in acceptance of evolution in this general student population across the first semester of university education. (3) …

The Ecological Importance And Evolutionary Potential Of Phenotypic Plasticity In Novel Environments, Shengpei Wang Jun 2020

The Ecological Importance And Evolutionary Potential Of Phenotypic Plasticity In Novel Environments, Shengpei Wang

Dissertations - ALL

Phenotypic plasticity refers to a genotype’s ability to produce different phenotypes in response to different environments. How organisms respond to environments through phenotypic plasticity can impact the fitness of individuals and thus the demography and even evolution of a population. Having environmentally relevant phenotypic responses could be especially important when a population encounters novel environments, where extinction risks are high such as at the edge of geographic ranges or when there are sudden environmental shifts. Although plasticity has been shown to facilitate the production of novel phenotypes in novel environments, it is less clear whether this leads to increased population …

Undergraduate Research Experiences In Biology: Roles Of Mentors And Impacts Of Early Exposure And Types Of Engagement On Student Outcomes, Kelly Marie Schmid May 2020

Undergraduate Research Experiences In Biology: Roles Of Mentors And Impacts Of Early Exposure And Types Of Engagement On Student Outcomes, Kelly Marie Schmid

Dissertations - ALL

Within the sciences, it is important to provide all students access to undergraduate research experiences and mentoring relationships that are beneficial to their learning and success. As such, this research investigates the following aims: (1) Develop a seminar-style course for 1st and 2nd year biology undergraduate students that involves reading and discussion of primary scientific literature, writing about science, and engaging with researchers within the department. (2) Assess how an introduction to biological research course, that does not include explicit nature of science (NOS) instruction, affects students’ nature of science understanding. (3) Assess how faculty lab-based research experiences (FLRE), course-based …

The Role Of Cell Division During Tissue Morphogenesis, Lindsay Rathbun May 2020

The Role Of Cell Division During Tissue Morphogenesis, Lindsay Rathbun

Dissertations - ALL

During embryonic tissue morphogenesis, cell division increases both the number of cells and cellular diversity. This is often regulated by the positioning of daughter cells post-mitosis. The goal of this dissertation research is to determine the mechanisms that place daughter cells, and how this contributes to tissue development. First, the zebrafish left-right organizer, Kupffer’s vesicle (KV) is used as a model to investigate the role of cytokinesis and abscission during de novo lumen formation. The cytokinetic bridge places at the center of the developing KV rosette, where it acts as a landmark for Rab11-mediated vesicle trafficking to bring polarity components …
