Osmophore Development In Stanhopea Anfracta And S. Pulla (Orchidaceae), Kenneth Curry Mar 2012

Osmophore Development In Stanhopea Anfracta And S. Pulla (Orchidaceae), Kenneth Curry

Kenneth J. Curry

The developmental anatomy and morphology of the floral scent glands (osmophores) were examined daily from the late bud stage to post-anthesis, for 2 species which are considered to be at opposite poles in the evolutionary development of the genus. The osmophore of S. anfracta was studied using morphometric techniques to estimate volume density of selected cellular inclusions, whereas the osmophore of S. pulla was examined qualitatively. The volume density of starch/amyloplast in S. anfracta remained relatively constant throughout most of the two-day flowering period as did the degree of cell vacuolation. The flower of S. pulla lasts only one ...

Pigments For Improving Plant Health In Organic Systems, Gregory Keith Bartley Jr. Apr 2011

Pigments For Improving Plant Health In Organic Systems, Gregory Keith Bartley Jr.

Gregory Keith Bartley Jr.

Photosynthesis, arguably the most important biological process on earth, solely relies on the ability of pigments to capture, utilize, and convert the sun‟s energy to form life. The adequate conversion of light into harvestable food, fuel, and fiber regulates rates of population and economic growth. In order to meet the expanding needs of humanity with the earth‟s potential for agricultural production, new sustainable techniques for increased photosynthetic efficiency in plants must be implemented. The earth's pattern of light exposure is extremely dynamic, exhibiting constant changes in quantity and quality throughout time and space. For photosynthetic organisms, this ...

The Effect Of Water And Nitrogen On The Response Of Sorghum Cultivars With Contrasting Nitrogen Use Efficiency, Teshome Regassa Apr 2004

The Effect Of Water And Nitrogen On The Response Of Sorghum Cultivars With Contrasting Nitrogen Use Efficiency, Teshome Regassa

Teshome H. Regassa

Water and nitrogen (N) are important environmental factors limiting sorghum production. Information is lacking on the combined effects of water and N for cultivars with different degrees of water and/or N stress tolerance. Sorghum cultivars known for N and water stress tolerance difference were evaluated to identify plant characteristics contributing to N use efficiency (NUE). Cultivars San Chi San and CK-60 were evaluated at Mead, NE on a Sharpsburg silty clay loam soil under water (stress and non-stress), and N (0, 40, 80, and 120 kg ha−1) rates. Experimental units were arranged in split-split plot and treatments were ...
