The Utah Natural Heritage Program (UNHP) assimilates and synthesizes information concerning rare species for use in land management and species conservation applications. This information is maintained in the UNHP database and includes both species-level information—e.g., assessments of species conservation status from a statewide perspective—and population-level information, which includes GIS coverages for species of high conservational interest. Beginning in 1996 an effort to develop information in the UNHP database for animal species was funded by the Utah Reclamation, Mitigation, and Conservation Commission under authority of the Central Utah Project Completion Act. Initial efforts focused on assigning conservation priority ranks. Several factors—comprising …

The effect of addition of CaCl2 2H2O and MgCl2 6H2O on crystallization kinetics and the rheological behavior of a 70% trehalose solution was studied by polarized light microscopy and dynamic oscillatory rheometry. Salts caused a delay on nucleation with induction times for crystallization longer for Mg2+ than for Ca2+. Divalent cations were incorporated into crystals, changing the growth of certain faces preferentially, which resulted in changes in morphology. Addition of CaCl2 2H2O in a high salt/trehalose molar ratio dramatically increased complex modulus (G*), indicating a stronger viscoelastic behavior. A gel-like structure was formed when Ca2+ was added to trehalose solution. …

There is an old adage of “work smarter, not harder.” An e ective leader/manager has to be able to motivate others to be involved. All too often, we attempt to do it all ourselves, thinking we can do it more quickly than taking time to explain to another person.

This is the final Report from Phase I of the 2003 Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) Benchmark Study. The study involved two phases and the USU research team produced two final reports, one for each phase of the research project, and an overarching Executive Summary. The purposes of the 2003 UDOT Benchmark Study conducted by Utah State University (USU) were to provide the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) with information for use in its statewide, long-range transportation plan and to provide benchmark data for tracking trends over time. The study was conducted jointly by the Institute for Outdoor Recreation and …

Effect Of Sucrose Ester Addition On Nucleation And Growth Behavior Of Milk Fat-Sunflower Oil Blends, Marina Cerdeira, Silvana Martini, Richard W. Hartel, Maria Lidia Herrera
Nutrition, Dietetics, and Food Sciences Faculty Publications
The effects of addition of the sucrose esters (SE) P-1670, P-170, and S-170 to a high-melting fraction of milk fat (HMF) and its blends with sunflower oil (SFO) on nucleation and growth were studied by laser polarized light turbidimetry and polarized light microscopy (PLM). The three SE delayed nucleation of HMF at the temperatures selected. P-1670 did not modify average crystal size after 3 h at crystallization temperature (Tc) or crystal size distribution and modified crystallization kinetics only slightly. P-170 and S-170, however, markedly diminished crystal size and narrowed crystal size distribution. Activation free energies of nucleation at equivalent supercooling, …

Winter feeding costs have often been cited as one of the most expensive aspects of beef cattle production in the Intermountain West. Research and rancher experience suggests that using forage kochia for fall/winter grazing may help reduce these costs.

Fall Calving In The Intermountain West, Dale R. Zobell, Craig Burrell, Darrell Rothlisberger, Eleanor Jenson
All Current Publications
Fall calving has been practiced by beef producers for many years, although in small numbers relative to spring calving. The spring calf crop has been a traditional event for most beef producers and probably will continue to be. There are distinct advantages, however, to fall calving which producers could take advantage of. The potential for higher conception and weaning rates, price premiums and the elimination of calf scours are among the reasons some beef producers have switched from spring calving their herd to fall calving.

In Utah, nearly two-thirds of the water consumed by residential homeowners is used to maintain landscapes. Recent water checks conducted by Utah State University Extension found that a typical homeowner applies 80 inches of water each growing season. This is twice as much as is needed.
