Manipulating light at nano-scale is usually shadowed by the diffraction limit. Recently, plasmonics have emerged as a new technology that enables confining light at nano-scale. Using plasmonic structures, photonic devices can be shrunk from the micro-scale to the nano-scale. In this thesis, a novel structure to a plasmonic nano-filter is introduced and analyzed. The proposed nano-resonator has low loss, compact size and good sensing characteristics. A closed form model to the filter behavior is developed. Bulk CNT and graphene films form on SiC using a metal-catalyst-free thermal decomposition approach. In this work, the background vacuum pressure and temperature used in the decomposition process are varied to investigate their impact on the type and quality of carbon allotrope formed on the SiC substrate. The carbon nanostructure growth is performed using two approaches, both of which involve intense heating (1400-1700°C) of SiC under moderate vacuum conditions (0.01 - 0.00001 Torr). The first growth method uses a conventional graphite resistance furnace capable of annealing waferscale samples over 1700°C under vacuum. Electrospinning is a process by which polymer fibers can be produced using an electrostatically driven fluid jet. Electrospun fibers can be produced at the micro- or nano-scale and are, therefore, very promising for air filtration applications. However, because electrospun fibers are electrically charged, it is difficult to control the morphology of filtration media. Fiber size, alignment and uniformity are very important factors that affect filter performance. The focus of this project is to understand the relationship between filter morphology and performance and to develop new methods to create filtration media with optimum morphology.
