This Bill of Particulars provides a window to some of the exciting changes at Indiana Law since the adoption of our Strategic Plan. The plan calls for Indiana Law to be a "highly visible and influential law school whose faculty, students, and graduates advance knowledge, justice, and the public good in the state, in the nation, and around the world." Howard Gittis (L '58) was a partner at Wolff Block Solis Cohen and later vice chairman and a close adviser to Ronald Perelman at MacAndrews & Forbes. He served on the Temple University Board of Trustees for 27 years, including six years as chair. He died in 2007.

Sarah Killgore Wertman was the first woman in the country to both graduate from law school and be admitted to the bar. Thus, she was Michigan's first woman lawyer in two senses: She was the first woman to graduate from the University of Michigan Law School, and the first woman admitted to the Michigan bar. Others preceded her in entering law school, graduating from law school, or being admitted to the bar, but she was the first to accomplish all three. Lash has been a good friend for many years, and it is a pleasure to have this opportunity to reflect about him. I well remember our first meeting, in the late 1970s. I first met Boris Bittker on January 21, 1977, in Miami. There are only a handful of people whom you remember first meeting. For me, Boris was one. For the past twenty or so years, I have been lucky enough to count him as a friend. He was always Boris to me, never Borie. I was a new friend – too much his junior to be so informal. Our phone would ring. "Mike, it's Borie," he would say. "Hello Boris!" I would respond.

Dick Wellman was my teacher, mentor, collaborator, colleague, and friend. My law school class at The University of Michigan Law School voted Dick the most enthusiastic member of the faculty, and he was that. Dick devoted his professional life to teaching and scholarship, as most law professors do, but he had another career: Dick was a key player in the Uniform Law Conference,' an organization dedicated to improving private law and promoting legislative uniformity among the states.2

This is not the first time I have spoken to honor Edwin S. Cohen. I spoke at two of his retirements – at least – and in the Rotunda at both his 75th and 80th birthday celebrations. It also raises questions about her work and that of anyone who tries to follow in her footsteps. Because I am one of those chasers after methodological Rose petals, I am (at least) doubly interested in these questions.
