Projected Production Costs For Eastern South Dakota Crops: 1980-1990, Richard C. Shane Mar 1991

Projected Production Costs For Eastern South Dakota Crops: 1980-1990, Richard C. Shane

Agricultural Experiment Station Agricultural Economics Pamphlets (1941-1991)

The crop producer in South Dakota faces risk and uncertainty from many directions. Commodity prices and input costs are volatile, weather conditions change continuously and macroeconomic forces acting on inflation and interest rates leave the farmer "not knowing which way to turn." This high risk is accentuated by high investment requirements for land and machinery and high cash flow obligations. Annual or short-run decisions of what crop(s) and how much of each crop to plant are imperfect because of risk factors. Long-run decisions concerning equipment investment and land expansion are even more risky because of the longer planning horizon of …

Costs Per Hour And Per Acre For Machine Operations, Herbert R. Allen

Agricultural Experiment Station Agricultural Economics Pamphlets (1941-1991)

Machine costs are affected by many variables. Size, age, purchase price, maintenance, fuel type, and hours of use each year are just a few of the many factors involved. They may be different in each individual farm situation. List prices employed in arriving at costs are based upon 1979 price levels. These prices may vary because of geographic location as well as special options available on most machines. However, prices used in this publication are believed by the author to be representative of investment requirements for the machines that are listed.

Labor Requirements In Beef Cow Herds, Herbert R. Allen, David Jibben

Agricultural Experiment Station Agricultural Economics Pamphlets (1941-1991)

The cattle producer attempts to allocate and use scarce resources so as to maximize profits. Efficient use of labor is an important factor of production. It normally serves to lower production costs which frequently results in greater profits. The following report attempts to quantify the number of annual man hours necessary for different levels of efficiency in labor use with beef cow herds. Furthermore, this report figures the monthly percentages of total annual labor required at average efficiency for five different sizes of beef cow herds. Data for this report have been obtained from a survey of 160 farmers and …

Analysis Of The Republic Of Korea Food Grain Situation, William F. Payne, Kyo Ii Jo Jul 1973

Analysis Of The Republic Of Korea Food Grain Situation, William F. Payne, Kyo Ii Jo

Agricultural Experiment Station Agricultural Economics Pamphlets (1941-1991)

Two problems for developing economies confronted with food shortages are (1) how to acquire sufficient food and still stabilize food prices in the short-run and (2) how to increase food production and realize food self-sufficiency in the long-run. Solving these two problems is often considered a precondition to achieving steady economic growth and industrialization. This study was concerned with the Republic of Korea, where economic development plans have been initiated during the last two decades under the condition of annual food grain shortages. Efforts to overcome these shortages have resulted in South Korea becoming the fastest growing major market for …

An Economic Profile Of Farms And Ranches In South Dakota, Herbert R. Allen Jun 1973

An Economic Profile Of Farms And Ranches In South Dakota, Herbert R. Allen

Agricultural Experiment Station Agricultural Economics Pamphlets (1941-1991)

This publication is in response to numerous" questions regarding the number of farms in different size groups within the State of South Dakota. Particular emphasis is placed upon identification of farms under economic size classifications. Data are presented by areas of the state and by counties. Data has been obtained from the 1949, 1959 and 1969 Census of Agriculture. Data on the economic characteristics of farm families is not readily available and it was therefore determined that census data on farms (as distinguished from farm families) was the most useful kind of data for identification of any economic profile.

An Investigation Into Possible Problems Arising From Repeal Of The Personal Property Tax In South Dakota, Ardelle Lundeen, Allyn O. Lockner Oct 1971

An Investigation Into Possible Problems Arising From Repeal Of The Personal Property Tax In South Dakota, Ardelle Lundeen, Allyn O. Lockner

Agricultural Experiment Station Agricultural Economics Pamphlets (1941-1991)

There is considerable pressure in South Dakota, as in many states at the present time, for tax relief or tax reform. Much of this concern is directed toward the type of taxes that most local governments and school districts rely on for the major portion of their operating funds. In South Dakota property taxes account for about 69 percent of local government revenue compared to a national average of 45 percent(1). As costs of government continue to rise, the burden on property owners becomes more onerous. The search for means of relief for the property owner continues. One method that …

Manual Of Operating Procedures For A Computerized Farm Financial Information System, Herbert R. Allen, Kent Scofield Jan 1971

Manual Of Operating Procedures For A Computerized Farm Financial Information System, Herbert R. Allen, Kent Scofield

Agricultural Experiment Station Agricultural Economics Pamphlets (1941-1991)

The computerized farm information system described in this publication was developed by South Dakota State University Farm Management research workers. The system is designed to provide detailed data on cash flow patterns, enterprise costs, net worth, net income, family living, depreciation schedules and business operating ratios. The program is written in FORTRAN and is operational on the IBM System/360-Model 30 with 64K storage capacity. Large capital investments and greater dependence upon borrowed capital to finance highly technical farming operations requires farm operators to have sharper analytical tools than ever before. Modern computers are helping to provide these tools. However, efficient …

Economic Opportunities For South Dakota During The 1970'S : Highlights Of Papers Presented : Eighth Agri-Business Day, South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station, Department Of Economics, South Dakota State University

Agricultural Experiment Station Agricultural Economics Pamphlets (1941-1991)

The economic wellbeing of the people of South Dakota in the 1970’s and beyond will depend on many conditions, but paramount among these will be their abilities to understand and analyze the changing nature of our economy, their wisdom in planning for a better future, and their courage and willingness to take the actions necessary to create the kind of communities they desire. One very important factor determining the economic position of those remaining in the state will be the extent to which they can cause more income to flow into South Dakota from the outside. The people of a …

Some Factors Affecting The Growth Of Grain Elevators In South Dakota, Albert E. Raeder Jan 1970

Some Factors Affecting The Growth Of Grain Elevators In South Dakota, Albert E. Raeder

Agricultural Experiment Station Agricultural Economics Pamphlets (1941-1991)

The grain elevator industry in South Dakota is currently undergoing considerable change. Small, inefficient elevators are being replaced with larger, more mechanized units. In South Dakota in 1960, there were 533 elevator companies in 368 towns but by 1968 only 450 elevator companies survived in 345 towns. An elevator company includes all the facilities and businesses that are under one management. Throughout this study elevator companies will be referred to as elevators. All of this points out that the industry is dynamic and changing. Some elevators keep up with these changes, while others fail to adopt new ideas. What are …

An Economic Analysis Of Some Aspects Of Medical Service Availability In Northwest South Dakota, Leland G. Bierman Aug 1969

An Economic Analysis Of Some Aspects Of Medical Service Availability In Northwest South Dakota, Leland G. Bierman

Agricultural Experiment Station Agricultural Economics Pamphlets (1941-1991)

A community which has its own hospital and doctor is benefited in many ways. First, the people in the community are near medical care in times of emergency. Second, hospital patients from the community are near family and friends when receiving care. Third, a community may be benefited economically by the presence of a hospital facility because additional jobs are provided, and people from the surrounding area are given increased incentive to come to the town in purchasing other goods. Also, adequate medical services are of importance in attracting new industry into a town. The trend today, however, is away …

Business Development In Rural Communities : Highlights Of Papers Presented : Seventh Agri-Business Day, South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station, Department Of Economics, South Dakota State University

Agricultural Experiment Station Agricultural Economics Pamphlets (1941-1991)

Agri-Business Day Programs in the past have been devoted to such objectives as explaining characteristics of our rural economy, managing change in the livestock industry and emphasizing the need for economic development. Our primary interest was and continued to be directed toward ways that the economic wellbeing of those living in our rural economy might be improved. We recognize, however, that the welfare of rural families does not depend entirely on their ability to produce and market products grown on the land. It is also tied to the strength of the total economy. The strength of the total economy in …

Some Corporations That Own Farm And Ranch Land In South Dakota, Russell L. Berry Jan 1969

Some Corporations That Own Farm And Ranch Land In South Dakota, Russell L. Berry

Agricultural Experiment Station Agricultural Economics Pamphlets (1941-1991)

Concern has developed about large out-of-state corporations that own agricultural land in South Dakota. Fears that such corporations may destroy family farms are often expressed. As a result legislation has been proposed which would prohibit such corporations from farming unless 51 percent of stock is owned by South Dakotans. Do present out-of-state corporations justify such fears? A survey recently made indicates that most out-of-state corporations lease their land to independent farmers. Those few that directly manage their land are not much if any different from the home-grown kind. Most appear to be held and operated by families. The survey was …

Planning The Communities In Which We'll Want To Live: Papers Presented At The Fifth Annual Agri-Business Day March 31, 1966, South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station, Department Of Economics, South Dakota State University

Agricultural Experiment Station Agricultural Economics Pamphlets (1941-1991)

The story of man's search for the necessities and comforts of life is the story of man's relationship to the land and other resources at his disposal and the combining and shaping of these resources to meet his wants and needs. Until modem times this process was largely one of trial and error. In man's quest for a better life he learned that the individual, working alone, could not fulfill many of his needs, but by joining with his neighbors they could provide services of mutual benefit. He also learned that some services are best provided by government and supported …
