Dynamics Modeling Of Molten Salt Reactors, Visura Umesh Pathirana
Doctoral Dissertations
The abundance of energy is a necessity for the prosperity of humans. The rise in energy demand has created energy shortages and issues related to energy security. Nuclear energy can produce vast amounts of reliable energy without many of the negative externalities associated with other competing energy sources, such as coal and natural gas. As a result, public interest in nuclear power has increased in the past decade. Many new types of nuclear reactor are proposed. These nuclear reactor designs feature many passive technologies that can operate without external influence. Reactors that feature advanced passive safety features are catagorized as …

Nuclear Engineering ETDs
Heavy metals and alkali Liquid Metals are suitable coolants for Generation IV terrestrial nuclear reactors for operating at elevated temperatures for achieving plant thermal efficiency more than 40% and the thermochemical generation of hydrogen fuel. In addition, the low vapor pressure of these liquids eliminates the need for a pressure vessel and instead operates slightly below ambient pressure. A primary issue with the uses of these coolants is their compatibility with nuclear fuel, cladding and core structure materials at elevated temperatures more than 500oC. Therefore, in pile and out-of-pile test loops have been constructed or being considered for quantifying the …

Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering Publications
A new process is reported for the incorporation of a fluoropolymer into a solid perovskite film. Poly(trifluoroethyl methacrylate) [CH2C(CH3)(CO2CH2CF3)]n was delivered to methylammonium lead iodide (CH3NH3PbI3) perovskite films by crystallizing the film in supercritical carbon dioxide/ethanol containing the dissolved fluoropolymer. The surface was characterized before and after fluoropolymer exposure using scanning electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and contact angle measurements. The results indicate that the fluoropolymer was incorporated into the perovskite film during the supercritical fluid crystallization process. The incorporation of a hydrophobic fluoropolymer …
Enhancements To Nuclear Thermal Propulsion Rockets, Kimberly Gonzalez
Enhancements To Nuclear Thermal Propulsion Rockets, Kimberly Gonzalez
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Nuclear thermal rocket propulsion has been proposed as a highly efficient technology for space vehicles traveling from earth orbit to the moon, Mars, and other locations in the solar system. With twice the performance of a chemical rocket, nuclear thermal propulsion (NTP) uses the thrust produced by heating hydrogen gas within a thermal nuclear reactor where the exhaust is then passed through a de Laval nozzle to produce supersonic flow. NTP engines were the subject ofthe NERVA experiments at the Nevada Test Site in the 1970’s, and they produced a specific impulse of up to 900 seconds which is almost …

Phase Change Temperature Sensor For High Radiation Environment: Material, Additive Technology And Structure Development, Al Amin Ahmed Simon
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Performance of any sensor in a nuclear reactor involves reliable operation under a harsh environment (i.e., high temperature, neutron irradiation, and a high dose of ionizing radiation). In this environment, accurate and continuous monitoring of temperature is critical for the reactor's stability and proper functionality. Furthermore, during the development and testing stages of new materials and structural components for these systems, it is imperative to collect in-situ measurement data about the exact test conditions for real-time analysis of their performance. To meet the compelling need of such sensing devices, we propose radiation-hard temperature sensors based on the phase change phenomenon …

Solid State Synthesis And Characterization Of Apatite Based Ceramic Waste Form For The Immobilization Of Radioactive Iodine, Md Imdadul Islam
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The growing demand for nuclear power in the United States and worldwide is accountable for addressing the major concern of radioactive waste, involving the technical challenges of maintaining the nuclear fuel cycle and immobilizing high-level wastes for safe disposal in geological storage. The appropriate selection of waste forms for spent nuclear fuel such as fission products and radionuclides can be effective means for a feasible and sustainable nuclear fuel cycle. But highly volatile radionuclides such as iodine (129) are of specific concern due to its extraordinary long half-life (15.7 million years). Due to its poor solubility and high volatility at …
Equations Of State For Warm Dense Carbon From Quantum Espresso, Derek J. Schauss
Equations Of State For Warm Dense Carbon From Quantum Espresso, Derek J. Schauss
Theses and Dissertations
Warm dense plasma is the matter that exists, roughly, in the range of 10,000 to 10,000,000 Kelvin and has solid-like densities, typically between 0.1 and 10 grams per centimeter. Warm dense fluids like hydrogen, helium, and carbon are believed to make up the interiors of many planets, white dwarfs, and other stars in our universe. The existence of warm dense matter (WDM) on Earth, however, is very rare, as it can only be created with high-energy sources like a nuclear explosion. In such an event, theoretical and computational models that accurately predict the response of certain materials are thus very …
A Method For Developing And Testing Nuclear Reactor Systems With Space Applications And Improving Performance Of Heat Pipe Reactor Systems, David Duff Dixon
A Method For Developing And Testing Nuclear Reactor Systems With Space Applications And Improving Performance Of Heat Pipe Reactor Systems, David Duff Dixon
Doctoral Dissertations
The concept of using nuclear reactor technology in propulsion systems is nearly as old as nuclear reactors themselves. Numerous publications, many at very primitive conceptual levels, suggested nuclear propulsion in the 1940s. Since then, numerous attempts have been made to build and fly a nuclear rocket, yet there have been no such systems advanced to the point of a system test in more than half a century.
This dissertation presents an approach to reactor system development, a testing approach developed by the author that resulted in the operation of the world’s first heat pipe reactor system, and the world’s first …

The exo-atmospheric detonation of nuclear device would be of great impact on the material integrity of orbiting satellites. The spectral energy distribution of high intensity X-ray flux, ~10 28 -10 35 photons/(cm 2 ∙s), originating from a nuclear blast is described by the Planck's blackbody function with the temperature from 0.1 keV to 10 keV. Particular damage would occur to the multi-layered, solar cell panels of satellites. However, the X-ray …

Background: The establishment of in vivo, patient-specific, and regionally resolved techniques to quantify aortic properties is key for improving risk assessment in clinical practice and scientific understanding of cardiovascular growth and remodeling. Many in vivo studies quantify vascular stiffness using Pulse Wave Velocity. This method provides an averaged measure of stiffness for the entire aorta, ignoring variations in wall stiffness and boundary conditions. Previous studies using Displacement Encoding with Stimulated Echoes Magnetic Resonance Imaging (DENSE-MRI) suggested that the infrarenal abdominal aorta (IAA) deforms heterogeneously throughout the cardiac cycle.
Method: Herein, we hypothesize that the aortic wall strain heterogeneity is driven …

BACKGROUND: Engineered tissues are an exciting potential source of small diameter vascular grafts due to limited supply and patency of available alternatives. Engineered tissue vascular grafts (ETVGs) will provide physiological function that resembles native arteries and maintain the required mechanical properties as they integrate with host tissue. Mechanical stimulation during incubation encourages proper cell alignment and increases extracellular matrix deposition. The enhanced organization of the engineered tissue leads to improved compliance over synthetic alternatives without sacrificing strength and may lead to better integration in vivo.
METHODS: We have developed a bioreactor that mechanically trains grafts during incubation. To test the …
Evaluating The Effectiveness Of Aerospace Materials, Vehicle Shape And Astronaut Position At Lowering The Whole Body Effective Dose Equivalent In Deep Space, Daniel K. Bond
Theses and Dissertations
As future crewed, deep space missions are being planned, it is important to assess how spacecraft design can be used to minimize radiation exposure. Collectively with shielding material, vehicle shape and astronaut position must be used to protect astronauts from the two primary sources of space radiation: Galactic Cosmic Rays (GCR) and Solar Particle Events (SPE). GCRs, which are composed of low intensity, highly energetic, and fully ionized stable and meta-stable isotopes, are considered a chronic source of radiation risk to the astronauts. SPEs, which originate from solar coronal mass ejections, are composed mostly of high intensity protons that can …

Multi-Grid Acceleration Scheme For Neutron Transport Calculations Using Optimally Diffusive Cmfd Method, Lakshay Jain, Ramamoorthy Karthikeyan, Umasankari Kannan
Symposium on Advanced Sensors and Modeling Techniques for Nuclear Reactor Safety
Method of characteristics (MOC) is one of the most efficient deterministic techniques for high fidelity neutronic analysis of complex and heterogeneous reactor problems. However, the conventional MOC inner-outer iteration scheme suffers from poor convergence speeds for problems with large scattering to transport cross-section ratio and/or large dominance ratio. This creates a serious hindrance for its effective application to realistic reactor problems. A High Order – Low Order (HO-LO) multi-grid scheme using optimally diffusive coarse mesh finite difference (odCMFD) method has been introduced for improving the performance of code DIAMOND, an assembly level neutronic analysis code based on MOC and unstructured …

Xenon Dynamics Of Ahwr, Arindam Chakraborty, Baltej Singh
Symposium on Advanced Sensors and Modeling Techniques for Nuclear Reactor Safety
Large core reactors where the core dimension is significantly large compared to the migration length of neutron are more susceptible to xenon instability due to local perturbations. Advanced Heavy Water Reactor (AHWR) is being designed for on-power refueling. Therefore, refueling or movement of control devices in AHWR causes local perturbation. Preliminary modal analysis of AHWR equilibrium core also showed that the eigenvalue separation between fundamental mode and 1st azimuthal mode is small indicating its susceptibility to xenon oscillation in azimuthal plane. Therefore, xenon dynamic studies for AHWR with explicit xenon calculations were carried out using diffusion theory based computer code …

Heavy Water Concentration Measurement In Air, A. Gupta, D. V. Uduapa, A. Topkar, A. K. Mohanty
Symposium on Advanced Sensors and Modeling Techniques for Nuclear Reactor Safety
The heavy water in PHWRs flows at high temperature and pressure, hence leaks in the heat transport system are not uncommon. The loss of heavy water due to such leaks can lead to spreading of radioactivity and it also contributes to operating cost of the nuclear reactor. It is advantageous to detect small leaks, because if remains undetected, they may develop into a severe leak, which may lead to reactor shutdown. None of the sensors which are currently in use can meet all the requirement of high sensitivity, and real time measurement which is free from interference from other gamma …
Thermal Stratification In Liquid Metal Pools Under Cold Transients, Brendan Ward, Hitesh Bindra
Thermal Stratification In Liquid Metal Pools Under Cold Transients, Brendan Ward, Hitesh Bindra
Symposium on Advanced Sensors and Modeling Techniques for Nuclear Reactor Safety
Experimental results are presented for understanding the thermal stratification or mixing in a low Prandtl number, Pr, pool due to the injection of a colder (higher density) jet at the bottom of the pool. In liquid metals (Pr<<1), the higher volumetric thermal expansion enhances buoyant forces, aiding in thermal stratification while the low Pr extends the thermal boundary layer. Rayleigh backscattering with swept wavelength interferometry is used to generate the high fidelity distributed temperature data. The high spatial and temporal resolution of the sensors are required to capture the temperature gradient and fluctuations of temperature allowing more …<1
