Pb1744 Quality Hardwood Veneer, The University Of Tennessee Agricultural Extension Service May 2004

Pb1744 Quality Hardwood Veneer, The University Of Tennessee Agricultural Extension Service

Forestry, Trees, and Timber

Private forest landowners have long understood that some trees are distinguished as being exceptional. Not every forest contains such rare trees. In the hardwood industry, such trees are termed veneer. From veneer trees come veneer logs; from veneer logs come veneer sheets. Unlike most logs that are processed into conventional lumber, veneer sheets are thin layers of wood produced by slicing logs.

Essentially any log can be processed as veneer. However, for hardwood trees, normally only those logs of desired species and with the finest characteristics are selected. This is especially the case when the finished wood product is …

Remote Sensing Of Sagebrush Community Structural Patterns Across Scales, Lisa A. Langs May 2004

Remote Sensing Of Sagebrush Community Structural Patterns Across Scales, Lisa A. Langs

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Throughout the Intermountain West there has been a substantial reduction in both the quantity and quality of sagebrush ecosystems. To assist current range management objectives, numerous efforts have been made to classify and map sagebrush communities using remotely sensed data. However, the amount of detail provided by these broad-scale mapping projects is often limited. This research evaluated the ability of a suite of airborne and satellite imagery to detect sagebrush community structural attributes, specifically percent canopy cover, live cover, density, size-vigor, and spatial arrangement of shrubs. Field data was collected at Camp Williams National Guard Training Facility near Bluffdale, Utah, …

Greenstrip Establishment And Management In The Intermountain West, Brenda Kristine Younkin-Kury May 2004

Greenstrip Establishment And Management In The Intermountain West, Brenda Kristine Younkin-Kury

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Greenstrips were established at two sites in Utah to determine if seeded, grazed cool-season, perennial grasses would change fire behavior characteristics in areas currently dominated by Bromus tectorum. Frequency data were collected for both grazed and ungrazed seeded species and resident weed species. Moderate spring grazing did not negatively impact the establishment of seeded species at Camp Williams. Grazing at Promontory Point decreased Agropyron desertorum frequency and increased the frequency of Pascopyrum smithii. Biomass data collected for grazed and ungrazed treatments in both years indicated that moderate spring or winter grazing the first two years of establishment did …

Cougar Exploitation Levels In Utah: Implications For Demographic Structure, Metapopulation Dynamics, And Population Recovery, David C. Stoner May 2004

Cougar Exploitation Levels In Utah: Implications For Demographic Structure, Metapopulation Dynamics, And Population Recovery, David C. Stoner

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Presently, eleven western states and two Canadian provinces utilize sport hunting as the primary mechanism for managing cougar (Puma concolor) populations. However, the impacts of sustained harvest on population dynamics and demographic structure arc not well understood. Additionally, the lack of cost-effective enumeration techniques and strongly conflicting societal values complicate effective management of this species. Given these concerns, the primary goals of this study were (I) to determine the effects of sustained harvest on cougar populations, and (2) estimate the level and extent of cougar harvest statewide.

I monitored cougar populations on Monroe Mountain in south-central Utah, and …

Quantifying Losses Of Understory Forage In Aspen Stands On The Dixie And Fishlake National Forests, Barton R. Stam May 2004

Quantifying Losses Of Understory Forage In Aspen Stands On The Dixie And Fishlake National Forests, Barton R. Stam

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The West has lost up to 60% of its historic aspen stands over the last century, probably as a result of the successional tendency of aspen to be replaced by coniferous species in the absence of periodic fires. One of several major impacts of this change is the loss of understory forage as conifer canopy cover increases. I measured understory biomass in aspen stands ranging from 0% to 81 % absolute conifer cover in the canopy and found that understory production declines exponentially as conifers replace aspen. I also did an economic analysis to determine the value of the forage …

Crop Tree Management In West Tennessee: A Traditional Financial Analysis, Scott Lorenz Twillmann May 2004

Crop Tree Management In West Tennessee: A Traditional Financial Analysis, Scott Lorenz Twillmann

Masters Theses

Crop tree management was designed to fulfill a combination of goals such as wildlife, aesthetics, and timber management. This silviculture method was designed for small woodlots with high value species and can be easily understood by non-industrial private landowners. It focuses on selecting and releasing trees that will yield multiple benefits to the landowner.

The purpose of this study was to determine if crop tree management on an upland oak site in west Tennessee was a financially attractive option for individual landowners. The primary objective of this study was to determine the profitability of crop tree management by examining different …

Snow Avalanche Disturbance In Intermountain Spruce-Fir Forests And Implications For The Spruce Bark Beetle (Coleoptera: Scolytidae), Elizabeth G. Hebertson May 2004

Snow Avalanche Disturbance In Intermountain Spruce-Fir Forests And Implications For The Spruce Bark Beetle (Coleoptera: Scolytidae), Elizabeth G. Hebertson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Spruce beetle outbreaks are the primary biotic disturbance affecting forests in the Intermountain spruce-fir zone. Major snow avalanches can produce large quantities of host material for spruce beetle colonization; however, few studies have examined the influence of avalanche disturbance on outbreak initiation. The purpose of my research was to investigate potential relationships between these two disturbance agents. In the first study, I used dendro-ecological analyses to date major avalanche years on the Wasatch Plateau in south-central Utah, and then determined what climate factors were associated with avalanche occurrence. The results indicated that mean January snowfall was significantly related to the …

Computer-Based Tools For Decision Support In Agroforestry: Current State And Future Needs, E. A. Ellis, G. Bentrup, M. M. Schoeneberger Apr 2004

Computer-Based Tools For Decision Support In Agroforestry: Current State And Future Needs, E. A. Ellis, G. Bentrup, M. M. Schoeneberger

USDA Forest Service / UNL Faculty Publications

Successful design of agroforestry practices hinges on the ability to pull together very diverse and sometimes large sets of information (i.e., biophysical, economic and social factors), and then implementing the synthesis of this information across several spatial scales from site to landscape. Agroforestry, by its very nature, creates complex systems with impacts ranging from the site or practice level up to the landscape and beyond. Computer-based Decision Support Tools (DST) help to integrate information to facilitate the decision-making process that directs development, acceptance, adoption, and management aspects in agroforestry. Computer-based DSTs include databases, geographical information systems, models, knowledge-base or expert …

Project Report No. 64, Observed Growth And Yield Of Loblolly And Slash Pine Plantations In East Texas, Dean W. Coble, Shiaolin Cheng Apr 2004

Project Report No. 64, Observed Growth And Yield Of Loblolly And Slash Pine Plantations In East Texas, Dean W. Coble, Shiaolin Cheng

Informal Project Reports

The amount of forestland in east Texas has been estimated at 11.8 million acres, with approximately 2.5 million acres classified as pine plantations. The majority ofthese plantations are owned by forest industry (71 percent), while non-industrial private forest landowners represent the next largest shareholder (23 percent). Pine plantations are typically managed to produce timber, so information is needed to make informed management decisions. Growth is one piece of information that managers often rely upon in their decision-making process.

Determining Differences In Quality Between The Gravure And Flexographic Process On Films, Pete Welther Apr 2004

Determining Differences In Quality Between The Gravure And Flexographic Process On Films, Pete Welther

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

Quality is the goal of every printing company. Every day printing companies spend money trying to find ways to improve the quality of their product. Type of paper, ink, and even the types of printing processes are all characteristics looked at when determining the quality of a printed product.

In today's printing industry, there are two printing processes that have arguably jumped to the front in terms of the highest quality printing ability. The flexographic process and the gravure process have both risen to meet the standards of high quality. The gravure process has always been at the top. For …

Legislative Intent, Science And Special Provisions In Wilderness: A Process For Navigating Statutory Compromises, Alan E. Watson, Michael Patterson, Neal Christensen, Annette Puttkammer, Shannon Meyer Apr 2004

Legislative Intent, Science And Special Provisions In Wilderness: A Process For Navigating Statutory Compromises, Alan E. Watson, Michael Patterson, Neal Christensen, Annette Puttkammer, Shannon Meyer

Forest Management Faculty Publications

In order to manage special provisions in U.S. wilderness, several research products are needed. Minimally, a complete understanding of the legislative intent of the provision, in-depth understanding of the deep meanings held by the particular stakeholder community of interest, and some knowledge about the larger population of interest are needed. In this study of jet boat use on the Salmon River in the Frank Church– River of No Return Wilderness, a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods were used to understand the attachment jet boat users have to the activity and the place.

Strengthening Of Corrugated Boards By Chemical Impregnation, Rajesh Premnarayansingh Apr 2004

Strengthening Of Corrugated Boards By Chemical Impregnation, Rajesh Premnarayansingh

Masters Theses

Linerboards are used for making corrugated boards. The paperboards can be strengthened by adding strength additives at the wet-end of the paper machine and also by sizing them. Impregnation is another effective approach of strengthening the paperboards, mostly offline. The aim of the thesis is to evaluate the performance of the modified Dixon coater and check the operating conditions with various chemicals used for impregnating 42 lb/1000 sq.ft grammage linerboard.

The major conclusions of the research were that the edge compression strength increases markedly validating the usage of impregnation for linerboards. Also, the stiffness of linerboard increases and the voids …

Efectos De Las Plantaciones De Árboles Exóticos Y El Movimiento Mapuche, Shannon Ryan Apr 2004

Efectos De Las Plantaciones De Árboles Exóticos Y El Movimiento Mapuche, Shannon Ryan

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

This is a paper about my interpretations of the forest industry in the IX region of Chile and the effects it has as I saw and heard about them from the people I talked to. It is not an objective paper and my own perspective is evident throughout. What I think brings credibility to the paper is the fact that it reveals a reality that I experienced directly, in the communities and offices of the people who lives are effected by the plantations. I realize that a great deal of the paper sounds very sensationalized, but it is because I …
