Modeling And Computer Simulation Of Fault Calculations For Transmission Lines, Dr. Adel A. Elbaset Dec 2009

Modeling And Computer Simulation Of Fault Calculations For Transmission Lines, Dr. Adel A. Elbaset

Dr. Adel A. Elbaset

Calculation of transmission line faults has a fundamental importance in the fault detection, classification, and location determination of faults in transmission line. This paper presents a proposed computer program based on Matlab software to calculate all ten types of shunt faults that may occur in a transmission line. Various fault scenarios (fault types, fault locations and fault impedance) are considered in this paper. The inputs of the proposed program are line length, source voltage, positive, negative and zero sequence for source impedance, line charging, and transmission line impedance. The output of the algorithm is used to train an artificial intelligence …

Location Based Services - A Bridge Too Far For Data Linkage And Behaviour Under Security And Privacy Concerns?, Marcus R. Wigan Dec 2009

Location Based Services - A Bridge Too Far For Data Linkage And Behaviour Under Security And Privacy Concerns?, Marcus R. Wigan

Marcus R Wigan

Location-based services (LBS) are dependent on a knowledge of a real time location, knowledge of the environment, and integrated with communications. An ideal specification for travel data collection. LBS has become pervasive very swiftly, but the implications are not yet widely recognised. The addition of realtime information, response and service providers to the now familiar combination of GPS, and data recording is the focus of the present paper. The business development path to LBS is outlined, and the implications for data gathering, matching and response considered. The privacy and surveillance aspects are of varying sensitivity in different cultures, even within …

Connecting Quantum Dots And Bionanoparticles In Hybrid Nanoscale Ultra-Thin Films, Ravisubhash Tangirala, Yunxia Hu, Maisie Joralemon, Qingling Zhang, Jinbo He, Thomas P. Russell, Todd S. Emrick

Todd S. Emrick

Ligand-functionalized CdSe quantum dots and nanorods, and horse spleen ferritin bionanoparticles, were co-assembled at an oil-water interface, then used in polymerization at the interface, effectively cross-linking the assembled mixtures of nanoparticles into robust structures. Both ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP), and imine formation, proved suitable for preparation of the desired ultra-thin films in the form of capsules and sheets. The nanoparticle-based films prepared by ROMP exhibit chemical stability, while those prepared by aldehyde-amine coupling could be disrupted by addition of acid. Characterization of these hybrid nanoparticle-based materials, using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and fluorescence confocal microscopy, confirmed the presence of both …

Optimal Design Of Wind-Pv-Diesel-Battery System Using Genetic Algorithm, Dr. Adel A. Elbaset Jan 2009

Optimal Design Of Wind-Pv-Diesel-Battery System Using Genetic Algorithm, Dr. Adel A. Elbaset

Dr. Adel A. Elbaset

The optimization of diesel generators (DGs) and renewable energy sources have to be done within a cost benefit, high reliability and environmentally friendly framework. Most of optimization method just consider only from economical point of view. This paper presents complete optimization method involving of cost, reliability and pollutant emission into optimization process. The reliability level is analyzed using basic probabilistic concept in order to find loss of load probability (LOLP). This value is then used to determine the customer damage cost due to electricity interruption. Meanwhile, CO2 emission as an indicator of pollution is calculated to determine the annual emission …

The Ethical Phenomenon Of Gm-Corn: Anger, Anxiety, And Arrogance In Crossing American Borders, Jules Simon

Jules Simon

In terms of phenomenology, I often wonder about the relevance of what I do as a philosopher for the life of those with whom I come into contact. This ‘coming into contact’ happens for me on several levels: as one human among many, as a husband and father and son and brother, as a teacher, as a neighbor, and as country or city dweller. I remember with fondness those times in the late sultry summer months when, as a youth, I would drive with my father to this or that local farm-stand on some remote back road in the hills …

Machines Versus Compassion: Comparing Male And Female Students In Biology-Based Engineering Discipline, Paul D. Schreuders, Susan E. Mannon, Brian Rutherford Dec 2008

Machines Versus Compassion: Comparing Male And Female Students In Biology-Based Engineering Discipline, Paul D. Schreuders, Susan E. Mannon, Brian Rutherford

Paul Schreuders

Biology‐based engineering disciplines have been the most successful at recruiting women into engineering. An analysis of gender differences in student experiences in such disciplines helps illuminate ways to combat the under‐representation of women in engineering. This article examines the academic backgrounds, expressed interests, and student experiences of 424 women and men in biology‐based engineering programs throughout the country. Gender similarities in the broad engineering activities of design, building, and analysis were found. Gender differences were identified in the applications of these activities. Male students were significantly more interested in the applications in the areas of agriculture, automation, and irrigation, while …
