Sakdirat Kaewunruen

Railway urban turnout is a special track system used to divert a train from a particular direction or a particular track onto other directions or other tracks. It is a structural grillage system that consists of steel rails, points (or called “switches”), crossings, steel plates, rubber pads, insulators, fasteners, screw spikes, beam bearers (either tim- ber, polymer, steel, or concrete), ballast and formation. There are two types of turnouts, a conventional turnout and a tangential turnout. Standard conventional turnouts are designed typically for straight main line track. The combination of switch length, heel angle, and cross rate defines the turnout ...

Mohammadsadegh Mobin

Identifying critical risks in projects has become a core step in project risk management process; however, the nature of this step can be complex and unstructured, suggesting a benefit in research towards prioritizing project risks on the basis of a cogent method. This paper presents a Gray Decision Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory (GDEMATEL) method for prioritizing sources of project risk within a multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) framework. The framework categorizes sources of risk via the Project Management Institutes’ (PMI) Risk Breakdown Structure (RBS). For this study, project expert judgments and preferences are the source of knowledge about project risk ...

Global Sensitivity Analysis Applied To Model Inversion Problems: A Contribution To Rail Condition Monitoring, René Schenkendorf, Jörn Groos

René Schenkendorf

Rising demands on railroad infrastructure operator by means of profitability and punctuality call for advanced concepts of Prognostics and Health Management. Condition based preventive maintenance aims at strengthening the rail mode of transport through an optimized scheduling of maintenance actions based on the actual and prognosticated infrastructure condition, respectively. When applying model-based algorithms within the framework of Prognostics and Health Management unknown model parameters have to be identified first. Which of these parameters should be known as precisely as possible can be figured out systematically by a sensitivity analysis. A comprehensive global sensitivity analysis, however, might be prohibitive by means ...

Mohammadsadegh Mobin

Control charts are widely used in industry to establish and maintain statistical control of a process for quality improvement. Economic use of a control chart calls for designing the optimal parameters for sample size, sampling frequency, and the control limits for the chart. This paper investigates the X-bar control chart design through a two-stage multi-objective optimization process. The multi-objective formulation reflects the multiple objective needs in designing an X-bar control chart. For example, these objectives may include average run length when in statistical control, the type-I error, and the detection power. The optimization process first searches the Pareto Frontiers using ...

Horizontal Well’S Path Planning: An Optimal Switching Control, Zhaohua Gong, Kok Lay Teo, Chongyang Liu, Enmin Feng

Chongyang Liu

In this paper, we consider a three-dimensional horizontal well’s path planning problem, where the well’s path evolves as a combination of several constant-curvature smooth turn segments. The problem is formulated as an optimal switching control problem subject to continuous state inequality constraints. By applying the time-scaling transformation and constraint transcription in conjunction with local smooth approximation technique, the optimal switching control problem is approximated by a sequence of optimal parameter selection problems with only box constraints, each of which is solvable by gradient-based optimization techniques. The optimal path planning problems of the wells Ci-16-Cp146 and Jin27 in Liaohe ...
