Abstract The genus Chalcasthenes Arrow (Dynastinae: Oryctoderini), a scarab beetle genus endemic to the Solomon Islands, is reviewed. Based on examination of type specimens, the genus Strehlia Frey (Rutelinae: Rutelini: Parastasiina) is a new junior synonym of Chalcasthenes. The historical classification of these genera (either in the subfamily Dynastinae or Rutelinae) and character-based criteria for assigning the taxa to the Dynastinae are provided. We discuss character states that support the monophyly of members of the genus Chalcasthenes, comment on the distribution and biogeography of species in the genus and provide a key to species. Hemiphileurus ryani and H. phratrius, new species of dynastine scarabs, are described from the Dominican Republic. They are compared to their closest congeners. A new key to the nine species of Hemiphileurus Kolbe that occur in the West Indies is provided along with diagnostic illustrations of the male parameres.

The following new species of Hemiphileurus are described: H. bispinosus Ratcliffe from Brazil, H. deslislesi Ratcliffe from Colombia, H. quadridentatus Ratcliffe from Guatemala, and H. warneri Ratcliffe from Mexico. The parameres of H. rugulosus Endrödi (Venezuela and Colombia) are illustrated to enable easier identification of this species, and H. kahni Dupuis and Dechambre is redescribed and recorded from Brazil for the first time. Diagnostic illustrations of the male parameres are provided for the above taxa. A checklist for all the species in the genus is given.

Brook trout Salvelinus fontinalis and other salmonids in Appalachia typically inhabit headwater watersheds, where food resources may limit growth. We monitored the feeding trends of a brook trout population in central Appalachia over the course of 2 years to determine variation in feeding intensity and important prey items. One terrestrial beetle family, Scarabaeidae, provided a disproportionate amount of energy during the only time of year when brook trout were feeding substantially above maintenance ration. Scarab beetles contributed 39.6% of all energy consumed during May and June of both years, though the number of fish with one or more scarabaeids present …

Neoscelis coracina Mudge et Ratcliffe sp. n., from Jalisco, Mexico, is described and illustrated. Intraspecific variation is discussed, and diagnostic characters separating N. coracina sp. n. from N. dohrni (Westwood, 1855) are given. The key to males of New World Goliathini is revised. Notes on habitat, behavior, and collecting N. coracina sp. n. are included. A new state record is provided for N. dohrni.

Cyclocephala aravaipensis n.sp. and C. warneri n.sp. are described from Arizona, U.S.A. and Chiapas, Mexico, respectively. An unusual melanistic form of C. melanocephala (Fab.) is reported from two localities in northeastern Quintana Roo, Mexico.

Copris maesi, new species, is described from Nicaragua. This species is unlike any other New World Copris Miiller because of the single, long, pronotal horn. Its characters place it outside of any known Copris species group.

Trox hamatus Robinson was observed feeding on an abandoned Canthon brood ball in southeastern Nebraska. Although some Aphodiinae and Scarabaeinae have been reported feeding on or stealing other scarabaeine dung balls, this represents the first reported observation of this behavior for a member of the Troginae. It is suggested that the brood ball was opportunistically used by the Trox, and the event is rare. In addition, new state records are provided for Trox aequalis Say, T. atrox LeConte, T. laticollis LeConte, and T. tesselatus (LeConte).

As an extension of the silphid research by the senior author, an experiment was conducted to ascertain the differences, if any, in silphid species that would be attracted by placing covered and uncovered animal carcasses in the field. A review of the literature indicated that nothing has been published in this regard. In eastern Nebraska silphids are very active in the spring, their numbers being greater at this time of year than at any other. Two species of dynastine scarab beetles are reported for the first time on the island of Hawaii: the Pasadena masked chafer, Cyclocephala pasadenae (Casey) (Scarabaeidae: Dynastinae: Cyclocephalini) from North America and Temnorhynchus retusus (Fabricius) (Scarabaeidae: Dynastinae: Pentodontini) from Africa. The Pasadena masked chafer is established on the island of Hawaii, is a recognized pest of turf grass, and is a concern for agriculture and native Hawaiian arthropod species. Temnorhynchus retusus is not known to be an agricultural pest, but its spread on the islands could pose a problem for Hawaiian native species. The seven genera and 13 species of dynastine scarabs recorded from the Bahamas are reviewed. Two of those species are endemic, including Cyclocephala dolichotarsa Ratcliffe and Cave, new species, described from Great Inagua Island. Eleven species are also known to occur in the USA and/or Cuba. Six species are probably not established based on infrequency of collection.

The endangered American burying beetle, Nicrophorus americanus Olivier, was previously widespread throughout eastern North America. In the past century numbers of this beetle have drastically declined and currently remnant populations are known from only six states despite intensive surveying efforts conducted for the last nine years. Efforts aimed at discovering and managing remnant populations have been generally limited by a lack of knowledge concerning N. americanus biology. We used baited pitfall traps to define the range of the Gothenburg, Nebraska, population of N. americanus. Although rocks of floodplain origin are volumetrically important, they contain relatively few trace fossils; both abundance and diversity are low. Conversely, Holocene floodplain sediments locally contain abundant and diverse lebensspuren mostly produced by insects, spiders, nematodes, annelids and molluscs. At least 8 insect orders and 31 families include species that burrow in floodplain sediments and yet none of their lebensspuren are unique to this environment. Taxonomically dissimilar insects produce morphologically similar lebensspuren, and the same species, or individual, may produce very dissimilar lebensspuren. Thus, identification of tracemakers for rocks of floodplain origin is as difficult as for marine rocks. Trace …

Golofa tersander is a sexually dimorphic species with males possessing a long, slender horn arising from the frons, a distinct pronotal tubercle anteriorly, a strongly convex pygidium, and an apically emarginate last sternite. Females, on the other hand, have only a tubercle on the frons, lack a pronotal tubercle, possess a relatively flat pygidium, and the last sternite is entire apically. Both of the specimens described here exhibit all of these external male character states just mentioned.

Fourteen genera and 113 species are found in the Neotropical region. Knowledge of the tribe in the Neotropics is fragmentary, necessitating further studies that address taxonomy, biology, and geographical distribution patterns. ABSTRACT-The distinctive trace fossil Chubutolithes gaimanensis n. ichnosp. occurs in Casamayoran (early Eocene) and Colhuehaupian (late Oligocene) alluvial rocks of the Sarmiento Formation in eastern Chubut Province, Argentina. Though known for nearly 70 years, its origin has remained obscure. Examination of new specimens and comparisons with modem analogs demonstrate that specimens of Chubutolithes represent the fossil nests of a mud-dauber (Hymenoptera: Sphecidae). Virtually identical nests are constructed today by mud-daubers in areas as disparate as southern Santa Cruz Province, Argentina, and Nebraska, confirming that quite similar trace fossils can be produced by several different taxa in a higher taxonomic clade. …

During the past several years a number of new taxa of Dynastinae have been described which we feel are synonymical with existing taxa. We have also accumulated a small number of new distributional records in the Pentodontini and Oryctini. In this paper we clarify some of these taxonomic "loose ends" by proposing several new synonyms and two new combinations. Dechambre examined the type of Heterogomphus niger Endrodi, and Ratcliffe examined the types of the three Endrodi species of Strategus and Endroedianibe bozzolai Chalumeau. We also list the new distributional records we have found.

The principal plant biomes in Nebraska are briefly reviewed. The relationships of insects, particularly scarab beetles and butterflies, to these biomes are discussed, especially as it relates to their distributions. Human-induced alteration of habitat has significantly influenced the present distributions of both plants and insects relative to their historical distributions at the time of Euro-american colonization of Nebraska in the mid-1800s. Eight species are described as new: S. atlanticus, S. caymani, S. craigi, S. hipposiderus, S. howdeni, S. longichomperus, S. symphenax, and S. tarquinius; 12 new junior synonyms are established (including the rejection of six previously valid species); one species is raised from synonymy; and two new replacement names are proposed.
