Reducing Food Scarcity: The Benefits Of Urban Farming, S.A. Claudell, Emilio Mejia

Journal of Nonprofit Innovation

Urban farming can enhance the lives of communities and help reduce food scarcity. This paper presents a conceptual prototype of an efficient urban farming community that can be scaled for a single apartment building or an entire community across all global geoeconomics regions, including densely populated cities and rural, developing towns and communities. When deployed in coordination with smart crop choices, local farm support, and efficient transportation then the result isn’t just sustainability, but also increasing fresh produce accessibility, optimizing nutritional value, eliminating the use of ‘forever chemicals’, reducing transportation costs, and fostering global environmental benefits.

Dyadic Coping In The Transition To Parenthood, Sierra Gray Nov 2023

Dyadic Coping In The Transition To Parenthood, Sierra Gray

Family Perspectives

The Transition to Parenthood (TTP) is a common transition point for couples that is often associated with declines in relationship satisfaction. There are many changes that take place during this transition that can lead to a variety of stresses such as psychological distress, sexual distress, as well as increases in conflict. Parents likely experience these stressors together, and therefore should implement dyadic coping processes. With partner support and responsiveness, parents can counter damaging psychological outcomes. As partners incorporate empathy and communicate effectively throughout the TTP, they can prevent and improve sexual outcomes. Since partner conflict is very common during this …

Adhd In Women: Psychological, Academic, And Social Effects, Sienna Kelson Sep 2023

Adhd In Women: Psychological, Academic, And Social Effects, Sienna Kelson

Family Perspectives

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurological disorder that involves a persistent pattern of inattention and/or hyperactivity-impulsivity which interferes with functioning or development. ADHD is commonly diagnosed in childhood and can persist into adulthood (Kok et al., 2020; Fraticelli et al., 2022). It is estimated that ADHD affects 5-7% of school-age children with a male-to-female ratio of approximately 3:1 (Kok et al., 2016). For a long time, ADHD was assumed to be primarily a male disorder, but researchers are increasingly finding that the number of males and females with ADHD is likely close to equal (Nussbaum, 2012). There is increasing evidence …

Mindfulness In University Students: A Tool For Managing Stress, Lyndsey Kunzler Oct 2022

Mindfulness In University Students: A Tool For Managing Stress, Lyndsey Kunzler

Family Perspectives

Mindfulness can be a meaningful practice across different stages of life: it can help improve well-being for young children (Becker & Whitaker, 2018; Esmaeilian et al., 2018; Li et al., 2019), adolescents (Leavitt et al., 2020; Oppo et al., 2019), and adults (Berk et al., 2018; Pierson et al., 2019). Mindfulness is the act of clearing the mind, being present, and paying attention with the intent to improve well-being (Greeson et al., 2014). Mindfulness began as a common Buddhist practice, but in the 1970s Jon Kabat-Zinn created mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) in an attempt to aid mental health issues (Greeson …

Effects Of Parents’ Avoidant And Anxious Attachment On Children, Nicole Busacker Oct 2022

Effects Of Parents’ Avoidant And Anxious Attachment On Children, Nicole Busacker

Family Perspectives

Avoidant and anxious attachment styles are both negative ways of dealing with the need for connection or bonding. One reason these attachment styles develop is in “the absence of a secure bond with an available and responsive ‘other,’ rigid, repetitive internal and interpersonal coping patterns or attachment strategies develop” (Brubacher, 2017, p. 52–53). These coping patterns are made manifest in either avoidant or anxious attachment behaviors and are mainly expressed in relation to spouses and children.

Empathy And Fairness In Nonhuman Primates: Evolutionary Bases Of Human Morality, Colt Halter May 2021

Empathy And Fairness In Nonhuman Primates: Evolutionary Bases Of Human Morality, Colt Halter

Intuition: The BYU Undergraduate Journal of Psychology

Darwin offered an evolutionary perspective on the origins of human morality, suggesting that humans share a biological foundation with nonhuman primates. This paper reviews the current literature on moral and prosocial behaviors of nonhuman primates, specifically examining whether nonhuman primates exhibit behaviors that are typical of empathy and fairness. The literature documents that nonhuman primates exhibit empathetic behaviors regarding emotional contagion and sympathetic concern. There is also evidence that nonhuman primates have a sense of fairness, seen in their reciprocal behaviors and aversion to inequity. Taken together, this suggests that there are evolutionary roots of morality, lending empirical support to …
