The Interdisciplinary Turn In Legal Education , Anthony D'Amato

The nature of law and legal practice is changing with the addition of interdisciplinary scholars to law-school faculties and interdisciplinary studies to the law curriculum. However, the accessibility of non-law disciplinarians in the rest of the university raises the question of the cost-effectiveness and opportunity costs of importing them directly into the law school. This Article criticizes the interdisciplinary turn on three grounds. First is the unlikelihood that the joint-degreed persons who join the law faculty will happen to be the ones that their colleagues will end up collaborating with. Internationalizing U.S. Legal Education: A Report On The Education Of Transnational Lawyers, Carole Silver

This article analyses the role of U.S. law schools in educating foreign lawyers and the increasingly competitive global market for graduate legal education. U.S. law schools have been at the forefront of this competition, but little has been reported about their graduate programs. This article presents original research on the programs and their students, drawn from interviews with directors of graduate programs at 35 U.S. law schools, information available on law school web sites about the programs, and interviews with graduates of U.S. graduate programs. The Case For American History In The Law-School Curriculum, Harold P. Southerland

This article argues for the teaching of American History throughout the first year of law school. I do not believe that students can fully understand the cases they are reading in other courses without a knowledge of environing context. Understanding American History -- which is many respects doesn't paint a flattering picture -- may also help students in making fundamental choices about what role they wish to play in their careers as lawyers. Observations On The Folly Of Using Student Evaluations Of College Teaching For Faculty Evaluation, Pay, And Retention Decisions And Its Implications For Academic Freedom, William Arthur Wines, Terence J. Lau

William & Mary Journal of Race, Gender, and Social Justice

Research on student teaching evaluations is vast. An examination of this research demonstrates wide disagreements but also substantial consensus of authority for the proposition that student evaluations should be used only with extreme care, if at all, in making personnel decisions. A number of reasons cause administrators to use teaching evaluations for personnel decisions. The literature, however, is virtually unanimous in its condemnation of norming student evaluations in order to rank classroom performances. Current cases on academic freedom indicate some retrenchment by the Circuits from broader pronouncements in earlier Supreme Court cases. This paper concludes that the use of non-validated …

This article will first examine why case reading and analysis is challenging to new law students. It will then introduce "schema" theory as it is understood in the field of cognitive psychology and explore how it applies to legal case analysis. Finally, this article will offer various suggestions about how we can enhance our students' analytical skills. By learning more about the science behind cognition and how it applies to our students, we can increase our students' understanding of the complex legal materials they read during their first year of law school.
