Assessing Changing Carbon Pool Dynamics And Species Composition In A Pennsylvania Broadleaf Forest Fragment, Kyleigh Levinsky, Jessica L. Schedlbauer
Sustainability Research & Creative Activities Grants Reports
Temperate broadleaf forests are pivotal to the global carbon cycle, Representing 37% of the global forest carbon pool (Pan et al 2011). • Maintaining compositional diversity in temperate broadleaf forests, such as the Gordon Natural Area (GNA) is critical to maintaining ecosystem services, such as carbon sequestration. • Pressures from native and non-native herbivores threaten the biodiversity of temperate broadleaf forests in the United States (Ghandi et al. 2010). The introduction of non-native insects such as the emerald ash borer (Argrilus planipennis), as well as the overpopulation of white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) has led to declines in some tree species. …

West Chester University Green Legacy Project - Collections Management Plan, Office Of Sustainability
West Chester University Green Legacy Project - Collections Management Plan, Office Of Sustainability
WCU Campus Sustainability Initiatives
The Green Legacy Project (GLP) was developed in 2009 to understand the value of the trees on the West Chester University campus. The overall goal of the GLP is to maintain a database of the current state of the university’s trees. This survey includes the collection of the field data of the trees (common name, Latin name, native status, Global Positioning System (GPS) location, diameter at breast height (DBH), height, ground cover, die back, and condition). These data are also analyzed using CITYgreen by American Forests as well as the i-Tree ECO model of the United States Department of Agriculture …

West Chester University Tree Care Policy, Grounds Department
WCU Campus Sustainability Initiatives
The purpose of the West Chester University Tree Care Policy is to identify the policies, procedures, and practices that are used in establishing, protecting, maintaining, and removing trees on the West Chester University campus. The overall goal of the plan is to ensure a safe, attractive, and sustainable campus urban forest. By remaining true to this purpose the first impression of potential students and visitors are more apt to be positive.

Sustainability Research & Creative Activities Grants Reports
West Chester University’s (WCU’s) Office of Sustainabilty awarded grant funding to Dr. Joan Welch (jwelch@wcupa.edu) to hire students (Eric Chapman, Kimmy Kutzler, and Connie Driegder) to develop a geodatabase and then inventory and map the street trees in West Chester Borough during May and June of 2018. The grant funding of $2000 was used to pay the students, and the data collection provided for 180 student hours of work to be expended before June 30, 2018.
A Method For Estimating The Current And Future Carbon Content Of Standing Biomass Applied To Gishwati Forest Reserve, Rwanda, David Courard-Houri, Rebecca Chancellor, Aaron S. Rundus, A. Boland
A Method For Estimating The Current And Future Carbon Content Of Standing Biomass Applied To Gishwati Forest Reserve, Rwanda, David Courard-Houri, Rebecca Chancellor, Aaron S. Rundus, A. Boland
Anthropology & Sociology Faculty Publications
The carbon content of standing tree biomass was determined in the Gishwati Forest Reserve in north-western Rwanda and growth potential of the forest was estimated using a straightforward, generalisable model of natural forest regeneration. A survey was conducted on 2289 trees in plots throughout the reserve. Wood density data were obtained from literature and tree biomass was estimated using a recent pan-tropical allometric equation. A survey on United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) projects showed that current methods of growth rate projection for mixed, non-plantation forests might significantly overestimate the amount of carbon sequestered. …

Historical Tree Fall Study Documents
Since Superstorm Sandy in October 2012, Kendra McMillin and Gerry Hertel monitored tree fall in the Gordon Natural Area. After Sandy there was a wind event in August, 2013 and then the ice storm in February 2014 which caused further tree fall.

Five Year Carbon Storage Analysis In The Gordon Natural Area, Joy Fritschle, Chad Hudson, Catherine Spahr, Andy Tamez
Five Year Carbon Storage Analysis In The Gordon Natural Area, Joy Fritschle, Chad Hudson, Catherine Spahr, Andy Tamez
Forest Carbon Storage Study Documents
The Gordon Natural Area (GNA) serves as a natural laboratory for a range of class research projects. In a Geography Field Methods course led by Dr. Fritschle, students established five permanent carbon-study plots in 2008. Since then, students have returned to these plots to measure the carbon stock of standing trees in five plots located along a topographic gradient: floodplain, ridge-top, lower mid-slope, mid-slope and upper mid-slope. Using U.S. Forest Service established guidelines, all trees greater than 5 cm and up to 73 cm in diameter at breast height (DBH) were measured and identified within each 40 m circular plot. …
