Using Groundwater Modeling To Assess Groundwater And Stream Connectivity In A River Restoration Application, John Joseph Lunzer Apr 2019

Using Groundwater Modeling To Assess Groundwater And Stream Connectivity In A River Restoration Application, John Joseph Lunzer

Graduate Theses & Non-Theses

Historic placer mining operations along the Middle Fork John Day River (MFJD) north of Galena, Oregon have left the MFJD channel straightened, incised and lacking in riverbed structure. This lack of riverbed structure makes this stretch of the MFJD poor habitat for trout and migrating salmon. In order to restore this stretch of the MFJD to better serve aquatic species, Inter-Fluve Inc. (IF), United States Forest Service (USFS) and The Freshwater Trust (TFT) will be performing restoration to both the MFJD channel as well as Bear Creek, a tributary of the MFJD. The proposed restoration work will consist of re-routing ...

Dynamic Mechanical Response Of Additively Manufactured 316l And Alsi10mg, Kristofer Kuelper

Graduate Theses & Non-Theses

Additive manufacturing (AM), or 3D printing, is a layer by layer method for the fabrication of end use parts. Its utilization in the production of metallic materials, while relatively new, is promising as an alternative technique to build custom or small batch parts with much greater agility than traditional manufacturing methods. The laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) AM technique offers a combination of high geometric accuracy and good mechanical properties for a variety of materials even without post-processing. It can do this by adjusting a number of processing parameters including the intensity of the laser and the thickness of the ...

Development Of A Uav-Based System To Monitor Air Quality Over An Oil Field, Siwen Liu Oct 2018

Development Of A Uav-Based System To Monitor Air Quality Over An Oil Field, Siwen Liu

Graduate Theses & Non-Theses

The growth of hydraulic fracturing has pushed the whole petroleum industries forward. As a result, gas (mainly methane [CH4]) emissions have significantly increased over the past decades (Macey et al., 2014). Gas leaks can occur at almost all stages of a petroleum production process, such as drilling, fracking, and refining. For years, ground-based air quality monitoring has been conducted around production sites. An improved understanding of air quality would be enabled by supplementing ground-based with airborne monitoring. The latter would involve the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to carry a compact, portable air monitoring system. The purpose of this ...

Geophysical Investigation Of Dewatering In Lolo Creek, Southwest Missoula, Montana, Usa, Akpofure Orubu Oct 2017

Geophysical Investigation Of Dewatering In Lolo Creek, Southwest Missoula, Montana, Usa, Akpofure Orubu

Graduate Theses & Non-Theses

Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ERT), Spontaneous Potential (SP), Multichannel Analysis of Surface Waves (MASW) and Seismic Refraction Tomography methods have been used to provide valuable information on the seepage pathways leading to dewatering of Lolo Creek and the subsurface lithology of the area. Results from the MASW and seismic refraction tomography studies show a bedrock elevation of about 35 m close to Highway 93 and about 27 m at the end of the 288 m East-West seismic line running through Lewis and Clark Drive. ERT results show a shallow high resistive geolectric layer underlain by low resistive layers. The Eocene bedrock ...

Geology Of The Middle Member Of The Bakken Formation In Divide County, North Dakota, Mandy Brewer Oct 2017

Geology Of The Middle Member Of The Bakken Formation In Divide County, North Dakota, Mandy Brewer

Graduate Theses & Non-Theses

The Upper Devonian-Lower Mississippian Bakken Formation of Williston Basin is a large unconventional oil and gas play consisting of a lower shale member, a middle member, and an upper shale member. The middle member is a production target because it contains porosity and petroleum expelled from the shale members around it. Variable production and sweet spots of the Bakken in the study area of Divide County, ND and 15 miles around Divide County in the USA prompted a closer look at middle member Bakken sediments. For this study, 606 wells were correlated and thin sections from two wells located 10 ...

Modeling The Effect Of Methane Vs. Carbon Dioxide Injection On Oil Recovery: Case Study: The East Vacuum Grayburg-San Andres Unit, Lea County, New Mexico, Charles Ohalekwu Apr 2017

Modeling The Effect Of Methane Vs. Carbon Dioxide Injection On Oil Recovery: Case Study: The East Vacuum Grayburg-San Andres Unit, Lea County, New Mexico, Charles Ohalekwu

Graduate Theses & Non-Theses

This project aims to determine if methane (CH4) injection is more effective and economical than carbon dioxide (CO2) injection in a conventional dolomite reservoir by using the East Vacuum Grayburg-San Andres Unit (EVGSAU), Lea County, New Mexico as a model. This was done by simulating a CH4 and CO2 injection system and estimating the economics for each. CH4 injection has not been done at the EVGSAU, however CO2 has been used as a method of enhanced oil recovery.

The EVGSAU is located on the eastern side of the Vacuum Field, approximately 15 miles northwest of Hobbs in Lea County, New ...

Property Sensitivity Study For Oil Recovery In The Bakken, Daniel Beach Apr 2017

Property Sensitivity Study For Oil Recovery In The Bakken, Daniel Beach

Graduate Theses & Non-Theses

The upstream (exploration and production) end of the petroleum industry has experienced tremendous success over the past fifteen years by employing innovative ways to drill and stimulate new wells thereby greatly increasing production. Based upon these successes, there has been a shift to unconventional wells, where the cost for drilling and completing wells can be much more expensive. Most unconventional wells target tight rock formations having low permeability and porosity. As a result, these reservoirs require enhanced stimulation to improve recovery operations to establish profitable oil or gas production. These wells are drilled horizontally to maximize contact area in the ...

Collecting, Preparing, And Synthesizing Well Log Data For Subsurface Mapping: Example From The Bakken Formation, Asel Sherimkulova Oct 2016

Collecting, Preparing, And Synthesizing Well Log Data For Subsurface Mapping: Example From The Bakken Formation, Asel Sherimkulova

Graduate Theses & Non-Theses

Late Devonian and Early Mississippian Bakken Formation consists of three distinct members: the upper shale, middle, and lower shale. The upper and lower shales are excellent source rocks, rich in organic content. The organic material in the shales was derived from planktonic algae. Both the upper and lower shales were deposited during a transgressive event in hypoxic to anoxic conditions. The original total organic carbon content in the Bakken shales ranges from 20 to 22 weight percent, however; the content decreases to 10 to 17 weight percent as a result of maturation of hydrocarbons and primary expelling of oil. High ...

Distributed Fiber-Optic Temperature Sensor Validations Using Field Deployments In The Flooded Orphan Boy Mine Shaft In Butte, Mt, Elliott Mazur Oct 2016

Distributed Fiber-Optic Temperature Sensor Validations Using Field Deployments In The Flooded Orphan Boy Mine Shaft In Butte, Mt, Elliott Mazur

Graduate Theses & Non-Theses

The process of sensor validation through experimentation with the Omnisens Distributed Temperature and Strain (DITEST) Brillouin Optical Time Domain Analyzer (BOTDA) proved to be a challenging project. The project encompassed sensor calibrations, system error minimization, sensor network design and deployment, and the characterization of temperatures in the Orphan Boy Mine shaft. Fiber-optic cable sensor calibrations yielded linear relationship coefficients 0.6-1.0MHZ/°F, indicating a strong positive correlation between Brillouin Frequency Shifts and temperature. Calibrated sensors demonstrated accuracies near ±0.8°F using the corrected error bounds from residual analyses as the benchmark. Fiber-optic measurement accuracy and repeatability were controlled ...

Processing And Interpretation Of Three-Component Vertical Seismic Profile Data, Ross Sea, Antarctica, Meltem Akan

Graduate Theses & Non-Theses

The Antarctic Geological Drilling Program (ANDRILL) AND-2A drill hole was drilled, cored and logged in southern McMurdo Sound (SMS) in the western Ross Sea, Antarctica during the austral summer of 2007. A single near-offset, over-sea ice vertical seismic profile (VSP) was collected in the AND-2A drill hole as a part of the logging program. The source for VSP data collection was a Generator Injector (GI) air-gun which was suspended by a cable through a hole made in the sea ice. The reason for selecting a GI air gun was the minimization of the bubble pulse effects which are prevalent in ...
