Effects Of No-Tillage Fallow As Compared To Conventional Tillage In A Wheat-Fallow System, C. R. Fenster, G. A. Peterson Oct 1979

Effects Of No-Tillage Fallow As Compared To Conventional Tillage In A Wheat-Fallow System, C. R. Fenster, G. A. Peterson

Historical Research Bulletins of the Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station

The benefits of reducing tillage by use of herbicides for weed control emphasizes why research was started to study a fallow system where all tillage was replaced by herbicides. Wheat planting was then the only soil disturbing operation. Objectives of the research were to compare the effects of no-tillage (chemical), stubble-mulch and plow (bare fallow) systems of fallow on: 1. Grain yield. 2. Grain protein. 3. Residue retention. 4. Soil nitrate-nitrogen accumulation. 5. Soil water accumulations during fallow. Data presented are in the form of a progress report. These experiments will continue.

Results Of The Ninth International Winter Wheat Performance Nursery Grown In 1977, S. L. Kuhr, K. D. Wilhelmi, V. A. Johnson, P. J. Mattern, J. W. Schmidt

Historical Research Bulletins of the Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station

This is the ninth report of results from an International Winter Wheat Performance Nursery (IWWPN) organized in 1968 by the Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station and the Science and Education Administration (SEA), U.S. Department of Agriculture, under a contract with the Agency for International Development, U.S. Department of State. The Nursery was designed to (1) test the adaptation and stability of winter wheat cultivars in a range of latitudes, daylengths, fertility conditions, water management regimes, and disease complexes; (2) identify superior winter cultivars to serve as recipient genotypes for high protein and high lysine genes, (3) test the degree of expression …

Simulation Studies Of Corn Hybrid-Climate Response In Nebraska, R. E. Neild, N. H. Richman

Historical Research Bulletins of the Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station

Crop development models can be used to determine the expected phenological responses of corn hybrids to different planting dates and locations. The number of days from planting to maturity for a particular hybrid varies considerably between different dates of planting at a single location and between locations at the same planting date.

Effect Of Lime On No-Tillage Corn Yields, Robert L. Blevins, Lloyd W. Murdock Feb 1979

Effect Of Lime On No-Tillage Corn Yields, Robert L. Blevins, Lloyd W. Murdock

Agronomy Notes

The rapidly growing popularity and adoption of no-tillage systems of corn production have required us to re-evaluate some of our long established soil fertility practices and recommendations. Recent work by researchers at Kentucky and adjacent states show that the soil surface becomes very acid after a few years of continuous no-tillage corn production. This rapid decrease in soil pH is primarily associated with surface application of nitrogen fertilizers. Most lime recommendations and related research information for row crop production are based on plow-down application. Therefore, the effectiveness of surface-applied and unincorporated lime under no-tillage systems becomes a question of concern. …

Soybean Inoculant Quality, J. L. Sims, E. C. Lacefield, Lloyd W. Murdock Feb 1979

Soybean Inoculant Quality, J. L. Sims, E. C. Lacefield, Lloyd W. Murdock

Agronomy Notes

Research studies have shown that from 40 to 80 percent of the nitrogen required for a soybean crop comes from nitrogen fixed in the nodules, depending on the degree of nodulation and the level of soil nitrogen. Hence, it is important that soybean plants be well-nodulated for most efficient soybean production.

Removal Of Raw Peanut Flavor And Odor In Peanut Flour Processed By Direct Solvent Extraction1, Lawrence A. Johnson, J. T. Farnsworth, R. J. Garland, E. W. Lusas Jan 1979

Removal Of Raw Peanut Flavor And Odor In Peanut Flour Processed By Direct Solvent Extraction1, Lawrence A. Johnson, J. T. Farnsworth, R. J. Garland, E. W. Lusas

Lawrence A. Johnson

Peanut slices can be directly extracted with hexane yielding more soluble protein and better color than pre-press solvent extraction; however, flavor and odor are characterized as raw and “green beany”. The utilization of secondary extraction with hexane: ethanol azeotrope, hexane: methanol azeotrope and absolute ethanol subsequent to hexane extraction significantly improved flavor and odor characteristics of peanut flour. Hexane: propanol azeotrope did not significantly improve sensory evaluations. Hexane: ethanol azeotrope did not reduce soluble protein, yielding an NSI value of 95%. Hexane: methanol azeotrope and absolute ethanol slightly reduced NSI to 88% and 92% respectively. Color of peanut flour was …

B753: The Uptake Of Nutrients By Katahdin Potatoes As Influenced By Soil Moisture Regimes And Rates Of Fertilization, Gurbachan Singh Kalra, Roland A. Struchtemeyer Jan 1979

B753: The Uptake Of Nutrients By Katahdin Potatoes As Influenced By Soil Moisture Regimes And Rates Of Fertilization, Gurbachan Singh Kalra, Roland A. Struchtemeyer

Bulletins

In Aroostook County, Maine, where the annual average rainfall is 35-40 inches, it is generalized by many that moisture is not a limiting factor in potato production. Weather data for Aroostook do, however, show frequent periods of low rainfall during the growing season, and these periods do cause temporary moisture deficiencies in the crop. Struchtemeyer, based on irrigation research in Maine, showed that the potato plant needs approximately 1 inch of water per week during the growing season. From the 1936 to 1955 Maine Weather Records, Pullen and Schrumpf (23) found that about 70 percent of the time, less than …

Calibration Of Boom Sprays, J R. Peirce Jan 1979

Calibration Of Boom Sprays, J R. Peirce

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Boom sprays have become increasingly common on Western Australian farms, allowing farmers to take advantage of modern herbicided.

Most boom sprays used on farms have 50 cm nozzle spacings and require calibrating regularily to ensure accurate herbicide application.

By following these steps, the boom will deliver accurate amounts of herbicide.

Options For Machinery And Labour, A F. Herbert

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Machinery is one of the highest costs in farming today. It is not unusual for capital investment in machinery to be 20 to 30 percent of the total investment in the farm.

On an annual basis, expenditure directly attributable to machinery can be 40 per cent or more.

This article cannon be a panacea for everyone to reduce machinery costs - each farm is different. But some of the issues might be of help.

Experimental Summaries - Plant Research

COMMENTS 1. No insect problems experienced and broadleaf weeds effectively controlled by spraying. Septoria· leaf spot incidence insufficient to affect yields. 2. Little effect of time of planting on either total dry matter or grain yield. Crop received about 70% of the average May-October rainfall with a very dry September-October. Perhaps the distribution of rainfall allowed a similar pattern of water use, and total water use by each planting time. 3. There is probably a significant effect of Nitrogen regime on grain yield. Osmocote (N3) consistently yielded more than either single (N1) or repeated (N2) dressings of Agran 34:0. The …

Determination Of Strategy For Harvesting Burley Tobacco, Yasuhiko Miyake, Larry G. Wells, George A. Duncan, Jimmie Rankin Jan 1979

Determination Of Strategy For Harvesting Burley Tobacco, Yasuhiko Miyake, Larry G. Wells, George A. Duncan, Jimmie Rankin

Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications

The decision-making process associated with the scheduling of burley tobacco harvesting operations was formulated as a multi-stage decision process, and solved using a procedure called dynamic programming. The solution of a stochastic dynamic programming model provides a set of optimal decision rules, that is, a strategy. When certain user-specified parameters are provided, the decision model provides information concerning the optimal date to start harvesting, the optimal number of hours to harvest on each day, the optimal date to introduce hired labor, and the optimal number of workers which should be hired.

The solution of the dynamic programming model makes it …
