Genetic Transformation Of Bael (Aegle Marmelos Corr.), Rajesh Pati Oct 2013

Genetic Transformation Of Bael (Aegle Marmelos Corr.), Rajesh Pati

Rajesh Pati

Aegle marmelos Corr. is better known for its medicinal values rather than its edible quality. Every part of the plant viz. leaves, fruits, roots, and the bark are used for treating various diseases related to heart, stomach, bacterial, fungal, viral, worms, fertility, fever and cosmetics. Marmelosin is one of the major compounds (coumarin), used to treat various diseases. Till date, there are no varieties developed for commercial orchards of Bael and hence, regarded as one among the underutilized fruits of India. Therefore, there is an urgent need for breeding new and cultivable varieties in Aegle marmelos. But the problem for …

Micropropagation In Fruit Crops, Rajesh Pati

Micropropagation is a proven means of producing millions of identical plants under a controlled and aseptic condition, independent of seasonal constraints. It not only provides economy of time and space but also gives greater output and allows further augmentation of elite disease free propagules. India is homeland of many important fruit crops such as Indian gooseberry (Emblica officinalis Gaertn), bael (Aegle marmelos Corr.), Guava (, Psidium guajava), jamun or black plum (Syzygium cuminii L. Skeels.), Mango (Mangifera indica) and Papaya (Carica papaya).

Bael (Aegle marmelos Corr.) is an important medicinal fruit tree. The fruit pulp contains marmelosin, which is a laxative, diuretic, is being used in many patented drugs in India. Micropropagation technology can be gainfully employed in mass multiplication of improved bael varieties. We have developed micropropagation protocol of bael through shoot bud culture. It was imperative to test genetic fidelity of micropropagated plants using molecular markers (RAPD, DAMD and ISSR).

Histological And Biochemical Changes In Aegle Marmelos Corr. Before And After Acclimatization, Rajesh Pati Apr 2013

Histological And Biochemical Changes In Aegle Marmelos Corr. Before And After Acclimatization, Rajesh Pati

Rajesh Pati

Maximum mortality of micropropagated plants occur during acclimatization phase because plantlets undergo rapid and extreme changes in physiological functioning, histological and biochemical changes. In order to investigate the actual reason of this limitation, test samples were collected at different stages of micropropagation of Aegle marmelos Corr. (In vitro stage, acclimation stage). The biochemical result showed that micropropagated plantlets produced significantly low total chlorophyll (0.042 mg/g fresh weight), reducing sugar (3.227%), NR activity (1.353 NO2/h/g fresh weight) and but higher protein (0.048 μg/g) during in vitro phase. The in vitro raised plants showed abnormal histological features like altered leaf mesophyll, absence …

Isolation And Partial Characterization Of A Novel Lectin From Aegle Marmelos Fruit And Its Effect On Adherence And Invasion Of Shigella To Ht29 Cells, Raja Sb, Murali Mr, Kumar Nk, Devaraj Sn Jan 2011

Isolation And Partial Characterization Of A Novel Lectin From Aegle Marmelos Fruit And Its Effect On Adherence And Invasion Of Shigella To Ht29 Cells, Raja Sb, Murali Mr, Kumar Nk, Devaraj Sn

Lectins are a class of ubiquitous proteins/glycoproteins that are abundantly found in nature. Lectins have unique carbohydrate binding property and hence have been exploited as drugs against various infectious diseases. We have isolated one such novel lectin from the fruit pulp of Aegle marmelos. The isolated lectin was partially characterised and its effect against Shigella dysenteriae infection was evaluated. The isolated lectin was found to be a dimeric protein with N-acetylgalactosamine, mannose and sialic acid binding specificity. The effect of Aegle marmelos fruit lectin on the adherence of Shigella dysenteriae to human colonic epithelial cells (HT29 cells) was evaluated by …

Imperatorin A Furocoumarin Inhibits Periplasmic Cu-Zn Sod Of Shigella Dysenteriae Their By Modulates Its Resistance Towards Phagocytosis During Host Pathogen Interaction, Raja Sb, Murali Mr, Roopa K, Devaraj Sn Jan 2011

Imperatorin A Furocoumarin Inhibits Periplasmic Cu-Zn Sod Of Shigella Dysenteriae Their By Modulates Its Resistance Towards Phagocytosis During Host Pathogen Interaction, Raja Sb, Murali Mr, Roopa K, Devaraj Sn

Shigella dysenteriae continues to be a major health problem, which leads to death, due to diarrhoea and dysentery, predominantly in children below the age of 5. Bacterial invasion of the colonic epithelium leads to severe inflammation together with bacterial dissemination generates abscesses and ulcerations. Periplasmic copper, zinc super oxide dismutase of Shigella protects it from exogenous superoxide produced by host, during its invasion. Hence, in present study an attempt was made to study the effect of aqueous extract of Aegle marmelos on host and pathogen defence. Histology analysis of rat ileal loop showed the loss of virulence in aqueous extract …

Effect Of Aqueous Extract Of Aegle Marmelos Fruit On Adherence And Β-Lactam Resistance Of Enteropathogenic Escherichia Coli By Down Regulating Outer Membrane Protein C, Murali Malliga Raman Jan 2009

Effect Of Aqueous Extract Of Aegle Marmelos Fruit On Adherence And Β-Lactam Resistance Of Enteropathogenic Escherichia Coli By Down Regulating Outer Membrane Protein C, Murali Malliga Raman

Murali Malliga Raman

Problem statement: Enteropathogenic Escherichia Coli (EPEC) continue to be a major health problem, leading to death due to diarrhea, predominantly in children below the age of five. Due to evolution of multi drug resistance in EPEC and side effects caused to host by antibiotics necessitated a search for alternative medicines from medicinal plants. One such medicinal plant used since ancient times to cure diarrhea is Aegle marmelos. This study was done to investigate the effect of aqueous extract of Aegle marmelos fruit (AEAM) on outer membrane protein C (OmpC) of EPEC, which plays a key role in adherence and antibiotic …

Differential Expression Of Ompc And Ompf In Multidrug-Resistant Shigella Dysenteriae And Shigella Flexneri By Aqueous Extract Of Aegle Marmelos, Altering Its Susceptibility Toward Beta-Lactam Antibiotics, Raja Sb, Murali Mr, Devaraj Sn Jan 2008

Differential Expression Of Ompc And Ompf In Multidrug-Resistant Shigella Dysenteriae And Shigella Flexneri By Aqueous Extract Of Aegle Marmelos, Altering Its Susceptibility Toward Beta-Lactam Antibiotics, Raja Sb, Murali Mr, Devaraj Sn

Murali Malliga Raman

Steadily increasing resistance among Shigella to beta-lactams, aminoglycosides, and tetracycline has compromised the utility of these commonly used antimicrobial agents. Also, undesirable side effects of certain antibiotics have triggered immense interest in search of alternative therapies using medicinal plants. One such medicinal plant used since ancient times to cure diarrhea is Aegle marmelos. The present study exemplifies the susceptibility of beta-lactam-resistant Shigella dysenteriae and Shigella flexneri toward beta-lactam antibiotics, when grown in the presence of aqueous extract of A. marmelos (AEAM), by altering porin channels. This was demonstrated by antibiotic sensitivity test using disc diffusion method and MIC test. Susceptibility …
