Evaluating Parents And Prediciting Performance Of Synthetic Alfalfa Varieties, Thad H. Busbice, Ramzy Y. Gurgis

One hundred random clones from 'Cherokee' alfalfa (Mediccigo sativa L.) were evaluated by self-(S,), topcross-, and clonal-progeny tests. Clonal progenies were most effective, topcross progenies moderately effective, and S, progenies the least effective in predicting first-cross yield. Forage yield was mostly independent of self-fertility. Nine clones were selected for yielding ability based on the progeny tests. The nine clones, their S, families, the diallel set of single-cross families from the nine clones, and the Syn 1 and Syn 2 generations of 10 synthetic varieties from the nine clones were evaluated. The following observations were made on tours in the Central Provinces and Berar, in 1908 and 1909. The first of the tours comprised a visit to the hill of Asirgarb in Nimar (26-28. ix. 08) and a journey by road from Ellichpur over the Satpuras through the forests of the Melghat to Lewada where the Sipna valley opens towards the river Tapti, (3-19. x. 09): the second comprised a visit to Nagpur (14-22. ii. 09) and the third an excursion into the Melghat from Akot, along the Ban valley and to Jalgaon in the Buldana district (16-'-26. ix. 09). Les Nectarina ou Nectarines sont des Vespides vivant en sociétés très nombreuses et pérennes. Leur industrie est grande et leur nidification des plus remarquables. Elles habitent uniquement les contrér,s chaudes et tempérées de l'Amérique. On les trouve répandues depuis ie Mexique jusque dans la Bépublique Argentine. Elles ont été signalées depuis fort longtemps, parce qu'elles emmagasinent du miel dans les alvéoles de leurs nids, particularité bien connue des voyageurs, qui la tinrent d'abord des Indiens.
