The Development And Structure Of The Vegetative And Reproductive Organs Of Kudzu, Pueraria Thunbergiana (Sieb And Zucc) Benth , Harry Josef Romm

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The present study of the development and structure of the vegetative and reproductive organs of kudzu was undertaken to furnish a basis for studies in the breeding, cultivation and utilisation of the plant;Kudzu is a coarse, hairy, stoloniferous vine with alternate, trifoliate compound leaves and racemose, papilionaceous flowers. Twenty to thirty days are required for the completion of anthesis in one raceme; The order of initiation of floral organs is sepals, petals, stamens, and carpel; The haploid number of chromosomes is eleven. The ovules arise as dome-shaped primordia along the inner margins of the ventral suture. The nine to ...

Physiological Studies Of Weed Seed Germination , Robert Owen Bibbey

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Environmental influences on the after-ripening and dormancy of seeds of a number of species were studied in the field and laboratory;Environmental dormancy is defined as the type of dormancy affecting a readily germinable seed when it was prevented from germinating by absence of some essential environmental factor or by the presence of some inhibitor, and seed dormancy, embracing both primary and secondary types, as the dormancy existing in a seed which fails to germinate under apparently satisfactory germinating conditions; The after-ripening of seeds of Thlaspi arvense, Brassica arvensis and Avena fatua was studied (1) in fine sandy loam, (2 ...

Controlling The Ph Of Cultures Of Penicillium Notatum Through Its Carbon And Nitrogen Nutrition, Albert E. Dimond, George L. Peltier

Papers in Plant Pathology

A survey of published material reveals relatively little information concerning the nutritional physiology of Penicillium notatum Westl. on synthetic media. Metabolism studies of P. notatum on various media have appeared to be incidental to the more pressing problem of producing penicillin quickly and in quantity. Fleming (1929) originally used a nutrient broth non-synthetic in nature. The Oxford group (Abraham et al., 1941) then adopted a modification of the so-called Czapek-Dox synthetic medium which supplies nitrogen as sodium nitrate and glucose as carbohydrate. Hobby, Meyer, and Chaffee (1942) suggested that brown sugar be substituted for glucose in this nutrient, with resultant ...

A Study Of The Phosphorylase Of Waxy Maize , Laura Bliss Jan 1943

A Study Of The Phosphorylase Of Waxy Maize , Laura Bliss

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

A method of phosphorus determination adaptable to the phosphorylase enzyme system of waxy maize was developed after a critical study of the methods reported in the literature. This problem involved the construction of a photo-electric colorimeter, the selection of a suitable filter combination, the calibration of the instrument, and the standardization of the method of phosphorus determination;Preliminary studies were made to obtain an estimate of the role of phosphorylase in the development of the waxy maize, to show the trend of the equilibrium reaction of starch + inorganic-P &rlhar2; glucose-1-phosphate in the presence of phosphorylase, and to form a basis for ...

Effects Of Carbon Dioxide And Oxygen On Absorption By Roots , Hsien Tsiu Chang Jan 1943

Effects Of Carbon Dioxide And Oxygen On Absorption By Roots , Hsien Tsiu Chang

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The effect of carbon dioxide on the absorption activities of roots of wheat, maize and rice plants was studied. The following results were obtained: (1) Bubbling carbon dioxide through the solutions reduced significantly the absorption of water, and of all nutrient elements tested, by all three experimental plants. (2) Bubbling air through the solution, in general, increased the absorption of water and nutrient elements over the control plants, but the increment was much less prominent and consistent than the reduction moused by the carbon dioxide. (3) In a single experiment bubbling commercial nitrogen gas through the solutions did not affect ...

Preparation And Properties Of Lactic Acid Lignin , Elton Fisher

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

When lignin is extracted from cornstalks by a large excess of lactic acid two major changes occur, namely a rapid initial process and a slow time-determining first order reaction. The temperature coefficient of the slow part of the reaction is negligible;A hydrolytic effect appears to play an important role in the extraction of lignin from plant tissue by both alcohols and organic acids;Evidence indicating that aqueous solutions of formic acid containing hydrochloric acid may cause lignin in plant tissue to undergo condensation-polymerization reactions is presented;Fractionation takes place when lignin is extracted from plant tissue by organic acids ...

The Genetics Congress, R. A. Emerson

Agronomy & Horticulture -- Faculty Publications

Mice and men reported from

Edinburgh after the Congress

(JOURNAL OF HEREDITY for

September 1939) but since then there

has been silence, as far as getting into the

record any details of the Congress. On

account of the disruption to trans-Atlantic

travel caused by the declaration of

war between England and Germany,

September 3, the American delegation to

the Congress was considerably delayed

in getting back. Only two failed ultimately

to return, Dr. and Mrs. F. W.

Tinney of the Division of Farm Crops

of the University of Wisconsin. They

were among about a dozen members of

the Congress who ...

Agronomy & Horticulture -- Faculty Publications

A Bolivian maize

maize with mosaic red pericarp and cob, here designated by the symbol M-M, crossed with a local inbred strain of maize having white pericarp and cob, W-W, produced in F1 21 M-M and 28

W-W plants, not far from the I : I relation expected on the assumption that

the M-M parent was heterozygous for pericarp and cob color, M-M/W-W.

In F2 and segregating F3 cultures, however, there were 130 M-M and 64

W-W plants obviously a 2 : I instead of the 3 : I relation expected. Later cultures

increased these records to 747 M-M ...

Regeneration In Various Types Of Apple Wood , Vernon Theodore Stoutemyer Jan 1937

Regeneration In Various Types Of Apple Wood , Vernon Theodore Stoutemyer

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Two distinct growth phases were demonstrated to exist in apple trees. These phases were closely related to the ease of regeneration of roots on stems. Stem cuttings of wood in the mature phase were very difficult to root without special treatments, while those made from shoots in the juvenile phase rooted very readily; The juvenile condition was recognized by thinner leaves with much less pubescence. Anthocyanin production was much more abundant in juvenile shoots. In some species of apple the shape of the leaf changed with maturity from an entire to a lobed form;Shoots having the juvenile characteristics of ...

The Relation Of Root Reserves To Cold Resistance In Alfalfa , Jesse Jarue Mark Jan 1935

The Relation Of Root Reserves To Cold Resistance In Alfalfa , Jesse Jarue Mark

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Roots from Grimm alfalfa that had been subjected to different cutting treatments were collected during summer, fall, and winter and the amount of reserves determined;Frequent cutting checked root growth 50 percent or more. The root reserves were higher in the uncut plants than in the cut plants. The period of greatest difference was during October and November; The amount of reserve materials in the roots of cut and uncut plants was positively correlated with cold resistance in both artificial freezing tests and in field tests; The starch and dextrin decreased in autumn and early winter. The non-reducing sugars increased ...

Relation Of The Differential Fertilization Genes, Ga Ga, To Certain Other Genes Of The Su-Tu Linkage Group Of Maize, R. A. Emerson

Agronomy & Horticulture -- Faculty Publications

The Ga, or “gamete” gene of maize can be studied only or principally by its disturbance of normal Mendelian ratios of contrasted characters differentiated by genes linked with it. The amount of this disturbance can be used as a measure of the intensity of linkage between Ga and other genes of the su-Tu group.

Disturbance of the 3:1 ratio of starchy, Su, to sugary, su, endosperm has been most studied. In one of the early papers on Mendelian inheritance, Correns (1902) reported that, although crosses between most starchy and sugary varieties gave an F2 ratio of 3:1 ...
