Compositional And Taphonomic Variations In Modern Crinoid-Rich Sediments From The Deep-Water Margin Of A Carbonate Bank, Ghislaine Llewellyn, Charles G. Messing

Multivariate analyses of the coarse-grained fraction (>2 mm) of sediments accumulating in deep water (419-434 m) along the western margin of the Little Bahama Bank reveal identifiable, small-scale compositional and taphonomic variations among local subhabitats (ridge crest, slope, foreslope, base of slope, pavements and scour pit) separated by meters to tens of meters. Bulk composition varies between planktic-(crest and slope) and lithic-dominated (pavements, scour pit) sediments. Local macrobenthic skeletal components also vary significantly among subhabitats, but are commonly dominated by echinoid and crinoid material; crinoid columnals contribute 9-52% of the coarse skeletal component of 17 sediment samples considered. Degradation rates of benzene, p-xylene, naphthalene, and o-dichlorobenzene have been measured in a heterogeneous, unconfined aquifer during a pulse injection experiment at Columbus Air Force Base, Columbus, Mississippi. Dissolved oxygen in the pulse plume maintained aerobic conditions. Degradation kinetics calculated from the complete field data set were approximately first order with the following rate constants: benzene, 0.0070 d-1; p-xylene, 0.0107 d-1; naphthalene, 0.0064 d-1; and o-dichlorobenzene, 0.0046 d-1. Reaction rates were also calculated from a near-field subset of the data using a model based on the hydrologic characteristics of the aquifer. Abundances of chroococcoid cyanobacteria and heterotrophic bacteria in surface waters of the York River subestuary covary with spring-neap tidally induced changes in the mixed-layer depth. Abundances of their principal grazers, heterotrophic protists, however, do not oscillate. A simulation model of this system using nonlinear, density-dependent functions has been developed to replicate cycles observed in the two bacterial abundances and simulate bacterial production and protistan grazing. A Jassby-Plan equation is used to determine growth rate from the mean mixed-layer light and empirically derived growth and a parameters. Changes in mixed-layer depth regulate light availability, thereby controlling cyanobacterial growth rates. The model …

Oceanic phytoplankton are known to fix CO2 primarily through the action of the enzyme ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase (RuBPCase). The amino acid and nucleotide sequence of the large subunit of this enzyme have been conserved across the evolution of the chlorophytic plants (from cyanobacteria to higher plants via green algae) with approximately 80 and 70 % homology at the amino acid and nucleotide levels respectively. To understand the molecular regulation of this enzyme in phytoplankton, we have measured levels of the RuBPCase large subunit (rbcL) mRNA and DNA, in combination with rates of photosynthetic CO2 fixation, autofluorescent cell counts, and chlorophyll a …

This report documents the January 1993 monitoring of benthic macroinvertebrate assemblages in the Port Everglades Southport turning basin vicinity and adjacent areas of John U. Lloyd State Recreation Area. This is the fourth monitoring effort of the series carried out by Nova University Oceanographic Center. Sampling was carried out during 4-15 January and 1-22 February 1993, the extended period due chiefly to weather and tidal constraints. Comparison with results of preceding survey efforts will be included in the annual report following the August 1993 survey. Using COADS data spanning 1947-1988, we describe the regional nature of the Atlantic Ocean wind-driven circulation between 30-degrees-S and 60-degrees-N and its annual and interannual variability. The Sverdrup streamfunction defines the circulation gyres. Our focus is on three central gyres: the Northern Hemisphere anticyclonic subtropical gyre, the cyclonic tropical gyre just north of the equator, and the clockwise equatorial gyre straddling the equator. This rendition of the Sverdrup streamfunction, computed with constant drag coefficient and air density, compares favorably with that from other climatologies. In the Straits of Florida, analyses suggest that differences between the annual cycle in Sverdrup transport …

The lower Chesapeake Bay spawning stock of the blue crab, Callinectes sapidus, (Rathbun), is examined for seven years (1986 - 1992) in an attempt to better understand stock behavior. Three methods of post-stratification are used to describe the distribution and movement of the population over time. The three methods, density strata, geographic zones, and depth strata, did well in explaining movements of the population, indicating a trend of increased concentration of blue crabs near the eastern Bay late in the spawning season - October. The data suggest a bimodal period of spawning and a trimodal period of abundance. The …

Recent stock assessments indicate that the shark stock of the western North Atlantic is exploited at a rate twice the maximum sustainable yield. This finding is supported by data generated by the Virginia Institute of Marine Science longline program for sharks of the. Chesapeake Bay and adjacent coastal waters. Trends in catch per unit of effort since 1974 indicate 60-80% reductions in population size for the common species - sandbar (Carcharhinus plumbeus) , dusky (C. obscurus) , sand tiger (Odontaspis taurus), and tiger (Galeocerdo cuvier) sharks. In 1990. Nova University (Contractor) with Coral Reef Associates and ERM South (Subcontractors) was awarded a contract to provide biological monitoring services for the Hollywood Hallandale Beach Renourishment Project. A notice to proceed for the initial biological monitoring (Pre-construction) was issued in September. 1990. Pre-construction field monitoring took place in October. 1990. Renourishment dredging began in April and ended August, 1991. Approximately 1.2 million cubic yards of sediment were removed and subsequently emplaced on 5 miles of shoreline. An investigation was made of physical effects of Gulf Stream meandering on the vertical and horizontal distributions of photosynthetic pigments and primary production. Cruises were conducted in the vicinity of a meander east of 73-degrees-W and north of 37-degrees-N from September 21 to October 5 (leg 1) and October 12-21, 1988 (leg 2), on the R/V Cape Hatteras. Relationships of photosynthesis (normalized to chlorophyll) to irradiance (P-1) did not show large horizontal variation, and water column composite P-I curves from leg 1 and leg 2 were similar. Therefore a single P-I curve derived from pooled data was used to model …

Atlantic croaker, Micropogonias undulatus, collected from commercial catches in Chesapeake Bay and in Virginia and North Carolina coastal waters during 1988-1991 (n=1,967) were aged from transverse otolith sections. Ages 1-8 were recorded, but eight-year-old fish were rare. Marginal increment analysis showed that for ages 1-7, annuli are formed once a year during the period April-May. Otolith age readings were precise: >99% agreement within and between readers. Observed lengths-at-age were highly variable and growth rate decreased after the first year. Despite the high variability in sizes-at-age, observed lengths for ages 1-7 fit the von Bertalanffy growth model (r2=0.99; n=753) well. …

Little is known concerning the factors which might control the distribution of viral abundance in oceanic environments and the relationship of viruses to the oceanic DNA pool. We have measured the distribution of viruses, bacterioplankton and phytoplankton in the subtropical southeastern Gulf of Mexico and related these parameters to the distribution of DNA (dissolved and particulate) in these waters. Viral direct counts were 4.6 to 27 x 10(6) ml-1 in Tampa Bay (Florida, USA), 3.8 to 8.5 x 10(5) ml-1 in all oceanic euphotic zone samples and 1.4 to 4.7 x 10(4) ml-1 in deep (200 to 2500 m) waters, …

Growth rates, body weight, density and biomass of ribbed mussels, Geukensia demissa (Dillwyn), were determined at Spartina alterniflora marsh-flat sites in Jamaica Bay, New York (Lower Hudson Estuary). Cumulative growth and annual growth increments varied but rates were lower at sites within the central bay relative to peripheral sites. Local variability both in size at Ring-1 and size-specific annual growth rates probably account for the variability in cumulative length. No pattersn were noted in frequency distributions of shell size but congruence in age structure was observed among neighboring sites in some areas of the bay. Mussel densities were greater within …

Florida Bay is a major nursery for the Caribbean spiny lobster, Panulirus argus. The Bay contains a series of hardbottom or seagrass-covered basins separated by mudbanks, which serve as barriers to water circulation and presumably to transport of postlarvae. Temperatures can fluctuate dramatically in the basins and salinities range from 35 ppt to > 50 ppt. In this study I: i) investigated the physiological tolerance of spiny lobster postlarvae to combinations of temperature and salinity representative of conditions in Florida Bay, and ii) examined how postlarval availability and habitat structure influence spiny lobster recruitment into basins. Zonal volume transport is examined over the upper 150 m of the water column at 28-degrees-W, using the Seasonal Response of the Equatorial Atlantic experiment moored current meter data at 0.75-degrees-S, 0.0-degrees, and 0.75-degrees-N and a time domain empirical orthogonal function (EOF) analysis to improve spatial and temporal resolution. Gaussian distributions are fit to the mean volume transports per unit width and the fluctuations about these means that are found to be represented by a single EOF mode. Two time- and space-dependent, physical-bio-optical models have been developed for the California Coastal Transition Zone (CTZ) region with the overall objective of understanding and quantifying the processes th at contribute to the spatial and temporal development of nutrient and plankton distributions in the CTZ. The first of these models considers only time- and vertical processes at specific locations in the CTZ. The model food web components include: silicate, nitrate, ammonium, two phytoplankton size fractions, copepods, doliolids, euphausiids and a detritus pool.
