With increasing frequency, human organs and tissues are being placed in the stream of commercial transactions to be treated as commodities. The transplant community, the media, and legislative bodies are following this commercial development with intense interest. Low-income children, especially those with chronic disease and other health issues, are among the most vulnerable members of society. The Health Law Partnership, a medical-legal partnership (MLP), was developed to address the legal needs of low-income children and their families living in Georgia and who receive healthcare services from Children's Healthcare of Atlanta. HeLP's creators understood the importance of proactively addressing the social determinants of children's health, many of which have legal antecedents and result from illness and health-related complications caused by socioeconomic factors. Collaborative Diagnosis: Interdisciplinary Problem-Solving Between Physicians And Lawyers, Robert Pettignano, Lisa Bliss, Sylvia Caley

Patient and client-centered practice and accurate problem diagnosis require that we understand the context within which the patient/clients’ problem originated. Effective problem solving depends upon context-specific solutions. This article describes the interaction of a medical clinician/educator and two legal clinicians/educators who work and teach together as part of an interdisciplinary community collaboration. We demonstrate how a pediatric hospital and two medical schools that treat acutely and chronically ill children collaborate with a legal services clinic based in a law school to provide interdisciplinary clinical education for students and engage in interdisciplinary problem solving for the benefit of patients and clients. …

Approximately one in 10 children in the U.S. has a diagnosis of asthma. African American and low-income children are more likely to be diagnosed with asthma. They are more likely to suffer the worse outcomes because of low socioeconomic status and environmental exposures. A medical-legal partnership is an interdisciplinary collaboration between a medical entity such as a hospital or clinic and a legal entity such as a lawyer, law school, or legal aid society created to address barriers to health care access and limitations to well-being. An interdisciplinary community collaboration, the medical-legal partnership, can improve health status by providing integrated care for patients from racial or ethnic minority and economically disadvantaged backgrounds. Too often, professionals care for patients in silos without a coordinated, systems approach to solving not only the medical problems but also other non-medical problems that impede access to care, reduce compliance and potentially exacerbate the original medical problem. By combining the health care expertise of hospital professionals with the legal expertise of lawyers, resulting coordinated services provide a more holistic and integrated approach to addressing the multiple determinants of health. The Health Law Partnership (HeLP), is a medical legal partnership that is an innovative partnership and community collaboration between medical and legal professionals to address the social, environmental, and economic factors that adversely impact health. HeLP provides free legal services to vulnerable populations, professional education to health care providers, interdisciplinary education to law students and medical students, and systemic advocacy to address the socio-economic issues requiring regulatory or legislative attention.

This article describes the interdisciplinary curriculum of an innovative medical-legal partnership clinic based at Georgia State University College of Law in Atlanta, Georgia. The law school clinic trains law students who work collaboratively with medical residents from Emory University School of Medicine, fourth year students from Morehouse School of Medicine, and masters in social work students, fellows from the university’s masters in public health program and fellows from the masters in bioethics program at Emory University. Medical-legal partnerships (MLP) are inter-professional community collaborations among physicians, lawyers, healthcare providers, healthcare organizations, and other professionals. Medical-legal partnerships seek to improve health and address the social determinants of health by integrating lawyers and legal services into the daily practice of healthcare delivery. This article will demonstrate how medical-legal partnership enhances a healthcare organization’s ability to address the “six aims for improvement” identified by the Institute of Medicine’s report, Crossing the Quality Chasm: A New Health System for the Twenty-first Century.
