Reliability Analysis Of Hafnium Oxide Dielectric Based Nanoelectronics, Rui Wan
Reliability Analysis Of Hafnium Oxide Dielectric Based Nanoelectronics, Rui Wan
Doctoral Dissertations
With the physical dimensions ever scaling down, the increasing level of sophistication in nano-electronics requires a comprehensive and multidisciplinary reliability investigation. A kind of nano-devices, HfO2-based high-k dielectric films, are studied in the statistical aspect of reliability as well as electrical and physical aspects of reliability characterization, including charge trapping and degradation mechanisms, breakdown modes and bathtub failure rate estimation.
This research characterizes charge trapping and investigates degradation mechanisms in high-k dielectrics. Positive charges trapped in both bulk and interface contribute to the interface state generation and flat band voltage shift when electrons are injected from the gate …
Reliability In Lean Systems, Robert S. Keyser
Reliability In Lean Systems, Robert S. Keyser
Doctoral Dissertations
Implementation of Lean manufacturing systems often turn into expensive hit-or-miss propositions. Whereas many organizations that lack immediate success quickly abandon their ‘Lean’ plans in hopes that the next great marketing panacea will solve their efficiency woes, organizations that experience early success often have difficulty in sustaining their Lean efforts. To further exacerbate the dilemma, knowledge of the reliability of Lean systems is currently inadequate. This paper proposes a contemporary Lean paradigm – reliability in Lean systems – through the development of an innovative Lean System Reliability model (LSRM). Principally, LSRM models the reliability of Lean subsystems as a basis for …
Person-Environment Fit And Readiness For Change: Exploring The Moderating Role Of Leader-Member Exchange And Perceived Organizational Support, Joana R.C. Pimentel
Person-Environment Fit And Readiness For Change: Exploring The Moderating Role Of Leader-Member Exchange And Perceived Organizational Support, Joana R.C. Pimentel
Doctoral Dissertations
This paper was aimed at investigating the interplay of multiple facets of personenvironment fit with individual readiness for change; and to expose potential moderators of this relationship, namely organizational support and quality of relationship with supervisors. The extant research on the relationships between person-environment fit and a number of individual- and organization-level outcomes reveals considerable discrepancies, mainly attributed to the measurement of person-environment fit and to potential moderators. With this in mind, moderated multiple regressions (MMR) were conducted in order to test the hypotheses of existing interaction effects.
The results revealed no significant interactions between facets of personenvironment fit and …
Optimal And Heuristic Resource Allocation Policies In Serial Production Systems, Ramesh Arumugam
Optimal And Heuristic Resource Allocation Policies In Serial Production Systems, Ramesh Arumugam
All Theses
We have studied the optimal server allocation policies for a tandem queueing system under different system settings. Motivated by an industry project, we have studied a two stage tandem queueing system with arrival to the system and having two flexible servers capable of working at either of the stations. In our research, we studied the system under two different circumstances: modeling the system to maximize throughput without cost considerations, modeling the system to include switching and holding costs along with revenue for finished goods. In the maximizing throughput scenario, we considered two different types of server allocations: collaborative and non-collaborative. …
Effective Vr: Interplay Of Presence, Perception, Fidelity And Transfer Effects In The Development Of Inspection Training Simulators, Sajay Sadasivan
Effective Vr: Interplay Of Presence, Perception, Fidelity And Transfer Effects In The Development Of Inspection Training Simulators, Sajay Sadasivan
All Dissertations
Increased emphasis on aircraft inspection to ensure aviation safety has resulted in the need for a better trained workforce of aircraft maintenance personnel. Aircraft inspection is mostly visual in nature. Thus it has led to the development of computer simulators to train human inspectors performing the inspection task. However, the lack of immersion and interaction in such simulators has led to limited effectiveness and adoption. Using advances in graphics and virtual reality technology, there is an increase the sense of involvement in using these simulators. Though technology is available to provide higher levels of immersion, it is expensive. It is …

Engineering Management Framework In Support Of Modeling & Simulation Application For Domain Specific Procurement, Thomas Guy Litwin
Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations
A strategic process is desirable for project-based organizations in order for them to be efficient and effective when developing Modeling & Simulation (M&S) systems. This thesis proposes an overarching process that combines traditional M&S and Engineering Management methodologies in a new framework to support M&S organizations during the procurement process.
This thesis proposes both a Strategic Project Management Process (SPMP) and a systems engineering process for M&S federation development projects. The systems engineering process utilizes the artifacts of Model Driven Architecture (MDA) to support building M&S federations driven by operational requirements. Detailed research of this systems engineering process revealed a …
A Confidence Paradigm For Classification Systems, Nathan J. Leap
A Confidence Paradigm For Classification Systems, Nathan J. Leap
Theses and Dissertations
There is no universally accepted methodology to determine how much confidence one should have in a classifier output. This research proposes a framework to determine the level of confidence in an indication from a classifier system where the output is or can be transformed into a posterior probability estimate. This is a theoretical framework that attempts to unite the viewpoints of the classification system developer (or engineer) and the classification system user (or war-fighter). The paradigm is based on the assumptions that the system confidence acts like, or can be modeled as a value and that indication confidence can be …
Combat Identification Using Multiple Tuav Swarm, Younin Kang
Combat Identification Using Multiple Tuav Swarm, Younin Kang
Theses and Dissertations
In modern warfare, Tactical Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (TUAVs) are rapidly taking on a leading role in traditional and non-traditional ISR, to include Automatic Target Recognition (ATR). However, additional advancements in processors and sensors on TUAVs are still needed before they can be widely employed as a primary source for positive identification in the Combat Identification (CID) process. Cost is a driving factor for operating an ATR system using multiple TUAVs. The cost of high quality sensors appropriate for a single TUAV can be significantly higher than less sophisticated sensors suitable for deployment on a group, or swarm, of coordinated TUAVs. …
Service Supply Chain Management : A Hierarchical Decision Modeling Approach, Roger Angel Solano-Cayama
Service Supply Chain Management : A Hierarchical Decision Modeling Approach, Roger Angel Solano-Cayama
Dissertations
A Service Supply Chain (SSC) may be described as a network of service provider facilities (in-house or outsourced), each of which is able to process one or more service tasks on an as needed basis. Two key characteristics of a SSC are (i) the business service is decomposable into several sequential tasks that can be processed by different service providers, and (ii) the primary capacity resource is skilled labor. SSCs are increasingly being developed by companies that experience a high variability of demand for their services (e.g., loan processing, analytical consulting services, emergency repair crews, claims processing, etc.). Typically, the …

Interoperability Measurement, Thomas C. Ford
Theses and Dissertations
This research presents an inaugural general method of measuring the collaborative and confrontational interoperability of a heterogeneous set of systems in the context of an operational process. The method is holistic, fundamental, flexible, and mathematical in nature and accommodates all types of systems and interoperations. The method relates the interoperability measurement to measures of operational effectiveness for confrontational operational processes. Extant leveling methods of describing interoperability are shown to be a special case of the more general method given in this research and the general interoperability measurement method is demonstrated through the presentation of coalition interoperability, suppression of enemy air …
Revenue And Order Management Under Demand Uncertainty, Kiran Chahar
Revenue And Order Management Under Demand Uncertainty, Kiran Chahar
All Dissertations
We consider a firm that delivers its products across several customers or markets, each with unique revenue and uncertain demand size for a single selling season. Given that the firm experiences a long procurement lead time, the firm must decide, far in advance of the selling season not only the markets to be pursued but also the procurement quantity. In this dissertation, we present several operational scenarios in which the firm must decide which customer demands to satisfy, at what level to satisfy each customer demand, and how much to produce (or order) in total.
Traditionally, a newsvendor approach to …
Performance Based Decisions Under Uncertainty And Risk, Sundeep Samson
Performance Based Decisions Under Uncertainty And Risk, Sundeep Samson
All Dissertations
Decision making has became increasingly complex as risky decisions are made in uncertain environments. To minimize risk, the problem of quantifying risk becomes very significant. In our review of the literature, we found a number of different risk measures. A closer study reveals that most of these risk measures define both risk and uncertainty in many different ways.
In this dissertation, we model uncertainty and risk based on the Knightian definition of uncertainty and risk. We propose this alternative modeling paradigm and introduce our decision making methodology by solving an illustrative problem presented by a group of decision makers from …
Modeling Systems For Optimal Resource Allocation, Scheduling, And Decision Making, Esengul Tayfur
Modeling Systems For Optimal Resource Allocation, Scheduling, And Decision Making, Esengul Tayfur
All Dissertations
This dissertation focuses on the resource requirements and scheduling problem for logistic systems. We investigate solutions to this problem in two different logistic systems: logistic system of the health care facilities during emergency evacuations and delivery and distribution system of production industries. All hospitals must have an evacuation plan to ensure the safety of patients and prevent the loss of life. However, hospital operators have not been able to quantify how resource availability, the cost of acquiring those resources, and evacuation completion time are related. This research addresses this problem and contributes two methodologies to solve this problem. In the …

Metamodeling Techniques To Aid In The Aggregation Process Of Large Hierarchical Simulation Models, June F.D. Rodriguez
Metamodeling Techniques To Aid In The Aggregation Process Of Large Hierarchical Simulation Models, June F.D. Rodriguez
Theses and Dissertations
This research investigates how aggregation is currently conducted for simulation of large systems. The purpose is to examine how to achieve suitable aggregation in the simulation of large systems. More specifically, investigating how to accurately aggregate hierarchical lower-level (higher resolution) models into the next higher-level in order to reduce the complexity of the overall simulation model. The focus is on the exploration of the different aggregation techniques for hierarchical lower-level (higher resolution) models into the next higher-level. We develop aggregation procedures between two simulation levels (e.g., aggregation of engagement level models into a mission level model) to address how much …
Investigation Of A Photosynthetically Aerated Cathode In A Mfc, Derek Little
Investigation Of A Photosynthetically Aerated Cathode In A Mfc, Derek Little
All Theses
A microbial fuel cell (MFC) creates an environment that facilitates the conversion of electron donor compounds into electrical current through the oxidizing powers of microbial growth. Within the anode of a MFC bacteria grow oxidizing organic compounds while in the cathode oxygen is reduced. The goal of a MFC is to achieve respiration under anaerobic conditions having electrodes serve as intermediate electron acceptor for bacteria in the anode and shuttle electrons through a circuit to the cathode reducing a terminal electron acceptor.
Waste from the biological production of hydrogen from agricultural peach was explored for use within the anode of …
Biology-Inspired Approach For Communal Behavior In Massively Deployed Sensor Networks, Kennie H. Jones
Biology-Inspired Approach For Communal Behavior In Massively Deployed Sensor Networks, Kennie H. Jones
Computer Science Theses & Dissertations
Research in wireless sensor networks has accelerated rapidly in recent years. The promise of ubiquitous control of the physical environment opens the way for new applications that will redefine the way we live and work. Due to the small size and low cost of sensor devices, visionaries promise smart systems enabled by deployment of massive numbers of sensors working in concert. To date, most of the research effort has concentrated on forming ad hoc networks under centralized control, which is not scalable to massive deployments. This thesis proposes an alternative approach based on models inspired by biological systems and reports …

Developing A Decision Model For Joint Improvised Explosive Device Defeat Organization (Jieddo) Proposal Selection, Lyle M. Dawley, Lenore A. Marentee, Alice Marie Long
Theses and Dissertations
This research uses decision analysis to develop a structured, repeatable and most importantly defensible decision model for the evaluation of proposed IED defeat solutions submitted to the Joint IED Defeat Organization (JIEDDO). Additive value models using Value-Focused Thinking (VFT) and the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) are examined as possible methodologies. VFT is determined to be the "best fit" for JIEDDO's decision situation in which proposals are submitted continuously and must be scored independently of previous proposals. VFT is first used to determine desirable qualities in IED defeat options, and then to generate a hierarchal value model to evaluate these qualities …
Forecasting Flying Hour Costs Of The B-1, B-2, And B-52 Bomber Aircraft, Stefanie L. Van Dyk
Forecasting Flying Hour Costs Of The B-1, B-2, And B-52 Bomber Aircraft, Stefanie L. Van Dyk
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis both evaluates, and presents improvements to, the current method of forecasting flying costs of Air Force aircraft. It uses depot level repairable (DLR) and consumable (CONS) data for the Air Force's bomber platforms: B-1B, B-2, and B-52H. The current forecasting method assumes a proportional relationship between costs and flying hours such that 1) when no hours are flown costs are zero, and 2) a 1% increase in flying hours will increase costs by 1%. The findings of this research indicate that applying log-linear ordinary least squares regression techniques may be an improved fit of flying cost data over …

Operationally Responsive Space (Ors): An Architecture And Enterprise Model For Adaptive Integration, Test And Logistics, Jeff A. Alexander, Martha Charles-Vickers, Talbot L. Smith, Michael L. Vickers
Theses and Dissertations
The capability to rapidly deploy tactical satellites to meet a Joint Force Commander's immediate battlespace requirements is a well-documented joint capability need. Key U.S. strategic documentation cites the need for the capability to maintain persistent surveillance or an "unblinking eye" over battlespace and to rapidly reconstitute critical space capabilities to preserve situational awareness. The warfighter requires a tactical space-based deployment capability which employs a request to launch and operational deployment window of 90 to 120 days. This master's thesis executed two (2) major areas of work: apply, and reinforce the Operationally Responsive Space (ORS) mission tasks using the Joint Capabilities …
Analyzing Individual Decision Making Versus Group Decision Making For Alternative Selection, Alper Gezeravci
Analyzing Individual Decision Making Versus Group Decision Making For Alternative Selection, Alper Gezeravci
Theses and Dissertations
Many "real world" decisions are made by groups. It is rare that the responsi- bility for a very important decision is given to a single decision maker with complete authority. Group decision making adds both advantages to the process as well as disadvantages. This research examines the question: "Are decisions made by groups really that much different from the decisions made by individuals in the group?" A specific case study involving the selection of the best primary training aircraft type for military pilot training is used to examine this question. Fifteen military pilots with various backgrounds and experience levels participate …
Modeling Inventory And Responsiveness Costs In A Supply Chain, Robert Nearier
Modeling Inventory And Responsiveness Costs In A Supply Chain, Robert Nearier
Dissertations
Evaluation of supply chain performance is often complicated by the various interrelationships that exist within the network of suppliers. Currently many supply chain metrics cannot be analytically determined. Instead, metrics are derived from monitoring historical data, which is commonly referred to as Supply Chain Analytics. With these analytics it is possible to answer questions such as: What is the inventory cost distribution across the chain? What is the actual inventory turnover ratio? What is the cost of demand changes to individual suppliers? However, this approach requires a significant amount of historical data which must be continuously extracted from the associated …

With the growing trend for greater product variety, mixed-model assembly nowadays is commonly employed in many industries, which can enable just-in-time production for a production system with high variety. Efficient production scheduling and sequencing is important to achieve the overall material supply, production, and distribution efficiency around the mixed-model assembly line. This research addresses production scheduling and sequencing on a mixed-model assembly line for products with multiple product options, considering multiple objectives with regard to material supply, manufacturing, and product distribution. This research also addresses plant assignment for a product with multiple product options as a prior step to scheduling …
Optimal Fleet Size Of An Integrated Production And Distribution Scheduling Problem For A Single Perishable Product, Priyantha Devapriya
Optimal Fleet Size Of An Integrated Production And Distribution Scheduling Problem For A Single Perishable Product, Priyantha Devapriya
All Dissertations
This dissertation focuses on a practical production problem in which a perishable product must be produced and distributed at minimum cost. The problem has some features of the integrated production and distribution scheduling problem in that we seek to determine the fleet size and their routes subject to a planning horizon constraint but there are significant differences as well. In particular, this research differs because the product has a limited lifetime, the total demand must be satisfied within a planning horizon, multiple trucks can be used, and the production schedule and the distribution sequence are considered. Two mixed integer programming …
