The Floral Hosts And Distribution Of A Supposed Creosote Bush Specialist, Colletes Stehpeni Timberlake (Hymenoptera: Colletidae), Rebekah Andrus Nelson, Terry Griswold

An

Colletes stehpani Timberlake is thought to be a narrow oligolege of creosote bush, Larrea tridentata (DC.) Coville (Zygophyllaceae) with limited distribution in the Sonoran desert of the Western United States. Based on appraisal of a museum specimens and fieldsurveys from 1999 to 2001 on 21 sand dunes, we foundd C. stephani to be a much more widely distributed psammophile of theSonoran, Mojave, and Great Basin Deserts that utilizes two unrelated plant pollen scources,Larrea Cav. and Psorothamnus Rydb. (Fabaceae). The geologic history of the region suggests a potential host shift from the more ancient occupant, Psorothamnus, to the Neogene colonizer, Larrea.

Protecting Honey Bees From Pesticides, U.S. Department Of Agriculture Mar 1967

Protecting Honey Bees From Pesticides, U.S. Department Of Agriculture

An

Honey bees frequently are in danger of being killed when crops are treated with pesticides. Honey bees produce honey and beeswax valued at $55 million annually; but even more significant, the annual value of crops that require bee pollination exceeds $1 billion. For this reason, farmers and beekeepers should cooperate in protecting the bees from pesticides. Observance of precautions recommended in this publication can significantly reduce bee losses from pesticide poisoning.

Zum Problem Der Bienenzelle, Ludwig Armbruster

An

Halictinae De Cuba, Carl F. Baker Jan 1919

Halictinae De Cuba, Carl F. Baker

An

Parnassius Apollo In Bayern Und Einigen Grenzbezirken, Max Bachmann Dec 1915

Parnassius Apollo In Bayern Und Einigen Grenzbezirken, Max Bachmann

An

Problem Des Hummelstaates, Ludwig Armbruster Nov 1914

Problem Des Hummelstaates, Ludwig Armbruster

An

Les Bourdons De La Belgique, F. J. Ball

An

Notes On The Eastern Species Of Cerceris (Hym. Philanthidae), Nathan Banks

An

The species of Cerceris are among the prettiest of our entomophilous wasps; usually black, with bands and spots of yellow, of the general appearance of many species of Crabro. They are most abundant on flowers in July, some occur in June, and others as late as October. They are not especially shy, so are readily taken in the net.

I make a new name for our species without hairs on the metanotum, not knowing whether it will include the typical Ageuia or not. The type of Melanaporus Ashm. is a two-celled form of P. argenteus or a close ally.

Studies In Oxybelidae I, Carl F. Baker Jun 1909

Studies In Oxybelidae I, Carl F. Baker

An

Having been engaged for many years in the collection and study of material in this family, such results as have been obtained will now be published from time to time. A provisional table of the genera is presented herewith. Dr. Brauns has kindly sent a specimen of his South African Oxybelomorpha. It is evidently closely related to Oxybelus, but possesses mandibles deeply emarginate below. The sub-median cell is much shorter than the median, the transverse median nervure uniting with the median much before the origin of the larval nervure; but this condition occurs also among some of our American Oxybelus. …

Hymenoptera The Bee Genus Pasiphae In North America, Carl F. Baker May 1906

Hymenoptera The Bee Genus Pasiphae In North America, Carl F. Baker

An

While in Central America I collected a number of species of Prosopis (descriptions to appear soon) which were typical representatives of that genus in every way. Scattered through this collection were a number of bees, very Prosopis-like, but possessing a truncated and appendiculated marginal cell and otherwise corresponding to Ashmead 's description of the genus Pasiphae, previously known only from the southern Andean region. In Trans. Am. Ent. Soc. XXIX, p. 186, Cockerell says "Mr. Vachal remarks that this has a distinct tibial pollen brush,. and cannot go with the Prosopidae. It appears to be a Colletid with only two …

Additions To The Recorded Hymenopterous Fauna Of The Phillipine Islands, With Descriptions Of New Species, William H. Ashmead

An

In my previous papers on the Hymenoptera fauna of the Philipines Islands, I find that I overlooked many species recorded from the archipelago. Below, therefore, I give a list of these omissions and follow with descriptions of two ne wgenera and twenty-eight new species received recently from Father Robert Brown, S.J., of the Phillipine Weather Bureau, Manila, Prof. Charles S. Banks, of the Governement Laboratories, Manila, and Dr. E. A. Mearns, U.S.A.

Descriptions Of Two New Hymenoptera From Japan - I, William H. Ashmead

An

For several years past I have been classifying, arranging and determining the Japanese Hymenoptera in the National Museum, presented by several valued correspondents, among whom special mention should be made of Dr. Mitsukuri, of Tokyo, Mr. Y. Nawa, of Gifu, Dr. Matsumura, of Sapporo, and Mr. A. Koebele, now government entomologist of the Hawaiian Islands, whose contributions are of especial value and contain many new species, particularly among the parasitic families. The new species in the superfamilies Sphecoidea, Vespoidea, Proctotrypoidea, Cynipoidea and Chalcidoidea are treated here. Those in the Ichneumonoidea and other superfamilies will be described in another paper.

A List Of The Hymenoptera Of The Phillipine Islands, With Descriptions Of New Species, William H. Ashmead

An

Considering the extent of the Philippine Islands, extending as they do over 1,200 miles of territory, our knowledge of the Hymenopterous fauna is singularly meager. More attention should be given to collecting these important insects. Since the islands came into the possession of the United States much material has been sent to the National Museum, and with the hope that more attention will be given to the collecting and study of this order in the Philippines, I give be-low a list of the known species, and describe most of the new species now in our collection.

Descriptions Of New Genera And Species Of Hymenoptera From The Phillipine Islands, William H. Ashmead

An

In a paper entitled A List of the Hymenoptera of the Phillipine Islands, with descriptions of New Species, I recorded 183 species of these insects from the Phillipines, although several doubtful species mentioned by Fr. Castro de Elera in his Catalogo de todo la Fauna Fillipinas were cited but not included in this number. Two genera and thirty-one species were described as new to science in this first paper.

Classification Of The Fossorial, Predateous And Parasitic Wasps, Or The Superfamily Vespoidea No.17, William H. Ashmead

An

This tribe, to the initiated, is readily distinguished by the eyes, which are usually quite differently shaped, rarely smooth and shining, and always distinctly facetted, although a few females have small ellipsoidal or somewhat rounded eyes, as in the tribes Photopsidini and Sphaerophthalmini, and therefore, if the greatest care is not given to other characters, could be confused with certain genera in those tribes.
