In order to meet the increasing expectations of industry,

technology management programs combine the application

of technical skills with management competencies. The aim

of the Association of Technology, Management, and Applied

Engineering (ATMAE) is to develop professionals

committed to solving complex technological problems,

while advancing the technologist and applied engineering

workforce. However, there is a wide variability of perceptions

regarding the technologist and the technology manager.

Clarity concerning the required competencies for an entry-

2012 Association of Technology, Management, and Applied Engineering (ATMAE) Conference Proceedings In 2010, the ATMAE Management Division set out to define an applicable technology management body of knowledge using a collection of core competencies. The research incorporated existing models, industry opinions, and educator experts. ATMAE members at both the 2010 and 2011 conferences reviewed initial versions of the competency model. This article provides a framework for analyzing the performance of three popular root cause analysis tools: the cause-and-effect diagram, the interrelationship diagram, and the current reality tree. The literature confirmed that these tools have the capacity to find root causes with varying degrees of accuracy and quality. The literature, however, lacks a means for selecting the appropriate root cause analysis tool based upon objective performance criteria. To solve a problem, one must first recognize and understand what is causing the problem. According to Wilson et al. (1993), a root cause is the most basic reason for an undesirable condition or problem. Selected Collaborative Problem-Solving Methods For Industry, Mark Doggett

In problem solving, the root cause of the problem produces an undesirable effect. Any pursuit that does not seek the root cause leads only to the symptom of the problem and, by definition, solving a symptom will not solve a problem. Problem solvers identify root causes of problems to be able to predict future cause and effect relationships. The purposeful application of an analysis method can address complex problems using a structured approach rather than emotion or intuition.
