Alinsky's Prescription: Democracy Alongside Law, Barbara L. Bezdek

This Article examines the import of the life’s work of Saul Alinsky—arguably the most prominent founder of contemporary organizing—to the content and methodologies of today’s legal education. I review the community organizing theory and practice of Saul Alinsky for its synergies and lessons on two approaches by legal theorists and educators working in law schools today — “community lawyering” and “social justice”education. These approaches embrace the special responsibility of the legal profession for the quality of justice in society[1] by extending the traditional conceptions of lawyers’ relationships with clients in ways that are informed by the insights of community organizers, …

From Grimm To Glory: Simulated Oral Argument As A Component Of Legal Education's Signature Pedagogy, Lisa T. Mcelroy

The past two years have been a period of landmark transformation in legal education. With the issuance of the Carnegie and Best Practices for Legal Education Reports, law schools and law professors have revisited the essential process of analyzing and transforming legal pedagogy. This widespread reexamination of the law school curriculum has yielded two important changes in legal education; first, law schools-including those in the top tier-have begun radically to amend their curricular goals and structures; and, second, legal scholars have begun to turn their attention to the theory and implementation of better legal education. As Carnegie and Best Practices …

Not Just Key Numbers And Keywords Anymore: How User Interface Design Affects Legal Research, Julie M. Jones
Not Just Key Numbers And Keywords Anymore: How User Interface Design Affects Legal Research, Julie M. Jones
Cornell Law Faculty Publications
Legal research is one of the foundational skills for the practice of law. Yet law school graduates are frequently admitted to the bar without adequate competence in this area. Applying both information-foraging theory and current standards for optimal web design, Ms. Jones considers, through a heuristic analysis, whether the user interfaces of Westlaw and LexisNexis help or hinder the process of legal research and the development of effective research skills.

Western Europe: Last Holdout In The Worldwide Acceptance Of Clinical Legal Education, Richard J. Wilson
Western Europe: Last Holdout In The Worldwide Acceptance Of Clinical Legal Education, Richard J. Wilson
Articles in Law Reviews & Other Academic Journals
Clinical legal education has achieved widespread acceptance throughout the world, growing by leaps and bounds during recent decades in countries like Russia and China, and expanding rapidly in other areas of Eastern Europe, Latin America and Africa. It is, arguably, the most significant innovation in legal education since the “invention” of the Socratic-case method in the United States, at the turn of the 20th Century. There is, however, one geographic area where the philosophy and methodology of clinical legal education has been resisted. That area is Continental Western Europe (the UK has some clinics, though not widespread). This article examines …

Practice-Ready: A Law School Perspective On Bar Certification, Veryl Victoria Miles

Law schools play a critical role in the bar certification process. They certify that graduates have the character and fitness necessary to become members of the bar,and they verify that graduates have completed the schools’ academic requirements for graduation. Each of these certifications is much more than a mere check mark but rather an analysis of a complex set of factors. The certification of character and fitness is not a simple notice of the lack of negative information about the graduate. Law school determination of character and fitness is quite detailed. While all of the levels of that process are beyond …
Educating Lawyers For The Global Economy: National Challenges, Carole Silver
Educating Lawyers For The Global Economy: National Challenges, Carole Silver

This essay addresses the challenge of educating law students to work in an increasingly global context. For students enrolled in United States law school, insight into the ways in which globalization matters can be drawn from the structural approaches to globalization of US-based law firms. These firms pursue their international practices by integrating lawyers educated and licensed in the firm’s home country (the US) and in the host jurisdictions in which the firm has offices. As a result, the success of the firm in its international practice depends upon the ability of its lawyers to develop strong and effective cross-national …
