Liberating Lawyers: Diverging Parallels In Intruder In The Dust And To Kill A Mockingbird, Rob Atkinson

Professor Atkinson hopes William Faulkner’s Intruder in the Dust will replace Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird as our favorite story of lawyerly virtue. In both stories, a white male lawyer and his protégé try to free a black man falsely accused of a capital crime. But below these superficial similarities, Professor Atkinson finds fundamental differences. To Kill a Mockingbird, with its father-knows-best attorney, Atticus Finch, celebrates lawyerly paternalism; Intruder in the Dust, through its aristocratic black hero, Lucas Beauchamp, and his lay allies, challenges the rule of lawyers, if not law itself. This article identifies fourteen principles of which the first-time dean candidate should be mindful. The prescriptions are aspirational in nature, and the article suggests the reader engage in some introspection about which of the fourteen items are most applicable on a personal level.

Hong Kong must commit itself now to becoming one of the leaders in legal education in Asia and the world. To do so, it must dramatically rethink the structure, process and content of legal education. This will not be easy, but it is essential if Hong Kong is to continue to serve as one of the great centres of finance, trade and technology in the world and if it is to maintain and secure a position of leadership in 21st century China and the Pacific region.

Gilbert F. Casellas (L '77) is a lawyer and businessman. He is Chairman of OMNITRU, a Washington, D.C. area investment and consulting firm, a director of Prudential Financial, trustee of the University of Pennsylvania, and advisor to Toyota Motor North America and Comcast Corporation. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and the American Law Institute. From 1994 to 1998 he served as chair of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.

The Best And The Brightest?: Canadian Law School Admissions, Dawna Tong, W. Wesley Pue

This article assesses the admissions policies commonly employed by law faculties in common law Canada. These faculties rely heavily on admissions criteria and policies developed in the United States and, like their American counterparts, typically admit students on the basis of "index scores" produced by combining Law School Admissions Test (LSAT) performance with Undergraduate Grade Point Average (UGPA). The appropriateness of this American model to the Canadian context has never been rigorously assessed. This raises serious questions as to whether Canadian law school admissions policies serve either of their stated goals of finding the "best" students or of advancing social …
