Draize: A Blueprint For Change, Henry Spira Aug 1979

Draize: A Blueprint For Change, Henry Spira

Draize Test Campaign

As coordinator, I prepared the following pages for the campaign to abolish the Draize rabbit blinding test. The plan includes background information, short and long range goals and step by step initiatives. This working blueprint was circulated to individuals and organizations interested in supporting the campaign. And we made a point of sharing copies of our plan with the cosmetics industry and any interested observers. It has always been our policy to have an up-front, open agenda.

The Effect Of Escherichia Coli Endotoxin On The Cat Periapical Tissues, Thomas G. Dwyer Jun 1979

The Effect Of Escherichia Coli Endotoxin On The Cat Periapical Tissues, Thomas G. Dwyer

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The periapical tissue reaction to three concentrations of endotoxin solutions and to a sterile saline control solution was examined in six adult cats. The maxillary and mandibular cuspids were isolated and the pulps extirpated with barbed broaches. The four solutions (1, 10, 100 μg/ml endotoxin, and saline) were then injected into the four prepared teeth for each cat and the access cavities sealed with IRM.

At two week intervals, two cats were sacrificed and the specimens removed, while the remaining animals were retreated as previously described. The block tissue sections were radiographed, fixed in 10% buffered formalin, and prepared for …

Concomitant Infections With The Parasites Trypanosoma Musculi Kendall, 1906 And Trichinella Spiralis (Owen, 1835) Raillet, 1896 In The Laboratory Mouse, Musmusculus, Joan Chew Liang Tan Jun 1979

Concomitant Infections With The Parasites Trypanosoma Musculi Kendall, 1906 And Trichinella Spiralis (Owen, 1835) Raillet, 1896 In The Laboratory Mouse, Musmusculus, Joan Chew Liang Tan

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Four groups of female Swiss Webster mice were injected intraperitoneally with similar volumes of normal saline, sonicated Trypanosoma musculi and saline, sonicated trypanosomes and Freund's Complete Adjuvant (FCA) and FCA. When the mice became immune and thus responded negatively to a T. musculi challenge, sera were collected and administered to four other groups of mice to establish passive immunity in these animals.

An established dose of innoculum of Trichinella spiralis larvae (8.1 larvae/gram of body weight) was given to all the mice by gastric gavage. These mice were killed 26 days later and the musculature digested with artificial gastric juice …

Cell Mediated Immunity By Cytotoxicity Assay And The Effect Of Corynebacterium Parvum And Radiation On Mice Bearing Herpes-Induced Tumors, Robert B. Stagg May 1979

Cell Mediated Immunity By Cytotoxicity Assay And The Effect Of Corynebacterium Parvum And Radiation On Mice Bearing Herpes-Induced Tumors, Robert B. Stagg

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Cell mediated immune (CMI) cytotoxic reactivity of Balb/c mice against H238 cells, a Herpes simplex virus (HSV) Type 2 - induced sarcoma, was measured by the 125IUdR release assay. The Balb/c mouse response to the growing HSV-induced tumor, treated with radiation and , was measured by survival rate, tumor growth and immune cytotoxicity of spleen and peritoneal exudate cells (PEC) as determined by 125IUdR release assay. Subcutaneous (s.c.) inoculation of 1 x 106 H238 cells (high dose) produced progressive tumor growth while s.c. inoculation of 1 x 104 H238 cells (low dose) produced no tumors. A …

Metcalf-Hatch Fact Sheet, Henry Spira

Metcalf-Hatch Campaign

The Metcalf-Hatch Act forces tax supported pounds and shelters to turn over unwanted cats and dogs to New York laboratories. This creates difficulties for shelters/pounds. People who are aware of Metcalf-Hatch (MH) will tend to abandon animals rather than risk having them recycled into labs. And this places additional tax burdens on communities for rounding up abandoned strays. The cost of stray animals is already $400 million a year in the USA.

Alternatives To Laboratory Animals: Definition And Discussion, Andrew N. Rowan Jan 1979

Alternatives To Laboratory Animals: Definition And Discussion, Andrew N. Rowan

The Institute for the Study of Animal Problems [ISAP]

The origins of the concept of "alternatives" to the use of animals in research may be traced back to the 1800's and the furore about using live animals in surgical and other experiments. Some of the animal protection societies in England were prepared to accept animal experimentation provided it was performed under anesthesia. Even Dr. Marshall Hall, who championed the spread of experimental medicine in 19th century England, considered it necessary to control and prevent unwarranted, inept and cruel experimentation (French, 1975). The concept of alternatives has developed in the 20th century to encompass not only the reduction (prevention) of …
