The importance of tungsten has encouraged the search for minerals of this metal, and consequently new deposits have been discovered, and known deposits have been re-examined. Western Montana has rather widespread deposits if low-grade types are also considered. Many deposits were known long ago, but abandoned because the use of tungsten was still in its beginning stage and therefore little attention was given to this type of mineral.

The purpose of this investigation is to determine the fundamental magnetic characteristics of induction and hysteresis, for the alloy Cu2MnAl. This is a ternary, ferromagnetic Heusler alloy. The problem is not only to determine these characteristics for the alloy as-cast but to heat treat it and observe the manner in which different heat treat­ments affect these two fundamental magnetic characteristics.

In the hydrometallurgy of copper, probably the most widely used method for the precipitation of copper is by electrolysis using insoluble anodes. The process is similar in many respects to the electrolytic refining of copper; one of the main differences is the use of insoluble anodes in electrowinning as compared to the use of impure copper anodes in electrorefining. Impurities, however, are common to both processes. The nature of these impurities differ and the problem of purifying the electrolyte is also different.

The method used to accomplish the final results is the immersion pro­cess. It can be defined as the process of coating a metal with a second metal by immersing the first in a solution containing ions of the second.

Many fine-grained igneous rocks, basaltic and felsitic in character, are difficult to classify. In numer­ous cases, it is impossible to classify these types of rocks by quick methods of identification. It was hoped at the beginning of this study that refractive indices of glasses formed by quick artificial fusion of samples from selected suites of igneous rocks would show a close cor­relation in chemical composition.

Driving between Butte, and Whitehall, Montana, on highway U.S. 10S, one observes an interesting phenomenon in the lower end of Little Pipestone Creek canyon. One side and the bottom of the canyon is cut inthe hard igneous rocks of the Boulder Batholith, and the other side of the canyon is made of unconsoli­dated sand, gravel, and cobbles.

It has been hoped that a micropaleontological study of the shales of the Upper Cretaceous Colorado Group in northern Montana would reveal certain faunal zones which would serve as markers in an otherwise drab, undifferentiated, 1800 feet of grey, fissile shale. This paper presents the results of a study of the microfauna in certain samples from this shale in the Sunburst Dome area north of Shelby, Montana.

Although at no time since its zenith did it ever regain its once great production, it did provide a livelihood for those who worked it. Now with the American Smelting and Refining Company interested in it, perhaps it will once again become an important producer.

The oxide minerals, such as cerussite, are not as amen­able to flotation as the sulphide minerals. Sulphidization is the usual means used today to increase the recovery of an oxide flotation; however, sulphidization under the most ad­vantageous conditions does not yield very satisfactory re­coveries.

The exact geologic age of the Jefferson limestone in Montana has not been definitely determined, other than it is probably of upper, but possibly in part of middle Devonian age. Although not of immediate or apparent economic importance, the determination of the exact age of the Jefferson limestone may be of much value in connection with the discoveries of large quantities of oil in Devonian strata in the northern Great Plains and, in particular, with the extensive deep drilling in northeastern Montana which is anticipated during the summer of 1951.
