The Public Oyster Grounds Of The Rappahannock River, Jay D. Andrews, Dexter S. Haven Jan 1952

The Public Oyster Grounds Of The Rappahannock River, Jay D. Andrews, Dexter S. Haven

Reports

The Rappahannock River includes some of tho best oyster grounds in the state. The public grounds comprise a poorly used natural resource of great potential value to the state. At present oystermen gather the "wild" crop which, unf'ortunately, represents only a small portion of the oysters which could be raised by intensive management.

In a single phrase, the Rappahannock can be described as a river where oysters "grow fast but set poorly". The chief factor limiting production is the lack of adequate set of young oysters each year. It is not likely that biologists will learn in the near future …

Seasonal Patterns Of Oyster Setting In The James River And Chesapeake Bay, Jay D. Andrews Oct 1951

Seasonal Patterns Of Oyster Setting In The James River And Chesapeake Bay, Jay D. Andrews

VIMS Articles

The James River seedbeds are one of the few oyster-growing areas of the world still operated successfully as a free fishery on natural oyster grounds. It is characteristic of free fisheries that much is taken out and little is put back. For some 50 years, the James River seedbeds have continuously furnished most of the seed- oysters (young oysters) for the planters of Vir- ginia. That they are still productive is strong testimony to the natural fitness of the area for oyster culture. Yet, their survival as seed grounds must be attributed in no small measure to the laws prohibiting …

Range And Habitat Of The Clam Polymesoda-Caroliniana (Bosc) In Virginia (Family Cycladidae), Jay D. Andrews, Catherine Cook

VIMS Articles

The clam Polymesoda caroliniana (Bosc), which ranges north and eastward in brackish waters from Lavaca Bay, Texas,2 has not pre- viously been reported north of the Neuse River, N. C. (Van der Schalie 1933). On 7 April 1947, Richard Hoffman found several shells on the beach above Swann Point on the James River, a tributary of Chesapeake Bay (Fig. 1). On 20 April 1947, J. P. E. Morrison (personal communication) and Hoffman found living specimens in the mud and detritus around the knees of cypress trees one-half mile above Swann Point. These records are included in this paper through the …

The Freshwater Medusa, Craspedacusta Sowerbii, In Matoaka Lake, Williamsburg, Virginia, Ernest F. Tresselt

VIMS Articles

The freshwater jellyfish, Craspedacusta sowerbii Lankester, has been described from at least 19 of the 48 states (Schmitt, '39). In spite of an apparently widespread distribution it is sufficiently rare that records of its occurrence are noteworthy. Approximately 200 medusae of this species were seen in Matoaka Lake, Williamsburg, Va., on July 18, 1949.

The Importance Of Catch Records In The Management Of The Fisheries Of Virginia With Recommendations For The Establishment Of A Fishery Statistical Laboratory, Ralph C. Hammer, Willard Van Engel, Clinton E. Atkinson

Reports

(...) We, as a special committee, were instructed to consider the need of a statistical system that would :provide for a detailed record of fish and shellfish taken from the waters of Virginia.· We have reviewed the development of catch records now obtained by state and federal agencies; their original :purpose and use; and their inadequacies and limitations. We have studied the application of catch statistics to practical management problems; their relation to the economic security of the fishing industry'; and their value to law-makers in formulating wise and adequate legislation. We have compared the statistical systems successfully in operation …

The Fungus Lagenidium Callinectes Couch (1942) On Eggs Of The Blue Crab In Chesapeake Bay., Rosalie Rogers-Talbert Oct 1948

The Fungus Lagenidium Callinectes Couch (1942) On Eggs Of The Blue Crab In Chesapeake Bay., Rosalie Rogers-Talbert

VIMS Articles

In 1941 a parasitic fungus was first observed on the eggs of many obtained from natural spawning areas in Chesapeake Bay (Sandoz, Rogers, Newcombe, 1944). Dr. John N. Couch of the University of North Carolina examined infected samples and recognized the parasite to be a new species, he named Lagenidiiin callinectes Couch (1942).

Marked annual fluctuations in the commercial catches of the blue crab Callinectes sapidus Rathbun (1895) have taken place. The discovery of the egg raised the questions of how it affects the development of the crab embryo, percentage of the eggs of a crab may be infected, and …

Oyster Setting Records For Rappahannock River, Jay D. Andrews

Reports

1. The Rappahannook River probably never did get a consistent set of oyster spat.

2. In the year 1941 occurred the best set in recent years. No quantitative data.

3.The set for 1942 was practically nil.

4. The set for 1945 was very small or none.

5. The 1944 set was probably the second best in recent years with an average of 176 spat per bushel for the whole river.

6. No set of consequence occurred above Towles Point· in 1945, and a very light set occurred below this point.

7. Limited records indicate a year similar to 1945 for …

Report On Chemical Control Of Oyster Drills, 1948 : Summary Of Experiments, Richard L. Hoffman

Reports

During the summer of 1948 the writer was employed at the Virginia Fisheries Laboratory: for the purpose of assisting with routine work in connection with the oyster population studies as well as to devote some time to investigation of the practicability of utilizing chemical repellents in control of the oyster drills (Urosalpinx and Eupleura) . Initial work was carried on to determine tolerance of the young oyster spat to various chemicals, and usually the optimum conditions were determined before introduction of drills.

Early Life History Of The Oyster Crab, Pinnotheres Ostreum (Say), Mildred Sandoz, Sewell H. Hopkins

VIMS Articles

The first and second zoeae of Pinnotheres ostreum have been described Hyman (1924). The five crab stages parasitic in the oyster (Ostrea virginica) have been described by Stauber (1945). The present paper is an attempt to plete the knowledge of the development of the oyster crab from the egg to the first crab instar. This work was done at the Virginia Fisheries Laboratory in summer of 1944, under the direction of Dr. Curtis L. Newcombe.

The first Pinnotherid larva to be described was the zoea of Pinnotheres pisum Leach, the British pea crab. This species has three or more zoeae. …
