This paper presents methods for the rapid manufacturing of replacement bone fragments using a Subtractive Rapid Prototyping process called CNC-RP. The geometry of segmental defects in bone, resulting from traumatic injury or cancerous tumor resection, can be reverse-engineered working from medical images (such as CT scans), and then accurate defect fillers can be automatically generated in advanced synthetic biomaterials and other bioactive/biocompatible materials. The research provides evidence that suitable bone geometries can be created using subtractive RP from a variety of materials including Trabecular Metal® (porous tantalum), polymers, ceramics, and actual bone allografts. While traditional international exchange programs provide valuable experience for engineering students, they are neither within reach nor practical for all students. An innovative course was developed and executed Spring 2007 to provide engineering students with an intense international experience. This course is aimed at strengthening ABET outcome item (h) [the broad education necessary to understand the impact of engineering solutions in a global, economic, environmental, and societal context]. This paper presents the foundation for a collaborative Web-based environment for improving communication by formally defining a platform for documentation and sharing of engineering design knowledge throughout the entire design process. In this work an ontological structure is utilized to concisely define a set of individual engineering concepts. This set of modular ontologies link together to create a flexible, yet consistent, product development knowledge-base. During a lifting task the movement of the trunk can account for the majority of the external moment about the ankle. Though the angle of trunk flexion and the external moment about the ankles are roughly correlated, this correlation can be reduced by various segmental dynamics and momentums with the upper/lower extremities. Two methods are proposed in this technical note for describing the relationship between the kinematics and the kinetics of a lifting motion.
