Research presented in this paper focuses on developing models to estimate the systemreliability of Unmanned Ground Vehicles using knowledge and data from similar systems. Traditional reliability approaches often require detailed knowledge of a system and are used in later design stages as well as development, operational test and evaluation, and operations. The critical role of reliability and its impact on acquisition program performance, cost, and schedule motivate the need for improved system reliability models in the early design stages. When designing a product, the earlier the potential risks can be identified, the more costs can be saved, as it is easier to modify a design in its early stages. Several methods exist to analyze the risk in a system, but all require a mature design. However, by applying the concept of “common interfaces” to a functional model and utilizing a historical knowledge base, it is possible to analyze chains of failures during the conceptual phase of product design. In recent years, there has been significant attention given to improved methods and tools for engineering design. While advances for the latter stages of design have been impressive, this has not been the case for the early stages of design. In general, advances have provided for either a top-down or a bottom-up approach to design; ignoring the requirements for both abstraction and detail in a concurrently engineered development process. This paper describes an integrated conceptual modeling framework for a blended methodology. The utility and extensibility of this framework are considered in discussion and by way of examples.
