Engineering and Technology Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

This study explores the use of augmented reality smart glasses (ARSGs) by physicians and their adoption of these products in the Turkish medical industry. Google Glass was used as a demonstrative example for the introduction of ARSGs. We proposed an exploratory model based on the technology acceptance model by Davis. Exogenous factors in the model were defined by performing semi-structured in-depth interviews, along with the use of an expert panel in addition to the technology adoption literature. The framework was tested by means of a field study, data was collected via an Internet survey, and path analysis was used. The ...

Modeling And Solution Approaches For Non-Traditional Network Flow Problems With Complicating Constraints, Negin Enayaty Ahangar Aug 2018

Modeling And Solution Approaches For Non-Traditional Network Flow Problems With Complicating Constraints, Negin Enayaty Ahangar

Theses and Dissertations

In this dissertation, we model three network-based optimization problems. Chapter 2 addresses the question of what the operation plan should be for interdependent infrastructure systems in resource-constrained environments so that they collectively operate at the highest level. We develop a network-based operation model of these systems that accounts for interdependencies among them. To solve this large-scale model, a solution approach is proposed that relatively quickly generates high-quality solutions to the problem.

Chapter 3 presents a routing model for a single train within a railyard with the objective of minimizing the total length traveled by train. The difference between this problem ...

Advances In Composite Manufacturing Of Helicopter Parts, Tobias A. Weber, Hans-Joachim K. Ruff-Stahl Jul 2018

Advances In Composite Manufacturing Of Helicopter Parts, Tobias A. Weber, Hans-Joachim K. Ruff-Stahl

Hans-Joachim Ruff-Stahl

This study investigates and compares different methods for improving standard autoclave composite manufacturing in order to find suitable approaches to a more efficient composite production. The goal is not only a reduction in manufacturing times and costs but also quality enhancement. Improved part quality while decreasing costs enables a manufacturer of composite parts to expand its market share, especially in the helicopter market, which has been constantly shrinking over the last two years. Various approaches such as improved tooling technology, the use of automated systems for lamination as well as outsourcing are examined to provide an overview of possible advancements ...

Board 106: Enhancing Critical Life-Cycle Decision Making In Complex Engineering Projects In The Context Of Engineering Economy Courses, K. Jo Min, John K. Jackman, Farshad Niayeshpour

Industrial and Manufacturing Systems Engineering Conference Proceedings and Posters

Complex engineering projects (CEPs) such as electric transmission networks and transportation infrastructure are becoming increasingly important to the public in general and even more so to engineers. These projects are large-scale in terms of money and time and contain significant uncertainties over their life-cycle, with fluctuations in input and output costs. Due to these uncertainties, there are conditional opportunities (e.g., on prices) to make critical decisions such as investment in construction of power generation facilities or decommissioning of such facilities. Such decisions constitute strategic flexibilities or "real options" because the decision maker can alter the course of an investment ...

Bi-Directional Testing For Change Point Detection In Poisson Processes, Moinak Bhaduri May 2018

Bi-Directional Testing For Change Point Detection In Poisson Processes, Moinak Bhaduri

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Point processes often serve as a natural language to chronicle an event's temporal evolution, and significant changes in the flow, synonymous with non-stationarity, are usually triggered by assignable and frequently preventable causes, often heralding devastating ramifications. Examples include amplified restlessness of a volcano, increased frequencies of airplane crashes, hurricanes, mining mishaps, among others. Guessing these time points of changes, therefore, merits utmost care. Switching the way time traditionally propagates, we posit a new genre of bidirectional tests which, despite a frugal construct, prove to be exceedingly efficient in culling out non-stationarity under a wide spectrum of environments. A journey ...

Dee Zee Manufacturing is a company that is most known for making running boards, tool boxes, and roof racks for trucks and SUV’s. The company is becoming more sought after in the automotive industry as they are now producing OEM products for major car companies. The OEE does not reflect current process. The resources aren’t at their point-of-use. The proper number of operators is not defined. By establishing one piece flow, the number of operators can be determined. Not having the correct number of operators could create certain areas in the process to be starved of productivity. By ...

Grain Dryer Testing Facility, Blake L. Biermann, Ben A. Burkhart, Cj A. Cheever, Ryan P. Eilertson, Joseph R. Vanstrom, Jacek A. Koziel

Jacek A. Koziel

Our client, Dr. Maier, is a post-harvest engineer at Iowa State University. He presented our group with the problem that industry currently doesn’t have a third party facility that is able to test their grain dryers so this can lead to inconsistent results. There are tests being done on companies dryers, but it is by themselves and under their own procedure. The problem that arises from this is that each company is able to skew their data by their tests. Companies would like to be able to compare their dryers to other companies fairly to see the results. We ...

Quantitative Methods For Select Problems In Facility Location And Facility Logistics, Bin Li May 2018

Quantitative Methods For Select Problems In Facility Location And Facility Logistics, Bin Li

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation presented three logistics problems. The first problem is a parallel machine scheduling problems that considers multiple unique characteristics including release dates, due dates, limited machine availability and job splitting. The objective of is to minimize the total amount of time required to complete work. A mixed integer programming model is presented and a heuristic is developed for solving the problem. The second problem extends the first parallel scheduling problem to include two additional practical considerations. The first is a setup time that occurs when warehouse staff change from one type of task to another. The second is a ...

Predicting The Impact Of Resource Delays On A Construction Project’S Critical Path Using Monte Carlo Simulation, Colby Weishaar May 2018

Predicting The Impact Of Resource Delays On A Construction Project’S Critical Path Using Monte Carlo Simulation, Colby Weishaar

Theses and Dissertations

The construction industry is a complex and evolving industry, making the project manager’s job of planning, organizing, and making decisions a difficult one. One of the most difficult decisions throughout a project is determining what resources are needed to complete a task by the deadline. Uncertainties cause risks within the schedule often creating delays for which the project manager must develop a mitigation plan once risks are identified. After conducting a review of the literature, no research was found examining the use of an analytical model to estimate the delays caused within the resource allocation process. If an analytical ...

TSM 416 Technology Capstone Projects

1st Flow is a sub company of Reicksview Farms. Reicksview Farms is a large farming operation in Northeast Iowa focusing on row crop and hog operations. The system initially was implemented solely in their own facilities. While there have been sales to several producers, Brenneman Pork has purchased the most units from 1st Flow. The system is prone to cracking and stripping however the causes of these issues are unknown. Current issues being seen are moisture being allowed in the system and causing feed to not flow correctly and the agitator not being able to turn. As a result, it ...
