Development Of A Multidisciplinary Engineering Foundation Spiral, Samuel Bogan Daniels, Bouzid Aliane, Jean Nocito-Gobel, Michael Collura

Engineering and Applied Science Education Faculty Publications

To operate effectively in today’s workforce engineers need to have a muti-disciplinary perspective along with substantial disciplinary depth. This broad perspective cannot be achieved by merely taking 2 or 3 engineering courses outside of the major, but rather will require a radical change in the way we educate engineers. The faculty of the School of Engineering and Applied Science at the University of New Haven have developed a new approach: the Multidisciplinary Engineering Foundation Spiral. This curricular model provides the needed mix of breadth and depth, along with the desired professional skills, by providing carefully crafted, well-coordinated curricular experiences in …

Yucca Mountain Ventilation Studies Support And Associated Code Enhancements, George Danko Mar 2002

Yucca Mountain Ventilation Studies Support And Associated Code Enhancements, George Danko

Publications (YM)

The Task 20 project was prematurely closed by DOE on the basis of becoming critical data to the Yucca Mountain project. Task 20 indeed delivered the first, published hydrothermal-ventilation model, MULTIFLUX V1.0 and V1.1 to BSC during 2001 to support the AMR Rev01 report. The numerical model is designed to predict temperature and humidity distributions in and around the emplacement drifts and on the waste packages stored in a ventilated, high-level nuclear waste repository.

Hands-On Structural Engineering Experiences With The "Anex" Mini-Laboratory, Richard A. Behr, Colin Othniel Benjamin, Azam A. Mirza Dec 1992

Hands-On Structural Engineering Experiences With The "Anex" Mini-Laboratory, Richard A. Behr, Colin Othniel Benjamin, Azam A. Mirza

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The ANEX facility has been developed to allow nearly real-time comparisons of analysis results with experimental data gathered on small-scale structural models. ANEX has been used successfully for in-class demonstrations, student-designed experiments, and comprehensive design/build competitions in an introductory structural analysis course at the University of Missouri-Rolla. An expert system is now being developed to guide ANEX users and to act as a trouble-shooter and advisor in the event that analytical and experimental results do not correlate acceptably well. ANEX, using only simple, small-scale model structures, is able to enrich structural engineering instruction by introducing students to the sophisticated capabilities …

Knowledge-Based Prototype For Improving Scheduling Productivity, Colin Othniel Benjamin, Daniel L. Babcock, N. B. Yunus, John B. Kincaid Jan 1990

Knowledge-Based Prototype For Improving Scheduling Productivity, Colin Othniel Benjamin, Daniel L. Babcock, N. B. Yunus, John B. Kincaid

Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The development of efficient construction plans and schedules presents continuing challenges to construction schedulers. Knowledge-based systems offer considerable potential as computer-based planning tools to aid the development of realistic project plans and schedules. This paper outlines the development of a knowledge-based prototype system for construction planning and scheduling and evaluates its effectiveness as a tool for improving the productivity of inexperienced construction project schedulers. The prototype, developed using the M.1 knowledge engineering shell, incorporates data bases, algorithm, and heuristics that mimic the decision process of expert construction project schedulers and identifies a work breakdown structure and precedence relationships. Inexperienced schedulers …

5th Annual Umr-Dnr Conference On Energy -- Entire Proceedings, University Of Missouri--Rolla

UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy

This volume is a collection of refereed papers presented at the Fifth Annual UMR-DNR Conference on Energy held at the University of Missouri--Rolla on the dates of October 10 - 12, 1978.

Guided by the President's goal of energy independence by 1980, the UMR-DNR Conference on Energy organized in 1974 with the purpose of providing social scientists, scientists and engineers a means for rapid communication of their most recent research results in the field of energy and to offer solutions to the energy related problems of local government, business, industry and the general public. Since that time, there has been …

Dickey-Lincoln School Lakes Project Transmission Studies Environmental Impact Statement: Appendix B: Alternative Power Transmission Corridors, United States Department Of Energy, United States Department Of The Interior Jan 1978

Dickey-Lincoln School Lakes Project Transmission Studies Environmental Impact Statement: Appendix B: Alternative Power Transmission Corridors, United States Department Of Energy, United States Department Of The Interior

Dickey-Lincoln School Lakes Project

This report identifies alternative corridors of land within which transmission lines could be routed and details various impacts on the environment which would be associated with introduction of transmission facilities. Many alternative corridor locations were identified (see Figure 1-1). Identification of these alternative transmission corridors was a complex process, since the number of potential corridors capable of connecting the various substations was myriad; the 'least desirable' potential corridors, i.e., those where transmission facilities might have entailed severest impacts on the environment, had to be eliminated from consideration before alternative corridors could be delineated. Identified alternative corridor locations were subsequently evaluated …

Dickey-Lincoln School Lakes Project Environmental Impact Statement: Appendix H: Noise Impact Assessment, Stone & Webster Engineering Corporation, New England Division, United States Army Engineer Division

Dickey-Lincoln School Lakes Project

The overall project area can be described as a very quiet natural area remote from any major industrial activity, but subject to high traffic noise levels along the main road. Noise sensitive areas consist of low density residential areas in the villages and widely spaced residences along the main road. The estimated yearly average Ldn for all noise sensitive areas 1s 60 dB due to the close proximity of traffic to all residences. The yearly average Ldn decreases to 40 dB at 600 ft from the main road, and to 30 dB 1n the timberland areas.

Test Of High-Speed Engine, William Frazier Owen Jan 1899

Test Of High-Speed Engine, William Frazier Owen

Student and Lippitt Prize essays

Discusses the best ways in which a steam engine can function by using measurements from an actual steam engine. The essay ultimately determines that a steam engine is at its highest efficiency when carrying the largest load possible.
