Calculation And Tabulation Of Efficiencies For Tungsten Foil Positron Moderators, R. Alsulami, M. Albarqi, S. Jaradat, Shoaib Usman, Joseph T. Graham

Shoaib Usman

Monte Carlo radiation transport simulations were used to calculate the positron stopping profiles in tungsten positron moderator foils. Stopping profiles were numerically integrated with efficiency kernels derived from Green's function solutions of the 3D diffusion equation to determine the moderation efficiency in both the backscattering and transmission geometries. Stopping profiles and efficiencies were calculated for positron energies from 10 keV to 10 MeV and incident angles from 0° to 75°. The resulting efficiencies agreed with other calculated and measured values in the literature, especially when similar values of the positron diffusion length and surface emission branching ratio were used ...

Temperature Measurements During High Flux Ion Beam Irradiations, M. L. Crespillo, Joseph T. Graham, Y. Zhang, W. J. Weber

Joseph T. Graham

A systematic study of the ion beam heating effect was performed in a temperature range of -170 to 900 °C using a 10 MeV Au3+ ion beam and a Yttria stabilized Zirconia (YSZ) sample at a flux of 5.5 x 1012 cm-2 s-1. Different geometric configurations of beam, sample, thermocouple positioning, and sample holder were compared to understand the heat/charge transport mechanisms responsible for the observed temperature increase. The beam heating exhibited a strong dependence on the background (initial) sample temperature with the largest temperature increases occurring at cryogenic temperatures and decreasing with increasing ...

Neutron Irradiation Effects On Domain Wall Mobility And Reversibility In Lead Zirconate Titanate Thin Films, Joseph T. Graham, Geoff L. Brennecka, Paulo Ferreira, Leo Small, David Duquette, Christopher Apblett, Sheldon Landsberger, Jon F. Ihlefeld Feb 2019

Neutron Irradiation Effects On Domain Wall Mobility And Reversibility In Lead Zirconate Titanate Thin Films, Joseph T. Graham, Geoff L. Brennecka, Paulo Ferreira, Leo Small, David Duquette, Christopher Apblett, Sheldon Landsberger, Jon F. Ihlefeld

Joseph T. Graham

The effects of neutron-induced damage on the ferroelectric properties of thin film lead zirconate titanate (PZT) were investigated. Two sets of PbZr0.52Ti0.48O3 films of varying initial quality were irradiated in a research nuclear reactor up to a maximum 1 MeV equivalent neutron fluence of (5.16± 0.03) x 1015 cm-2. Changes in domain wall mobility and reversibility were characterized by polarization-electric field measurements, Rayleigh analysis, and analysis of first order reversal curves (FORC). With increasing fluence, extrinsic contributions to the small-signal permittivity diminished. Additionally, redistribution of irreversible hysterons towards higher ...

Crystallographic Changes In Lead Zirconate Titanate Due To Neutron Irradiation, Alexandra Henriques, Joseph T. Graham, Sheldon Landsberger, Jon F. Ihlefeld, Geoff L. Brennecka, Donald W. Brown, Jennifer S. Forrester, Jacob L. Jones Feb 2019

Crystallographic Changes In Lead Zirconate Titanate Due To Neutron Irradiation, Alexandra Henriques, Joseph T. Graham, Sheldon Landsberger, Jon F. Ihlefeld, Geoff L. Brennecka, Donald W. Brown, Jennifer S. Forrester, Jacob L. Jones

Joseph T. Graham

Piezoelectric and ferroelectric materials are useful as the active element in non-destructive monitoring devices for high-radiation areas. Here, crystallographic structural refinement (i.e., the Rietveld method) is used to quantify the type and extent of structural changes in PbZr0.5Ti0.5O3 after exposure to a 1 MeV equivalent neutron fluence of 1.7x1015 neutrons/cm2. The results showa measurable decrease in the occupancy of Pb and O due to irradiation, with O vacancies in the tetragonal phase being created preferentially on one of the two O sites. The results demonstrate a method by ...

The use of additional spectral filtration for dual-energy (DE) imaging using a dual-source CT (DSCT) system was investigated and its effect on the material-specific DEratio was evaluated for several clinically relevant materials. The x-ray spectra, data acquisition, and reconstruction processes for a DSCT system (Siemens Definition) were simulated using information provided by the system manufacturer, resulting in virtual DE images. The factory-installed filtration for the 80 kV spectrum was left unchanged to avoid any further reductions in tube output, and only the filtration for the high-energy spectrum was modified. Only practical single-element filter materials within the atomic number range of ...

Nuclear Insurance Subsidies Cost From Post-Fukushima Accounting Based On Media Sources, John Laureto, Joshua M. Pearce May 2017

Nuclear Insurance Subsidies Cost From Post-Fukushima Accounting Based On Media Sources, John Laureto, Joshua M. Pearce

Joshua M. Pearce

Quantification of nuclear liability insurance is difficult without arbitrary liability caps; however, post-mortem calculations can be used to calculate insurance costs. This study analyzes the Fukushima (Daiichi) nuclear power plant disaster to quantify the cost per unit electricity ($/kWh) of nuclear energy from the lifetime of the plant after accounting for the true cost of the liability needed to cover the damages from the nuclear disaster determined from news reports. These costs are then compared to the cost of electricity currently paid by Japanese consumers, and then are aggregated to determine the indirect subsidy for nuclear power providers in both ...

Novel Integrated Solar-Nuclear Combined Cycle Power Plant, Nima Fathi, Patrick Mckdaniel, Seyed Sobhan Aleyasin, Matthew Robinson, Peter Vorobieff, Salvador Rodriguez, Cassiano De Oliveira Feb 2016

Novel Integrated Solar-Nuclear Combined Cycle Power Plant, Nima Fathi, Patrick Mckdaniel, Seyed Sobhan Aleyasin, Matthew Robinson, Peter Vorobieff, Salvador Rodriguez, Cassiano De Oliveira

Nima Fathi

Rather than dumping the waste heat rejected by a nuclear power plant to a wet cooling tower, a better solution may be to connect it to a solar chimney power plant system (SCPPS). This is particularly true in arid regions. The SCPPS serves the function of a dry cooling tower but also produces additional electrical power. In a solar chimney power plant, the energy of buoyant hot air is converted to electrical energy. This solar power plant includes a collector at ground level, covered with a transparent roof that collects the solar radiation, heating the air inside and the ground ...

Effect Of Nano-Oxide Particle Size On Radiation Resistance Of Ironechromium Alloys, Weizong Xu, Lulu Li, James A. Valdez, Mostafa Saber, Yuntian Zhu, Carl C. Koch, Ronald O. Scattergood Feb 2016

Effect Of Nano-Oxide Particle Size On Radiation Resistance Of Ironechromium Alloys, Weizong Xu, Lulu Li, James A. Valdez, Mostafa Saber, Yuntian Zhu, Carl C. Koch, Ronald O. Scattergood

Mostafa Saber

Radiation resistance of Fe-14Cr alloys under 200 keV He irradiation at 500 *C was systematically investigated with varying sizes of nano oxide Zr, Hf and Cr particles. It is found that these nano oxide particles acted as effective sites for He bubble formation. By statistically analyzing 700-1500 He bubbles at the depth of about 150-700 nm from a series of HRTEM images for each sample, we established the variation of average He bubble size, He bubble density, and swelling percentage along the depth, and found them to be consistent with the He concentration profile calculated from the SIRM program. Oxide ...

Developing Professional Skills In Stem Students: Data Information Literacy, Lisa Zilinski, Megan R. Sapp Nelson, Amy S. Van Epps

Lisa Zilinski

Undergraduate STEM students are increasingly expected to have some data use skills upon graduation, whether they pursue post-graduate education or move into industry. This project was an initial foray into the application of data information literacy competencies to training undergraduate students to identify markers of data and information quality. The data consumer training appeared within two courses to help students evaluate data objects, including databases and datasets available on the Internet. The application of the Data Credibility Checklist provides a foundation for developing data reuse competencies. Based upon the initial presentation of the content, it became obvious that students need ...

Characterization Of Two Ods Alloys: 18cr Ods And 9cr Ods, Julianne Goddard Jan 2014

Characterization Of Two Ods Alloys: 18cr Ods And 9cr Ods, Julianne Goddard

Julianne Goddard

ODS alloys, or oxide dispersion strengthened alloys, are made from elemental or pre-alloyed metal powders mechanically alloyed with oxide powders in a high-energy attributor mill, and then consolidated by either hot isostatic pressing or hot extrusion causing the production of nanometer scale oxide and carbide particles within the alloy matrix; crystalline properties such as creep strength, ductility, corrosion resistance, tensile strength, swelling resistance, and resistance to embrittlement are all observed to be improved by the presence of nanoparticles in the matrix. The presented research uses various methods to observe and characterize the microstructural and microchemical properties of two experimental ODS ...

Wireless Transmission Network : A Imagine, Radhey Shyam Meena Engineer, Neeraj Kumar Garg Asst.Prof Apr 2013

Wireless Transmission Network : A Imagine, Radhey Shyam Meena Engineer, Neeraj Kumar Garg Asst.Prof

Radhey Shyam Meena

World cannot be imagined without electrical power. Generally the power is transmitted through transmission networks. This paper describes an original idea to eradicate the hazardous usage of electrical wires which involve lot of confusion in particularly organizing them. Imagine a future in which wireless power transfer is feasible: cell phones, household robots, mp3 players, laptop computers and other portable electronic devices capable of charging themselves without ever being plugged in freeing us from that final ubiquitous power wire. This paper includes the techniques of transmitting power without using wires with an efficiency of about 95% with non-radioactivemethods. In this paper ...

Battery Energy Storage System In Solar Power Generation, Radhey Shyam Meena Er., Deepa Sharma

Radhey Shyam Meena

Grid-connected solar PV dramatically changes the load profile of an electric utility customer. The expected widespread adoption of solar generation by customers on the distribution system poses significant challenges to system operators both in transient and steady state operation, from issues including voltage swings, sudden weather-induced changes in generation, and legacy protective devices designed with one-way power flow in mind

Battery Energy Storage System In Solar Power Generation, Radhey Shyam Meena Er. Jan 2013

Battery Energy Storage System In Solar Power Generation, Radhey Shyam Meena Er.

Radhey Shyam Meena

As solar photovoltaic power generation becomes more commonplace, the inherent intermittency of the solar resource poses one of the great challenges to those who would design and implement the next generation smart grid. Specifically, grid-tied solar power generation is a distributed resource whose output can change extremely rapidly, resulting in many issues for the distribution system operator with a large quantity of installed photovoltaic devices. Battery energy storage systems are increasingly being used to help integrate solar power into the grid. These systems are capable of absorbing and delivering both real and reactive power with sub-second response times. With these ...

Challenges And Prospects Of Processes Utilising Carbonic Anhydrase For Co2 Separation, Patrycja Szeligiewicz, Wojciech M. Budzianowski Jan 2013

Challenges And Prospects Of Processes Utilising Carbonic Anhydrase For Co2 Separation, Patrycja Szeligiewicz, Wojciech M. Budzianowski

Wojciech Budzianowski

This article provides an analysis of processes for separation CO2 by using carbonic anhydrase enzyme with particular emphasis on reactive-membrane solutions. Three available processes are characterised. Main challenges and prospects are given. It is found that in view of numerous challenges practical applications of these processes will be difficult in near future. Further research is therefore needed for improving existing processes through finding methods for eliminating their main drawbacks such as short lifetime of carbonic anhydrase or low resistance of reactive membrane systems to impurities contained in flue gases from power plants.
