The Effectiveness Of Canines In Law Enforcement, Shelly Stroud, Riley Kaufmann
Scholar Week 2016 - present
Police K-9s play a multifaceted role in policing including crime control and public relations. The advent of these police specialty units coincided with the movement to professionalize policing and have been used to aid law enforcement since the start of the 20th century.
We will demonstrate the role of a working K-9 and the many different areas that are covered in law enforcement such as: bite, detection, narcotics, firearms, explosives, and technology. We will examine the role of the K-9 handler and the impact of their relationship with their k-9 and how this bond influences the effectiveness of law enforcement tasks.

Forgoing The "Rule Of Five" : Fair Use Analysis In Interlibrary Loan And Collection Development, Linda Sizemore, Ashley Cole
OVGTSL 2023: Ongoing Challenges, Creative Solutions
Are you being bogged down by copyright? Are you getting all the access you deserve? Eastern Kentucky University Libraries recently developed and implemented a new copyright policy for interlibrary loan that forgoes the outdated CONTU Guidelines or "Rule of Five" to more closely comply with Copyright Law and leverage Fair Use.
In this session, the presenters will discuss the inspiration behind abandoning CONTU, the process for obtaining approval from library and university stakeholders, and the impact of a new copyright policy on interlibrary loan workflows and collection development decisions. Participants will also engage in a discussion of the opportunities and …
Leadership Education And Otherism, Jim Mohr, Kristine Hoover
Leadership Education And Otherism, Jim Mohr, Kristine Hoover
International Conference on Hate Studies
Othering is often an overlooked ethical and theoretical issue in the field of Leadership Studies. The need for greater inclusion in our organizations and in our communities is more important than ever given the structural disparities in access to health care and education, in criminal justice sentencing, and in fulfillment of leadership roles themselves. People in positions of power have a responsibility to understand othering processes and their impacts in organizations (Palfreyman, 2005). Leadership education can help to form leaders who are more aware of the importance of the quality of their relationships with the Other, grounded in values of …

Bias Against Asians, Black People, Hispanics/Latines, Jews, And Muslims On Twitter In 2020 And 2021, Gunther Jikeli
International Conference on Hate Studies
Hate speech on social media has been identified as a social problem. However, it is difficult to quantify how widespread hate speech is. We looked at conversations on Twitter about Asians, Black people, Jews, Hispanic/Latino people, and Muslims by manually annotating representative samples of tweets from 2020 and 2021 with the keywords “Asians, Blacks, Jews, Latinos, and Muslims.”
We found between 5 and 17 percent tweets were biased, depending on the keyword and year. This results in an estimated 8.3 million biased tweets during that period. However, there were even more tweets calling out bias against these minority groups, between …

The Proud Boys Raging Righteously At The U.S. Capitol On January 6th, 2021: A Hate Group In Action, Daniel Rothbart
International Conference on Hate Studies
Righteous rage constitutes an expression of political power for many hate groups operating currently in the United States, enticing them toward emotionally charged aggression against their adversaries. We offer a case study of one such group—the Proud Boys—in the context of their violent attack of the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021. Rather than a momentary feeling, their righteous rage is a potent force for forming, defining, and organizing their mission to overpower their adversaries. In particular, their righteous rage is defined by (a) behavioral manifestations, (b) the emotional contagious impact of such manifestations, and (c) the centrality of raging …

Cpa – Performed Election Audits: What They Are, Why They Are Coming, And How To Prepare For Them, William Kresse Jd
Research Days
My recent nationwide survey of 1,680 potential American voters shows that over two-thirds would have greater confidence in elections, and that over 40% would vote more frequently, if post-election audits were routinely conducted by independent CPAs credentialed for election auditing. Low voter confidence in American elections has triggered professional groups and state legislators to call for post-election audits. But who should conduct these audits? Post-election audits conducted by election administrators raises the issue of information asymmetry. My research explores whether having routine post-election audits conducted by independent Certified Public Accountants further credentialed for election auditing (“CPA Audits”) would affect the …

Clippers & Cops And Go Pro In Life, Tyrone J. Dennis
National Youth Advocacy and Resilience Conference
Clippers and cops is an organization I (Detective Tyrone Dennis) started in March of 2018 where APD officers actually go into our own communities to speak to civilians about our own experiences; good and bad.
Meeting at local barber shops, Rec centers, to local restaurants, “Clippers and cops” is a relaxed round table discussion that gives every day people a neutral and safe platform for their voices to be heard without judgement, And a place to have an open dialogue about the adversity and hot button issues that have caused such disparity between these 2 conflicting worlds.
Today young people …

Asset Based Community Development: A Journey To Meeting The Needs Of The Whole Child., Beth Bradley Penley, Victor Morales
National Youth Advocacy and Resilience Conference
This program will tell the story about one school district's journey to meeting the needs of the whole child. A shift in school culture from a reactive to a proactive purpose shaped the mindset of staff as they embarked in partnering with the local community to build a resource network to meet the needs of the students in which they serve. In addition to building community partnerships, the components of a successful intervention continuum are discussed including Positive Behavior Intervention and Support, Community in Schools, and the American School Counseling Association Model.

The Effects Of Work-Family Conflict On The Career Of Police Officers, Melvina Calvin-Edwards
The Effects Of Work-Family Conflict On The Career Of Police Officers, Melvina Calvin-Edwards
Scholar Week 2016 - present
Work-family conflict can cause conflict for police officers due to stress and danger on the job. Stress from home can make work difficult and work-place stress can affect life at home. Three forms of work-family conflict (time-based, strain based, and behavior-based conflict) were examined. This quantitative study examined how work-family conflict affects job satisfaction, intention to stay employed in the field of law enforcement, and whether there was a difference in work-family conflict between male and female police officers. Data were collected from 178 (n=178) full- time, sworn police officers in the law enforcement field. Data analysis included Pearson Correlation …

Stonewall To The Present: An Analysis Of The Lgbt Rights Movement And U.S. Public Policy, Jake Mericle
Capstone Showcase
The LGBT Rights Movement has been one of the most influential social movements in recent decades. The aim of this paper is to determine the extent to which the LGBT rights movement has affected U.S. law and policy. In order to study this, I employ a process tracing method to study the movement as a whole over the past few decades from Stonewall to the present. I begin with the Stonewall Riots of 1969 as they are largely considered to be the start of the modern LGBT rights movement. My analysis focuses on the power and the importance of the …

Conflict In Kashmir, Matthew Atkison '22, Sarah Oquendo '22, Manaal Shamsi '22
Student Leadership Exchange (SLX)
The topic we are discussing in our presentation is the controversy of Kashmir. Kashmir is a region that has recently been in a territorial dispute between India and Pakistan due to it being between the two nations and it having access to an abundant supply of resources. Kashmir has basically been blocked off by the rest of the world and because of this, many protests have sprung in the region, often violent ones with students throwing rocks at officers. Nothing has been done to solve the situation other than Pakistan and India pointing the blame to each other. Many have …
Cultural Diversity Awareness: Perceptions Of Community Residents And Police Personnel, Vickie Minnifield Greene
Cultural Diversity Awareness: Perceptions Of Community Residents And Police Personnel, Vickie Minnifield Greene
Scholar Week 2016 - present
This study examined the difference in self-reported perceptions of cultural diversity awareness between two specific groups, community residents and police personnel, within a Midwestern city’s community and police department. This study also measured how their attitudes related to their likelihood to assist in enhancing the goals of community policing, which includes the prevention of crime. Literature cited demonstrates that social injustice toward African Americans and Latinos, cultural diversity ignorance, miscommunication, and lack of trust between community residents and police personnel are indicators that their relationships require positive solutions toward repairing a historically strained relationship. The Miami University Diversity Awareness Scale …
Multigenerational Perceptions Of The Law Enforcement Work Environment, William K. Akin
Multigenerational Perceptions Of The Law Enforcement Work Environment, William K. Akin
Scholar Week 2016 - present
Leaders struggle to address shifting characteristics between generational cohorts in a multigenerational workforce. Research has shown that law enforcement culture supports an antiquated approach to leadership and that popular generational stereotypes are not consistent with behaviors in the workplace. This research was designed to help the law enforcement community understand generational values, beliefs, and work ethics, and to recommend ways to reduce generational stereotypes, address employee shortages, and improve the overall connection to their communities. The Copenhagen Psychosocial Questionnaire II was used in an online survey to anonymously collect data from 441 law enforcement participants within the Baby Boomer, Generation …

Weight Stigma In Different Aspects Of Life, Emanuel Noyola
Weight Stigma In Different Aspects Of Life, Emanuel Noyola
Capstone Showcase
Weight stigma is discrimination or bias against any individual who is perceived to be overweight or obese. It has recently been recorded that the effects of weight discrimination have an influence on three major areas of life which include schools, the workplace, and personal relationships. This is important as weight discrimination was found to mostly have negative effects in all these areas but was also found to be sometimes beneficial in others, such as retail. Past research has also shown that the effects of weight discrimination are 37 times worse among obese females compared to obese males. One alarming setting …
International Policy And Climate Change-Induced Displacement Of South Pacific Island Nation Populations, Karissa Noragon
International Policy And Climate Change-Induced Displacement Of South Pacific Island Nation Populations, Karissa Noragon
Capstone Showcase
Climate change has advanced significantly in the last few decades resulting in some of the predicted effects, such as sea level rise, to start to appear and to cause displacement, especially in more vulnerable, developing nations. Though current estimates have found that the majority of the displaced populations will be able to relocate within their country’s borders, there are some nations, such as many of the small island nations in the South Pacific, where internal relocation will not always be an option. The question that will be explored in this paper is, what are the limits to current international policy …

Exposing The Imposter: Imposter Syndrome & Legal Writing Faculty, Sara L. Ochs
Events at Dickinson Law
Legal academics often report crippling feelings of insecurity and inadequacy, symptoms of a widespread trend labeled as “imposter syndrome.” Experts have defined this phenomenon as a “deep and sometimes paralyzing belief that we have been given something we didn’t earn and don’t deserve and that at some point we’ll be exposed.” Given the evident hierarchies in legal academia, these feelings are especially prominent among legal writing faculty, and even more so among those in untenured positions. Using empirical data acquired from law professors, this presentation will analyze the prevalence and causes of imposter syndrome among legal writing faculty and will …

ABA Standard 303 requires that a law school offer a curriculum that requires each student to satisfactorily complete at least one professional responsibility course, one upper-level writing course, and one or more experiential course(s) totaling at least six credit hours. While the same class cannot count toward more than one of these requirements, Interpretation 303-1 allows one course to count as "either as an upper-class writing requirement or as a simulation course provided the course meets all of the requirements of both types of courses and the law school permits a student to use the course to satisfy only one …

The Traditional Legal Analysis, Research, And Writing Course: Does Subject Synthesis Serve Students Best?, Anna Hemingway, Sherri Keene
Events at Dickinson Law
Most law schools’ first-year curriculums include a course on legal analysis, research, and writing. At many law schools, the synthesis of these subjects into one course is considered the best way to teach first-year law students basic lawyering skills. Recently, however, law schools have begun to separate the topics into stand-alone courses. This presentation will review the different models law schools are currently using and will explore additional opportunities to remix the individual topics with other first-year courses.
