Using Mathematica To Aid Simulation Analysis, Paul Savory Dec 1995

Using Mathematica To Aid Simulation Analysis, Paul Savory

Department of Industrial and Management Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

As computer power has increased, so has the capability of software developers to write programs that assist people with time-consuming tasks. Mathematica is such a program. The objective of this paper is to demonstrate how Mathematica, a symbolic programming environment, can be used to aid simulation analysis. In addition to a general discussion of Mathematica’s uses, advantages, and disadvantages, several examples will be presented. The examples include using Mathematica for distribution fitting, queueing analysis, random number generation, and creating a surface plot for optimization.

Cumulative Average Pricing Method For Estimating Average Service Life, Mahendra Babu Hosangadi Dec 1995

Cumulative Average Pricing Method For Estimating Average Service Life, Mahendra Babu Hosangadi

Masters Theses

The study determined if accuracy of estimation of retirement price of industrial equipment was affected by using a cumulative average pricing (CAP) method at varying conditions of inflation rate, service life, and life characteristics. The study also determined the accuracy of estimating the average life of unaged data by simulated plant record (SPR) method. Thirty-six experiments were conducted at varying conditions of inflation rate, curve type and average life. The study was conducted for two left modal curves, two symmetrical modal curves and two right modal curves at 20 and 40 years average life using three different inflation rates: 3%, …

A Psychological Perspective On Service Segmentation Models: The Significance Of Accounting For Consumers' Perceptions Of Waiting And Service, Ziv Carmon, J. George Shanthikumar, Tali F. Carmon Nov 1995

A Psychological Perspective On Service Segmentation Models: The Significance Of Accounting For Consumers' Perceptions Of Waiting And Service, Ziv Carmon, J. George Shanthikumar, Tali F. Carmon

Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering

We examine how service should be divided and scheduled when it can be provided in multiple separate segments. We analyze variants of this problem using a model with a conventional function describing the waiting cost, that is modified to account for some aspects of the psychological cost of waiting in line. We show that consideration of the psychological cost can result in prescriptions that are inconsistent with the common wisdom of queuing theorists derived according to the conventional approach (e.g., equal load assignments). More generally, our intention in this paper is to illustrate that aspects of the psychological cost of …

System Dynamic Modeling Of Activity And Flow Relationships In Plant Layout Problems, Gary Allen Weaver Oct 1995

System Dynamic Modeling Of Activity And Flow Relationships In Plant Layout Problems, Gary Allen Weaver

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The problem of determining an optimal plant layout involves the distribution of machinery, service areas, and storage spaces. The solution is usually determined for a specific period of time and static in nature. Planning for the plant layout is normally performed at the onset of new construction, or major refurbishment of an existing facility. In addition, plant layouts are renewed when a significant productivity decrease is experienced over long periods of time and linked to material flow problems, and when an expanding company plans for major capital expenditures in equipment and space. Due to the dynamic nature of business the …

Traffic Control For Automated Highway Systems: A Conceptual Framework, H.-S. Jacob Tsao Sep 1995

Traffic Control For Automated Highway Systems: A Conceptual Framework, H.-S. Jacob Tsao

Faculty Publications

This paper proposes a conceptual framework for designing a traffic control scheme. It adopts a top-down approach to defining major design steps starting with high-level feature definition. With the desired features defined, the top-down approach then identifies and defines moves and related planning and movement functions that are required for supporting the desired features. The paper takes a systems view and identifies the safety issues regarding the movement coordination of the large number of vehicles on an Automated Highway System (AHS).

A Comparison Of Consistent Versus Inconsistent Scheduling Rules In A Flow Shop Environment, Nicola Gismondi Sep 1995

A Comparison Of Consistent Versus Inconsistent Scheduling Rules In A Flow Shop Environment, Nicola Gismondi

Theses and Dissertations

A consistent scheduling rule is one which will ensure a job's priority (relative to all other job's) will remain constant as it moves from queue to queue in a production system. Previous research concerning flow shop priority scheduling rules focused on comparison of either consistent or inconsistent rules. Conversely, this study sought to provide additional insight by comprising consistent and inconsistent rules in a flow shop environment The Air Force uses both types of rules in maintenance and logistics scheduling. Time and money can be saved if the scheduling managers can better understand the effect of consistency on a system. …

Just In Time Manufacturing: A Migration From Materials Requirements Planning, Scott A. Koehler Sep 1995

Just In Time Manufacturing: A Migration From Materials Requirements Planning, Scott A. Koehler

Theses and Dissertations

Manufacturing planning and control systems play an important role in an organization's effectiveness. Over the past twenty to thirty years, U.S. manufacturing companies have faced increasing competition for market share from Japanese and other Pacific rim countries. This thesis will investigate the evolutionary path followed by manufacturing companies that have implemented various manufacturing planning and control systems. Specifically, Materials Requirements Planning (MRP) and Just In Time (JIT) production will be analyzed. MRP is a means of convening demand for the final product into a requirements schedule for the various components comprising that product. The JIT philosophy calls for continuously improving …

Addition Of Automatic Dimensioning Feature To D-M-E’S Ultimate Mold Base Design Software, Cori L. Brown

Masters Theses

There have been many improvements in the plastics industry over the past few years. One of these areas is in the design of injection molds. This area has been enhanced by the use of Computer-Aided Design systems and furthered by the creation of specialized mold design software. The Ultimate® design system from D-M-E has made a mold designer's job much easier by automating much of this process. This project extends the function of this software by adding an automatic dimensioning feature that will make the mold design process less tedious and less time consuming. This addition will also standardize …

Development Of A Mold Trial Procedure For Establishing A Robust Process, Marc R. Vander Kooi Aug 1995

Development Of A Mold Trial Procedure For Establishing A Robust Process, Marc R. Vander Kooi

Masters Theses

To reduce variation in the injection molding process it is essential to understand the effect of process, mold, and material variables on critical part characteristics. Gaining a thorough understanding of these variables is often difficult due to the limited time manufacturers typically have available for mold trials. To address this issue, the Premier Class Injection Molding consortium (PCIM) has performed numerous experiments relating to shot-to-shot repeatability. Using the PCIM data set and experimentation procedures as a base, a procedure was developed to collect data during a mold trial. Incorporating small experiments and statistical analysis, the new procedure allows meaningful data …

Effects Of Ergonomic Worksite Changes On Risks For Cumulative Trauma Disorders Of The Upper Body In An Assembly And Press Operation Job, David B. Mahone May 1995

Effects Of Ergonomic Worksite Changes On Risks For Cumulative Trauma Disorders Of The Upper Body In An Assembly And Press Operation Job, David B. Mahone

Theses

Cumulative trauma of the upper body is associated with a variety of individual and job factors. An effort to optimize the human-hardware interface to minimize cumulative trauma is favored. Workers in a set of jobs had complained about hand/wrist and shoulder discomfort. One job was selected for testing alternate machine controls and worksite layout. Electromyography was used to test muscle activity, and photogoniometry was used to measure posture.

For the group of ten worker-subjects, statistically significant decreases in hand/wrist and shoulder muscle activity were found. A marginal, but significant increase in neck muscle activity was also found. When one subject …

Analysis Of A Design For Its Quality Manufacturability In Terms Of Misalignments And Fastener Related Problems, Abhinav Dhar May 1995

Analysis Of A Design For Its Quality Manufacturability In Terms Of Misalignments And Fastener Related Problems, Abhinav Dhar

Theses

This study analyzes the relationship between design parameters established at the initial stage of the design process and the manufacturing quality problems that manifest themselves during production. Specifically, we study the relationship between design features and the occurrence of misalignment defects and fastener related problems.

This outcome of this work is a methodology, Design for Quality Manufacturability (DFQM). DFQM addresses the likelihood that defects will occur during the manufacture of a product in a standard plant. This is based on the premise that defects in assembled products are often influenced by some features of the design and/or assembly process. These …

The system was evaluated and tested for parts provided by Norfolk Naval Shipyard.

A Discrete Single Server Queue With Markovian Arrivals And Phase Type Group Services, Attahiru Sule Alfa, K. Laurie Dolhun, Srinivas R. Chakravarthy Mar 1995

A Discrete Single Server Queue With Markovian Arrivals And Phase Type Group Services, Attahiru Sule Alfa, K. Laurie Dolhun, Srinivas R. Chakravarthy

Industrial & Manufacturing Engineering Publications

We consider a single-server discrete queueing system in which arrivals occur according to a Markovian arrival process. Service is provided in groups of size no more than M customers. The service times are assumed to follow a discrete phase type distribution, whose representation may depend on the group size. Under a probabilistic service rule, which depends on the number of customers waiting in the queue, this system is studied as a Markov process. This type of queueing system is encountered in the operations of an automatic storage retrieval system. The steady-state probability vector is shown to be of (modified) matrix-geometric …

Merits Of The Production Volume Based Similarity Coefficient In Machine Cell Formation, Hamid Seifoddini, Manocher Djassemi Jan 1995

Merits Of The Production Volume Based Similarity Coefficient In Machine Cell Formation, Hamid Seifoddini, Manocher Djassemi

Industrial Technology and Packaging

In this paper, two types of similarity coefficients are compared: (1) the Jaccard's coefficient and (2) the production volume based coefficient. Each is used to form a cellular manufacturing system whose performance will be used as a measure of effectiveness of the similarity coefficient. The sum of intercellular and intracellular material handling costs is used as a criterion for performance evaluation.

Simulation Project Characteristics In Industrial Settings, Paul Savory Jan 1995

Simulation Project Characteristics In Industrial Settings, Paul Savory

Department of Industrial and Management Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

In a survey of practitioners of discrete-event simulation from industry and research institutes who "build models for money," we asked about project goals, user backgrounds and training, organizational types and activities, software and hardware choices, modeling team composition, and effort allocation within a modeling project. We found that (1) only about half of the practitioners have three or more years experience, (2) many academics feel strongly affiliated with their industry clients rather than with their university employers, (3) shop-floor supervisors rarely lead simulation projects, even though their knowledge of the system may be unparalleled, (4)simulation models are generally described as …

Stage Definition For Ahs Deployment And An Ahs Evolutionary Scenario, Jacob Tsao Jan 1995

Stage Definition For Ahs Deployment And An Ahs Evolutionary Scenario, Jacob Tsao

H.-S. Jacob Tsao

Pros and cons of various mature Automated Highway Systems (AHS) have been a subject of intense study. However, such discussions are nothing but intellectual exercises unless the issue of how to evolve, in a planned and managed fashion, the current highway systems towards these mature AHS is also addressed. Since full functionality of a mature AHS cannot be realized suddenly, discrete functional steps must be identified and optimized. This paper defines an evolutionary stage towards a mature AHS as any discernible functional increment whose realization may encounter considerable difficulties requiring a significant amount of conscious effort to overcome. A good …

A Staggered-Diamond Design For Automated/Manual-Hov Highway-To-Highway Interchanges And Constraints On Ahs Design For Accommodating Automated Highway Change, Jacob Tsao Jan 1995

A Staggered-Diamond Design For Automated/Manual-Hov Highway-To-Highway Interchanges And Constraints On Ahs Design For Accommodating Automated Highway Change, Jacob Tsao

H.-S. Jacob Tsao

This paper consists of two components. The First component addresses a key AHS infrastructure support issue—providing eight extra connector ramps, in addition to the eight existing highway-to-highway connector ramps for the conventional manual traffic, at a highway-to-highway interchange for accommodating continuous automated driving from one highway to the crossing highway. The proposed staggered-diamond design requires only four, instead of eight, separate structures and hence greatly increases the feasibility of AHS infrastructure support. However, the reduced infrastructure complexity at such interchanges could still constrain considerably the design, operation and evolution of AHS. This is the focus of the second component. The …

Linearly-Constrained Entropy Maximization Problem With Quadratic Costs And Its Applications To Transportation Planning Problems, Shu-Cherng Fang, Jacob Tsao Jan 1995

Linearly-Constrained Entropy Maximization Problem With Quadratic Costs And Its Applications To Transportation Planning Problems, Shu-Cherng Fang, Jacob Tsao

H.-S. Jacob Tsao

Many transportation problems can be formulated as a linearly-constrained convex programming problem whose objective function consists of entropy functions and other cost-related terms. In this paper, we propose an unconstrained convex programming dual approach to solving these problems. In particular, we focus on a class of linearly-constrained entropy maximization problem with quadratic cost, study its Lagrangian dual, and provide a globally convergent algorithm with a quadratic rate of convergence. The theory and algorithm can be readily applied to the trip distribution problem with quadratic cost and many other entropy-based formulations, including the conventional trip distribution problem with linear cost, the …

Creep Fatigue, Part I: Compilation Of Data And Trends In The Creep-Fatigue Behavior Of Low Alloy Steels, Tarun Goswami

Biomedical, Industrial & Human Factors Engineering Faculty Publications

This paper describes an attempt to compile the creep-fatigue data of low alloy steels. In part I, international data have been collected to compare the variability that exists in a particular low alloy steel when characterized in different laboratories. From this work of compilation, trends in the creep-fatigue behavior of low alloy steels have been identified in Part II of this paper and a review of life prediction methods and assessments will be discussed in subsequent papers. The creep-fatigue behavior, in general, improved with the increase in chromium content; however, when additional alloying elements were added to a standard alloy …

Creep Fatigue, Part Ii: Creep Fatigue Life Prediction: Methods And Trends, Tarun Goswami Jan 1995

Creep Fatigue, Part Ii: Creep Fatigue Life Prediction: Methods And Trends, Tarun Goswami

Biomedical, Industrial & Human Factors Engineering Faculty Publications

Creep-fatigue data of low allow steels were compiled from international sources, and trends in creep-fatigue behavior were identified in Paper I. This paper reviews the methods of creep-fatigue life prediction that were assessed from the compiled data. The methods reviewed in this paper are phenomenological in nature. However, an empirical method has also been discussed which offers very high reliability of the prediction capability. Various test requirements, from which material parameters are determined for each method, have been tabulated. No single method has been generalized as a best method of life prediction for all types of creep-fatigue test conditions.

Creep-Fatigue Life Prediction - A Ductility Model, Tarun Goswami Jan 1995

Creep-Fatigue Life Prediction - A Ductility Model, Tarun Goswami

Biomedical, Industrial & Human Factors Engineering Faculty Publications

Creep-fatigue life prediction methods are briefly reviewed. Phenomenological methods of life prediction are very popular, since they use several test and metallographic parameters in model formulation. They also require numerous test parameters determined from specialized tests. Requirements of phenomenological methods have been summarized. Ductility measurement and modeling aspects have been reviewed. A new model has been developed with the assumption that with increasing fatigue cycles the ductility gradually decreases and the specimen fails as a result of exhaustion of ductility. This has been achieved in terms of dynamic viscosity (product of stress and cycle time), equated with material toughness, which …

Investigation Of The Relationship Between Fuel Injection Nozzle Roto Flow And Hydra Flow And The Engine Torque Of A Diesel Engine, Guang Jin

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this study was to investigate the possibility of reducing diesel engine torque variation by optimizing fuel injection nozzle tip configuration. In order to reduce engine torque variation, test runs were conducted to determine whether fuel injection nozzles affected diesel engine torque. There was a further effort to determine whether a correlation existed between the fuel injection nozzle roto flow and hydra flow, and the engine torque at specified engine speeds.

Engines installed in cotton pickers and tractors were used for this study. Engines, five from the cotton picker and five from the tractor group were chosen randomly …

A Nonlinear Dynamic Method For Supporting Large-Scale Decision-Making In Uncertain Environments, Wayne Woodhams Jan 1995

A Nonlinear Dynamic Method For Supporting Large-Scale Decision-Making In Uncertain Environments, Wayne Woodhams

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations

This research developed a methodology for supporting decision making by reducing uncertainty in decision environments which are too large, dynamic and complex to be treated by traditional quantitative and simulation techniques. These environments are complex because of the free choice associated with human involvement, and the existence of a large number of interrelated factors which influence the outcomes of the decision process. They are dynamic because the ground rules affecting those interrelationships are constantly changing. Uncertainty cannot be treated probabilistically, since identification of a full set of outcomes and factors of influence is not possible.

The venue for the investigation …

Comparing Traditional Statistical Models With Neural Network Models: The Case Of The Relation Of Human Performance Factors To The Outcomes Of Military Combat, William Oliver Hedgepeth

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Statistics and neural networks are analytical methods used to learn about observed experience. Both the statistician and neural network researcher develop and analyze data sets, draw relevant conclusions, and validate the conclusions. They also share in the challenge of creating accurate predictions of future events with noisy data.

Both analytical methods are investigated. This is accomplished by examining the veridicality of both with real system data. The real system used in this project is a database of 400 years of historical military combat. The relationships among the variables represented in this database are recognized as being hypercomplex and nonlinear.
