Although the US has set aside almost 90 million acres for 492 wildlife refuges, 34 million acres of national forests for wilderness, and 74.2 million acres for national parks, traditional methods by which such lands are managed do not sufficiently protect their natural values. As there is no requirement to coordinate management across enclave boundaries, the boundary and not the resource has determined management focus. These methods of reserve land management should be supplemented by a more ecologically sound, resource-based management approach. New legislative and coordinated management regimes are recommended.
