Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Food safety is an important public health issue. Product recalls are an important part of the overall food safety system and occur when potentially unsafe products enter the marketplace. However, it is important that information about the recall ultimately reaches the public. This research assesses the publicity that recalls receive by the popular media. The focus is specifically on recalls of meat and poultry products. Publicity is measured by coverage in the AP Newswire. Data were gathered from the United States Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) and cover meat and poultry recalls from 1982 to 2009. …

Business people who want to make a living related to food, and public and …

Purchaser Preferences On Carbon Labels: Conventional Vs. Organic Milk, Mustafa Ozkan Aug 2011

Purchaser Preferences On Carbon Labels: Conventional Vs. Organic Milk, Mustafa Ozkan

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Over the past several years, there has been growing attention concerning global warming/climate change and how humans are contributors. It is known that agricultural production is a main contributor of greenhouse gas emissions and the livestock sector is particularly significant because it is quoted as having between 3 and 18% of greenhouse gas emissions measured in CO2 equivalent pending different assumptions. Due to this, carbon footprint labeling has been described as a potential tool to inform consumers about greenhouse gases associated with food products and assist them with the necessary information to purchase products that help reduce greenhouse gas emissions. …

The Seed And Agricultural Biotechnology Industries In India: An Analysis Of Industry Structure, Competition, And Policy Options, David J. Spielman, Deepthi Kolady, Anthony Cavalieri, N. Chandrasekhara Rao

Deepthi Kolady

Since the late 1980s, technological advances and policy reforms have opened up new opportunities for growth in India’s seed and agricultural biotechnology industries. The impacts of such changes have been significant in India’s cotton sector, but less so for the country’s main cereal crops, where both yield and output growth rates have been relatively stagnant.
Some public policymakers and corporate decision makers are confident that the private sector will help reverse these trends, arguing that the right combination of new technological solutions and progressive policy reforms will unleash a significant increase in private investment in productivity enhancing products and services. …

Evaluating The Impacts Of Production Process And Product Origin On Willingness To Pay For Shrimp, Addison Ellis May 2011

Evaluating The Impacts Of Production Process And Product Origin On Willingness To Pay For Shrimp, Addison Ellis

All Theses

The 2002 Farm Bill included a provision requiring various agricultural commodities to comply with country of origin labeling (COOL). Proponents of COOL argued that the policy would support U.S. producers and benefit U.S. consumers. This argument was based on the assumption that U.S. consumers prefer domestic products to imported products and hence the demand for U.S. products would increase following the implementation of COOL. However, analyzing the impact of COOL on shrimp, one of the first commodities covered the program, is complicated by recent trade disputes, concerns over the safety of farm raised products and potential stigma effects associated with …

Back To The Basics: What Does The Market Tell Us About Harvest Grain Basis, Matthew Fischer May 2011

Back To The Basics: What Does The Market Tell Us About Harvest Grain Basis, Matthew Fischer

All Theses

Grain marketing in the United States is a complex system; therefore producers require information on grain markets to effectively manage risk. Futures markets provide the mechanism for price risk management based on the national supply and demand signals. However price risk is managed on the local level, therefore the relationship between local cash price and futures price, basis, must be understood.
The market forces which explain grain basis are the cost of storage and the transportation cost. The current body of research in grain basis uses the storage component of basis as the driving force. This approach is applicable to …

Climate Change And Idaho Agriculture: Is Farm Size A Determinate Of Adaptive Capacity?, Blair P. Vanderlugt

McNair Scholars Research Journal

Determining how agriculture will be affected by climate change is not only a question biophysical change in crop production; it also depends on the adaptation of the farmer to these changing conditions. A flaw in models using nationally aggregated cross sectional data is that the adaptive capacity of unique farms is not captured in the analysis. In order to understand the local effect of climate change on welfare models must capture attributes specific to the study area. Factors that must be taken into consideration include farm characteristics local policy and institutional frameworks (Antle et al. 2004; Mendelsohn, Nordhaus, and Shaw …

Spring Wheat Planting Date Report, Heather Darby, Rosalie Madden, Erica Cummings, Hannah Harwood, Amanda Gervais Jan 2011

Spring Wheat Planting Date Report, Heather Darby, Rosalie Madden, Erica Cummings, Hannah Harwood, Amanda Gervais

Northwest Crops & Soils Program

The localvore movement has revived otherwise historical crops in Vermont, including small-scale grain production. As the demand for local organic wheat has risen over the last few years, University of Vermont Extension has developing best agronomic practices for wheat production in a Northeastern climate. In an organic system, weed management can be one of the biggest challenges. One strategy to manage weeds is to modify planting dates. Early planting dates can establish a crop prior to weed flushes while a late planted crop can help avoid some weed species. Planting date can also have an overall impact on both grain …

Cover Crop Planting Date Trial, Heather Darby, Chantel Cline, Erica Cummings, Rosalie Madden, Hannah Harwood Jan 2011

Cover Crop Planting Date Trial, Heather Darby, Chantel Cline, Erica Cummings, Rosalie Madden, Hannah Harwood

Northwest Crops & Soils Program

When corn silage is harvested, the entire plant is removed, leaving the soil exposed throughout the winter. Many farmers have started planting cover crops following corn harvest because of increased soil health and fertility. The cover crop protects the soil from erosion and adds organic matter, it also scavenges excess soil nitrogen (N), releasing it again after being terminated in the spring. This keeps the nitrogen from potentially being lost through leaching and brings farmers financial benefits as less nitrogen loss means less fertilizer is needed in the spring. Farmers have asked about best methods for growing cover crops to …

Sunflower Seeding Rate X Nitrogen Rate Trial, Heather Darby, Hannah Harwood, Erica Cummings, Rosalie Madden, Susan Monahan, Amanda Gervais Jan 2011

Sunflower Seeding Rate X Nitrogen Rate Trial, Heather Darby, Hannah Harwood, Erica Cummings, Rosalie Madden, Susan Monahan, Amanda Gervais

Northwest Crops & Soils Program

Because the majority of sunflowers in the United States are grown in the Great Plains, recommendations for plant populations and fertilization rates are limited to this specific region and climate. Due to the temperate climate of the northeast, it is likely that optimal seeding rates and nitrogen (N) rates for sunflower production will differ from the Great Plains. A crop’s N requirements are often linked to population; this study attempts to evaluate the impact of both seeding rates and N rates on sunflower yield and quality.
