Ammi majus L. is an imperiled medicinal plant, which contains various medically important and uncommon extraordinary secondary metabolite compounds. An efficient organogenesis protocol was established for Ammi majus through in vitro process of leaf callusing, shooting and rooting by using different combination of auxins and cytokinins. In vitro cultured juvenile leaf explants were used directly for callus formation on MS supplemented with different concentration of IAA, Kn and CH. The developed protocol describes a cheaper, quicker and reliable method for the isolation of pure DNA from medicinal herbs, such as Ammi majus, which produces the secondary metabolites xanthotoxin and berganpectane having immense medicinal importance. BACKGROUND: Alpinia pahangensis, a wild ginger distributed in the lowlands of Pahang, Malaysia, is used by the locals to treat flatulence. In this study, the antioxidant and cytotoxic activities of the crude aqueous methanol and fractionated extracts of Alpinia pahangensis against five different cancer and one normal cell lines were investigated. Brassinosteroids (BRs) are steroidal hormones that play pivotal roles during plant development. In addition to the characterization of BR deficient mutants, specific BR biosynthesis inhibitors played an essential role in the elucidation of BR function in plants. However, high costs and limited availability of common BR biosynthetic inhibitors constrain their key advantage as a species-independent tool to investigate BR function. 1'-(S)-1'-Acetoxychavicol acetate (ACA) isolated from the Malaysian ethno-medicinal plant Alpinia conchigera Griff. was investigated for its potential as an anticancer drug. In this communication, we describe the cytotoxic and apoptotic properties of ACA on five human tumour cell lines. Data from MTT cell viability assays indicated that ACA induced both time- and dose-dependent cytotoxicity on all tumour cell lines tested and had no adverse cytotoxic effects on normal cells. The study showed that application of different doses of inorganic nutrients had considerable influence on growth, yield and downy mildew interaction in isabgol (Plantago ovata). It included three levels of nitrogen (0, 30, 60 kg N ha–1), two levels of phosphorous (0, 30 kg P ha–1) and two levels of potash (0, 40 kg K ha–1) for 2 consecutive years. Sera of IgA nephropathy (IgAN) patients and normal subjects were analysed by two-dimensional (2-D) gel electrophoresis. Densitometric analysis of the 2-D gels of IgAN patients and normal subjects revealed that their protein maps were comparable. There was no shift of pI values in the major alpha-heavy chain spots. However, the volume of the alpha-heavy chain bands were differently distributed. Distribution was significantly lower at the anionic region in IgAN patients (mean anionic:cationic ratio of 1.184 +/- 0.311) as compared to normal healthy controls (mean anionic:cationic ratio of 2.139 +/- 0.538). One-year-old plants of Datura innoxia growing in natural condition in the Hamdard University campus, New Delhi (normal site) and around the Badarpur thermal power plant, New Delhi (polluted site), were studied and compared for their vegetative growth and pollen viability. The power plant emits 1450 tonnes fly ash and 100 tonnes sulphur dioxide per day. Significant variation was found in plant growth, biomass and pollen viability of the two population. Our group has previously reported the isolation, partial characterisation, and application of a Galbeta1-3GalNAc- and IgA1-reactive lectin from the seeds of champedak (Artocarpus integer). In the present study, we have subjected the purified lectin to reverse-phase high performance liquid chromatography and sequenced its subunits. Determination of the N-terminal sequence of the first 47 residues of the large subunit demonstrated at least 95% homology to the N-terminal sequence of the alpha chains of a few other galactose-binding Artocarpus lectins, The two smaller subunits of the lectin, each comprised of 21 amino acid residues, demonstrated minor sequence variability. Effect of coal-smoke pollution on Datura innoxia Mill. was investigated. D. innoxia has shown that leaf length, single leaf area, total leaf area and leaves per plant decreased but leaf biomass increased under pollution stress. Epidermal features of upper and lower leaf surface responded to pollution stress differently. Rate of photosynthesis and stomatal conductance were low, internal CO2 concentration was high and levels of chlorophyll a and b, total chlorophyll and carotenoids were reduced in polluted condition. A mannose-binding lectin, termed champedak lectin-M, was isolated from an extract of the crude seeds of champedak (Artocarpus integer). On gel filtration chromatography, the lectin eluted in a single peak at elution volumes corresponding to 64 kDa, SDS-PAGE showed the mannose-binding lectin to be composed of 16.8 kDa polypeptides with some of the polypeptides being disulphide-linked to give dimers. To correctlyr analyse the physical properties of ion channels and the actions of drugs upon them, it is important that the membrane conducts only the ionic species believed permeant. In guinea-pig ventricular cells it has been assumed that only ICaL flows in the potential range -50 to +60 mV in the presence of intra- and extracellular Cs (> 20 mM). We report here that this is not the case due to the presence of a Cs-insensitive, transient outward current.

Cytosolic free Ca was measured with Indo-1 (Grynkiewicz et al. 1985) as free acid (in guinea-pig cells) or as the ester (in rat neonate cells). Using image analysis we obtained concentration maps at 40 ms intervals at two wavelengths (Cannell et al. 1986). In rat neonate cells, at rest and during contraction, calcium was apparently non-uniformly distributed, in contrast to guinea-pig adult cells. Using a dual PM spectroscopic system adapted to an inverted microscope we found: (1) the conversion of Indo-AM to Indo- 1 in the cytosol is not complete (< 40% contribution to the total light); (2) rat neonate cells buffer Ca (at rest 130-170 nM) only for [Ca]. between 1 and 3 mM, whereas in adult guinea-pig cells the range extended to 10 mM; (3) during contraction [Ca]i rose from 200 nm to no more than 1 microM. Digitoxin increases basal and peak [Ca]i; (4) during spontaneous contractions, in guinea-pig cells, [Ca]i rises from 70 to 200 nm when [Ca]o = 0, and from 170 nm to about 1 microM when [Ca]o = 2 mM; (5) in voltage-clamp conditions the rise in [Ca]i does not exceed 2 microM and oscillations occur in the presence of forskolin. When loading with Indo-1, cells frequently cease to contract (Powell et al. 1988) and the variations in [Ca]i are then very small (about 200 nm at peak ICa). In both cases these values are small compared to the total charge crossing the membrane.
