Assam is endowed with copious aquatic wealth in the form of beels, swamps, ponds and rivers. The floodplain wetlands (beels) extending over one lakh hectare, constitute the most important fishery resource of the state. The study was carried out in 21 districts of Assam. Two categories of respondents, namely fishers (106 nos) of floodplain wetlands and lower level field extension functionaries (30 officials) constituted the sample for the study. The study revealed that the interpersonal communication sources like consultation with Fisheries Extention Officer Beel manager and scientists were the most important sources for obtaining information on new, improved practices. Demonstration and consultation with progressive farmers were assigned second and third rank. A study was carried out in 106 floodplain wetlands of Assam with the objective of ascertaining the preference of communication media use by the fishers of floodplain wetlands and extent of their use by field extension functionaries. Two categories of respondents namely 106 lessee fishermen and 30 officials lower level field extension functionaries constituted the sample of the study. The findings revealed that the interpersonal communication sources like consultation with FEO/ Beel manager was the most important sources for obtaining information by fishers. The floodplain wetlands (beels), extending over one lakh hectare, constitute the most important fishery resource of the Assam. The average productivity of Assam beels is 150-200 kg./ha/year. Many factors can be attributed for this situation, but inadequate auto stocking might be one of the basic reasons. To tide over this situation, rearing of seed in pens could be a viable alternative. Stock enhancement through pen culture was demonstrated by CIFRI at Haribhanga beel with three IMC. The fisher has adopted with modification using three Indian major carp and three exotic carp. One of the major constraints of traditional Sesame farming is low productivity of local varieties. To replace this anomaly, Krishi Vigyan Kendra of CIFRI has conducted frontline demonstration at adopted farmers’ field in four development blocks viz. Impact study on introduction of Moong (Vigna radiata) cultivation in rice fallow cropping system of Sundarbans has been done to know the socio -economic impact of Summer Moong cultivation over the populace of Sundarbans after 10 years of start of FLD on Moong in this area. The study covered randomly selected 60 farmer beneficiaries under FLD of three blocks using Before-After analysis through PRA, formal household survey and focused group discussion.
