Criterion For An Oscillatory Charged Jet During The Bubble Spinning Process, Ji-Huan He, H.Y. Kong Jan 2014

Criterion For An Oscillatory Charged Jet During The Bubble Spinning Process, Ji-Huan He, H.Y. Kong

Ji-Huan He

The oscillatory diameter of the charged jet during the bubble electrospinning results in beads on the obtained nanofibers. We demonstrate that the applied voltage and the initial flow rate of the jet are the crucial parameters that are necessary to control morphology of the nanofibers. We also find that there is a criterion for production of smooth nanofibers without beads. The theory developed in this paper can be extended to the classical electrospinning and the blown bubble-spinning.

Structure And Properties Of Polypropylene-Nanoclay Composites, Raghavendra R. Hegde Dr Nov 2013

Structure And Properties Of Polypropylene-Nanoclay Composites, Raghavendra R. Hegde Dr

Raghavendra R Hegde Dr

The structure, morphology and mechanical properties of polypropylene-nanoclay composites with 1 to 15 wt.% nanoclay additives were investigated. Mixture of intercalated and exfoliated morphology was observed in nanocomposites. At higher weight percentage reinforcement (10–15 wt.%), up to 67 % improvement in tensile modulus is observed. At higher weight percentage, exclusion of clay additives at the boundary of spherulites was observed. This study illustrates that along with the thermodynamic driving force, spherulite formation also drives the ultimate morphology

Investigation Of The Morphology Of Polypropylene-Nanoclay Nanocomposites, Raghavendra R. Hegde Dr Sep 2013

Investigation Of The Morphology Of Polypropylene-Nanoclay Nanocomposites, Raghavendra R. Hegde Dr

Raghavendra R Hegde Dr

The morphology development in polypropylene − nanoclay composites with different weight percentages of nanoclay additives was studied using a combination of wide-angle X-ray diffraction, small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), polarized optical microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. SAXS studies showed an increase in long period with increase in additive weight percentage. Thermal analysis showed that even if the clay platelets are not completely exfoliated they can act as effective nucleating agents. Studies indicated that the ultimate morphology formation is influenced by both the thermodynamics of mixing and crystallization and spherulite formation. During spherulite growth, unenclosed clay platelets were excluded at the spherulite …

The Impact Of Controlled Solvent Exposure On The Morphology, Structure And Function Of Bulk Heterojunction Solar Cells, Raghavendra R. Hegde Dr Dec 2012

The Impact Of Controlled Solvent Exposure On The Morphology, Structure And Function Of Bulk Heterojunction Solar Cells, Raghavendra R. Hegde Dr

Raghavendra R Hegde Dr

Films of poly(3-hexyl thiophene) (P3HT):[6,6]-phenyl C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) were controllably exposed to CS2 vapor in a column with a linear solvent vapor pressure gradient. Changes in the morphology of the P3HT:PCBM thin film were monitored and correlated to the ability of this thin film to act as the active layer in an organic solar cell. The results show that the crystallinity and crystal size of the P3HT increase initially with solvent vapor pressure and annealing time, but longer exposure to solvent decreases P3HT crystallinity and photovoltaic efficiency. Neutron reflectivity indicates that the PCBM segregates to the Si substrate …

The Miscibility And Depth Profile Of Pcbm In P3ht: Thermodynamic Information To Improve Organic Photovoltaics, Raghavendra R. Hegde Dr Apr 2012

The Miscibility And Depth Profile Of Pcbm In P3ht: Thermodynamic Information To Improve Organic Photovoltaics, Raghavendra R. Hegde Dr

Raghavendra R Hegde Dr

Recent work has shown that poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) and the surface-functionalized fullerene 1-(3-methyloxycarbonyl)propyl(1-phenyl[6,6])C(61) (PCBM) are much more miscible than originally thought, and the evidence of this miscibility requires a return to understanding the optimal morphology and structure of organic photovoltaic active layers. This manuscript describes the results of experiments that were designed to provide quantitative thermodynamic information on the miscibility, interdiffusion, and depth profile of P3HT : PCBM thin films that are formed by thermally annealing initial bilayers. It is found that the resultant thin films consist of a 'bulk' layer that is not influenced by the air or substrate surface. …

Insights Into The Power Law Relationships That Describe Mass Deposition Rates During Electrospinning, Jonathan J. Stanger, Nick Tucker, Simon Fullick, Mathieu Sellier, Mark P. Staiger

Jonathan J Stanger

This work explores how in electrospinning, mass deposition rate and electric current relate to applied voltage and electrode separation, factors give a range of applied electric fields. Mass deposition rate was measured by quantifying the rate of dry fibre deposited over time. Electric current was measured using a current feedback from the high voltage supply. The deposition of fibre was observed to occur at a constant rate for deposition times of up to 30 min. Both the mass deposition rate and electric current were found to vary with the applied voltage according to a power law. The relationship between the …

Manipulation Of Electrospun Fibres In Flight: The Principle Of Superposition Of Electric Fields As A Control Method, Nurfaizey A. Hamid, Jonathan J. Stanger, Nick Tucker, Andrew Wallace, Mark P. Staiger

Jonathan J Stanger

This study investigates the magnitude of movement of the area of deposition of electrospun fibres in response to an applied auxiliary electric field. The auxiliary field is generated by two pairs of rod electrodes positioned adjacent and parallel to the line of flight of the spun fibre. The changes in shape of the deposition area and the degree of movement of the deposition area are quantified by optical scanning and image analysis. A linear response was observed between the magnitude of movement of the deposition area and voltage difference between the auxiliary and deposition electrodes. A squeezing effect which changed …

Nanosized Molecular Sieves Utilized As An Environmentally Friendly Alternative To Antioxidants For Lubricant Oils, Eng-Poh Ng Dr.

Eng-Poh Ng

Lubricants play a significant part in current environmental considerations since they are an integral and indispensable component of modern technology. The production, application and disposal of the lubricants have to follow increasingly strict requirements for protecting the environment and living organisms. In this respect, molecular sieve (LTL type zeolite) is investigated as a potential environmentally friendly alternative to traditional antioxidant additives for lubricant oils. Accelerated oxidation experiments using pure base oil and additivated base oil in the presence of the LTL molecular sieve are carried out in parallel, and the oxidation processes are monitored by FT-IR spectroscopy, spectrophotometry, chromatography, total …

Micro- To Macroscopic Observations Of Mnalpo-5 Nanocrystal Growth In Ionic-Liquid Media, Eng-Poh Ng Dr.

Eng-Poh Ng

Micro- and macroscopic studies of nucleation and growth processes of MnAlPO-5 nanosized crystals under ionothermal synthesis conditions are reported herein. The samples treated at 150 8C were extracted from the reaction mixture at various stages of crystallization, and characterized by XRD; SEM; thermogravimetric analysis (TGA); 31P and 27Al solid-state magic angle spinning (MAS) NMR, Raman, UV/Vis, and X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF). The starting raw materials (alumina, manganese, and phosphorous) were dissolved completely in the ionic liquid and transformed into an amorphous solid after 5 h of ionothermal treatment. This amorphous solid then undergoes structural changes over the following 5–25 h, …

Optical Properties Of Photopolymer Layers Doped With Aluminophosphate Nanocrystals, Eng-Poh Ng Dr.

Eng-Poh Ng

The optical properties of photopolymer layers consisting of an acrylamide-based matrix and microporous aluminophosphate nanocrystals of AEI type are investigated. The compatibility of the photopolymer doped with the nanoparticles is studied. The surface and volume properties of the layers with different levels of doping with microporous nanocrystals are characterized. The effective refractive indices and absorption coefficients of the doped photopolymer layers are determined and used to calculate the refractive index and porosity of pure AEI nanoparticles used as dopants. Volume transmission gratings were recorded in the doped photopolymer layers at different spatial frequencies. By spatial monitoring of the characteristic Raman …

Effect Of Salts On The Electrospinning Of Poly(Vinyl Alcohol), Jonathan J. Stanger, Nick Tucker, Mark P. Staiger, Kerry Kirwan, Stuart Coles, Daniel Jacobs, Nigel Larsen

Jonathan J Stanger

Fibres with a diameter in the nanometer range were electrospun from aqueous poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVOH). In order to improve the mass deposition rate and decrease the final fibre diameter salts (NaCl, LiCl, LiBr and LiF) were added to the solution. The aim was to increase the charge density and hence increase the electrostatic forces on the fluid. It was found that with increasing salt concentration the charge density did increase. However the mass deposition rate was found to decrease and the final fibre diameter was found to increase. The decrease in mass deposition rate is explained by considering the concept …

Effect Of Charge Density On The Taylor Cone In Electrospinning, Jonathan J. Stanger, Nick Tucker, Kerry Kirwan, Stuart Coles, Daniel Jacobs, Mark P. Staiger Jan 2009

Effect Of Charge Density On The Taylor Cone In Electrospinning, Jonathan J. Stanger, Nick Tucker, Kerry Kirwan, Stuart Coles, Daniel Jacobs, Mark P. Staiger

Jonathan J Stanger

A detailed understanding of charge density and its origins during the electrospinning process is desirable for developing new electrospinnable polymer-solvent systems and ensuring mathematical models of the process are accurate. In this work, two different approaches were taken to alter the charge density in order to measure its effect on the Taylor cone, mass deposition rate and initial jet diameter. It was found that an increase in charge density results in a decrease in the mass deposition rate and initial jet diameter. A theory is proposed for this behaviour in that an increase in charge density leads to the tip …

The Effect Of Electrode Configuration And Substrate Material On The Mass Deposition Rate Of Electrospinning, Jonathan J. Stanger, Nick Tucker, Andrew Wallace, Nigel Larsen, Mark P. Staiger, Roger Reeves Jan 2009

The Effect Of Electrode Configuration And Substrate Material On The Mass Deposition Rate Of Electrospinning, Jonathan J. Stanger, Nick Tucker, Andrew Wallace, Nigel Larsen, Mark P. Staiger, Roger Reeves

Jonathan J Stanger

Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVOH) was electrospun using different methods to charge the polymer solution. A positive high voltage relative to the collecting electrode significantly increased the fibre deposition rate. Electron microscopy showed that approximately half of the increase in fibre mass was due to thicker fibres being deposited. The current flowing from the grounded electrode was measured to determine the charge carried on the PVOH jet. This showed that for a positive voltage charging condition there is a much larger current and hence more charge carriers generated in the PVOH solution. As a result, more mass is ejected from the Taylor …

Preparation Of Wo3 Nanoparticles Using Cetyl Trimethyl Ammonium Bromide Supermolecular Template, Nilofar Asim, S. Radiman, M.A. Bin Yarmo

Nilofar Asim

WO3 is one of the most interested metal oxides because of its application as catalysts, sensors, electrochromic devices, ceramic, solar cell, pigments and so on. More investigation is needed to find the good and low cost method for preparation of WO3 nanoparticles with uniform morphology and narrow distribution using a surfactant mediated method. Approach: In this study, the synthesis of WO3 nanoparticles was accomplished using a cationic surfactant (cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide) as the organic supermolecular template and WCl6 and NH4 OH as the inorganic precursor and counter ion source, respectively. The effects of reaction temperature and surfactant concentration in …

Selective Capture Of Water Using Microporous Adsorbents To Increase The Lifetime Of Lubricants, Eng-Poh Ng, Luc Delmotte, Svetlana Mintova

Eng-Poh Ng

Eco-recycling towards an increase of the lifetime of lubricating mineral oil by selective capturing of water with nanosized microporous aluminophosphate and aluminosilicate materials is reported. Quantitative water measurements of oxidized lubricating oil before and after treatment with microporous materials were carried out by FT-IR spectroscopy combined with Karl Fischer titration method. The high selectivity of the nanosized aluminophosphate to water without adsorbing other additives in comparison to nanosized aluminosilicates that are adsorbing altogether polar oxidation products, ionic additives and water are revealed. A removal of nearly 98 % of moisture from the lubricating oil at ambient condition is achieved, which …

About 10 to 20 % increase in tensile …

Charge Transfer Mechanisms In Electrospinning, Jonathan J. Stanger Jan 2008

Charge Transfer Mechanisms In Electrospinning, Jonathan J. Stanger

Jonathan J Stanger

Electrospinning is a method of producing nano structured material from a polymer solution or melt using high strength electric fields. It is a process that has yet to find extensive industrial application yet shows promise if obstacles such as low rate of production overcome perhaps by more complete theoretical modelling. This work examines the effects of adding an ionic salt to a solution of poly(vinyl alcohol) in water. The direct effect was an increase the charge density and electric current. It was found that an increase in charge density decreases the mass deposition rate and forms a thinner initial jet. …

Removal Of Organic Dyes From Industrial Wastewaters Using Uv/H2o2, Uv/H2o2/Fe (Ii), Uv/H2o2/Fe (Iii) Processes (Persian Paper), Mir Saeed Seyed Dorraji

Mir saeed Seyed Dorraji

UV/H2O2, UV/H2O2/Fe (II) and UV/H2O2/Fe (III) processes are very effective in removing pollutants from wastewater and can be used for treatment of dyestuff units wastewaters. In this study, Rhodamine B was used as a typical organic dye. Rhodamine B has found wide applications in wax, leather, and paper industries. The results from this study showed that this dye was degradable in the presence of hydrogen peroxide under UV-C irradiation (30W mercury light) and Photo-Fenton process. The dye was resistant to UV irradiation. In the absence of UV irradiation, the decolorization efficiency was very negligible in the presence of hydrogen. Theeffects …

Supercritical Water Oxidation Process And Its Application In Treatment Of Industrial Wastewater (Persian Paper), N. Daneshvar, S. Aber, Mir Saeed Seyed Dorraji, M. Zarei, M. H. Rasoulifard

Mir saeed Seyed Dorraji

In the last two decades, supercritical water has become an interesting medium for chemistry. One of its most investigated applications is the oxidative treatment of aqueous wastes containing organic compound in the so-called “supercritical water oxidation”. In this technology, supercritical water acts as a non-polar solvent. Consequently, even non-polar organic compounds and gases like oxygen become completely miscible with the supercritical fluid. During the supercritical water oxidation (SCWO) process, the organic compounds react completely with oxidant –mostly oxygen- in a single phase reaction forming CO2 and H2O. The hetero-atoms present in the organic wastes are transformed into the mineral acids. …

Alpo-18 Seed Layers And Films By Secondary Growth, Lubomira Tosheva, Eng-Poh Ng, Svetlana Mintova, Manfred Holzl, Till H. Metzger, Aidan M. Doyle Jan 2008

Alpo-18 Seed Layers And Films By Secondary Growth, Lubomira Tosheva, Eng-Poh Ng, Svetlana Mintova, Manfred Holzl, Till H. Metzger, Aidan M. Doyle

Eng-Poh Ng

AlPO-18 layers were prepared on Si wafers via spin-coating or the Langmuir−Blodgett (LB) method using nanosized crystals. Multilayers were deposited by spin-coating, whereas the seeds assembled by the LB technique were monolayers. The seeded layers were not stable upon secondary growth under microwave radiation, and no films were formed on the supports. Dense AlPO-18 films could be obtained by secondary growth after stabilization of the seed layers by adding prehydrolyzed tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) to the colloidal AlPO-18 suspension prior to support seeding. The stabilized seed layers and the grown AlPO-18 films were stable. The structure and the morphology of the films …

Sulphated Almcm-41: Mesoporous Solid Brønsted Acid Catalyst For Dibenzoylation Of Biphenyl, Eng-Poh Ng, Hadi Nur, Mohd Nazlan Mohd Muhid, Halimaton Hamdan

Eng-Poh Ng

Sulphated mesoporous solid Brønsted acid catalyst (SO4-AlMCM-41) was prepared by impregnation of sulphuric acid on the surface of H-AlMCM-41. Characterization of SO4-AlMCM-41 by pyridine adsorption studies and 27Al MAS NMR showed that the presence of Brønsted acidity was correlated with octahedrally coordinated aluminium and solvent environment. Catalytic study demonstrated that the SO4-AlMCM-41 catalyst has a higher activity in the dibenzoylation of biphenyl with benzoyl chloride than sulphuric acid, H-AlMCM-41 and sulphated amorphous silica.
