Determining Cause Of Failure For Load Cells Supporting Vertical Pressure Vessels Subject To Wind Loading, Seth Nowak Jan 2022

Determining Cause Of Failure For Load Cells Supporting Vertical Pressure Vessels Subject To Wind Loading, Seth Nowak

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Wind loads cannot be avoided during a natural disaster such as a hurricane and could affect the strength and stability of vertical pressure vessels during exposure. Vertical pressure vessels cater to large wind loads; therefore, it is imperative to study the effect of additional loading on the structures. In this study, three pressure vessels with volumes of 50 CuFt, 200 CuFt, and 1100 CuFt, supported by three equidistant load cells under their legs are individually analyzed to determine von mises stress to estimate yield failure criteria. Two load rating criteria, maximum load capacity and water-filled condition (critical condition) are utilized …

Tooling For Injection Molding Using Laser-Powder Bed Fusion., Mohith Ram Buxani Jul 2018

Tooling For Injection Molding Using Laser-Powder Bed Fusion., Mohith Ram Buxani

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Laser-Powder Bed Fusion (L-PBF) has been considered for some time by the injection molding industry for the fabrication of tooling for injection molding in order to address large lead times and costs for tool-making. Computer-aided simulations are also routinely used to evaluate new part and mold designs as well as understanding the effects of material compositions and processing conditions on part quality and overall productivity. However, there remains a significant need to integrate the perspectives from injection molding, 3D printing, metal powders, and component design and process simulation to better utilize LPBF for fabricating tooling required for injection molding. The …

Structural And Aerodynamic Design, Procedure And Analysis Of A Small V-Shaped Vertical Axis Wind Turbine, Odari J. Whyte Jan 2018

Structural And Aerodynamic Design, Procedure And Analysis Of A Small V-Shaped Vertical Axis Wind Turbine, Odari J. Whyte

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Over the last two decades there has been a renewed interest in Vertical Axis Wind Turbines. This turbine configuration though unpopular for large-scale generation has found a niche market in the way of offshore energy harvesting. However, offshore wind has its challenges. In this thesis a detailed comprehensive study of a proposed V-shaped vertical axis turbine rotor is performed in order to examine its structural and aerodynamic characteristics. The design met and exceeded the safety parameters establish for test bed operation, showing a factor of safety of 1.87 with regard to fatigue stress response. A satisfactory fatigue stress design life …

Enhancing Project Management With Lean World Class Manufacturing In Construction, Jacob Randles Jan 2016

Enhancing Project Management With Lean World Class Manufacturing In Construction, Jacob Randles

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In construction, the goal of commercial projects is to turn a profit. This is achieved by minimizing inputs and maximizing outputs while building a product that meets the customer’s perception of value. Value is determined through pre-negotiated specifications, plans, and material quality. Even in U.S. military construction, the unit executing the construction wants to complete the task on time and on budget, which can be difficult to do. Studies on project completion showcase a surprisingly high rate of failure in reaching the aforementioned “on time, on budget” goal. It is important to understand the nuances and details of U.S. Army …
