Prediction Performance And Generalization Of The Empirical Estimation Of Rockmass Deformation Modulus Based On Rockmass Classification Systems, Innovative Research Publications Irp India, Muhammad Tahir, Noor Mohammad

Innovative Research Publications IRP India

The deformation modulus of rock mass can either be measured using in-situ field tests or estimated empirically. However, the empirical method is an attractive and open choice for researchers to estimate the deformation modulus of rock mass economically, efficiently and accurately and many researchers have proposed empirical equations for estimation the deformation modulus of rock mass based rock mass classification systems. In this paper attempt has been made to collect and review some these published empirical equations developed so far based on Rock Mass Rating, Geological Strength Index, and Q rock mass classification systems. These empirical equations based on each ...

A New Process To Upgrade Ilmenite To Synthetic Rutile, Fathi Habashi Oct 2014

A New Process To Upgrade Ilmenite To Synthetic Rutile, Fathi Habashi

Fathi Habashi

Ilmenite occurs in black sand at the mouth of great rivers as in India, or as massive deposits like in Quebec Province in Canada. It is unsuitable for processing into pigment or for metal production because of its high iron content and its low grade. Pyrometallurgical and hydrometallurgical methods have been developed to cope with this problem which resulted in the production of two commercial products that became known as synthetic rutile and Sorelslag. Attempts are also underway to produce TiO2 pigment directly from ilmenite. This report presents a newly developed process called the Magpie process, which enables the production ...

History Of Innovation In Extractive Metallurgy, Fathi Habashi

Fathi Habashi

People learned melting of ores to get metals since ancient times but the use of aqueous solutions for this purpose was introduced relatively recently in the Middle Ages. The most recent technology, however, came when electric current became available on commercial scale towards the middle of the nineteenth century. The present article records in general terms the development in pyro- , hydro-, and electrometallurgy

Catalytic Or Thermal Reversed Flow Combustion Of Coal Mine Ventilation Air Methane: What Is Better Choice And When?, Krzysztof J. Gosiewski Jan 2014

Catalytic Or Thermal Reversed Flow Combustion Of Coal Mine Ventilation Air Methane: What Is Better Choice And When?, Krzysztof J. Gosiewski

Krzysztof Gosiewski

The paper presents a comparison of the two options of reverse flow reactors destined for the utilization of coal mine ventilation air methane by catalytic (CFRR) or thermal (TFRR) combustion. It has been shown that both solutions have advantages and drawbacks. The use of the catalyst significantly decreases reactor temperature and makes the operation becomes to be autothermal for methane concentrations lower than in TFRR (even as low as over 0.06 vol.%). On the other hand when methane is combusted, particularly if average concentration is higher than ca. 0.4 vol.% the maximum temperature in the reactor appears to ...

Evidence Of The Existence Of Cathodic And Anodic Zones During The Leaching Of Minerals And Metals, Fathi Habashi Jan 2014

Evidence Of The Existence Of Cathodic And Anodic Zones During The Leaching Of Minerals And Metals, Fathi Habashi

Fathi Habashi

It is accepted worldwide that the dissolution of minerals in some cases, is an electrochemical process where anodic and cathodic reactions take place. There are many parameters, such as agent concentration, that directly affect the dissolution process. The rate of leaching of minerals may differ depending on the oxygen concentration. In this paper, the existence of anodic and cathodic zones on themineral surface during the dissolution/leaching of minerals andmetals has been presentedwith some differentworks. It isworthmentioning that a good number of published papers have experimentally demonstrated the existence of anodic and cathodic areas on the mineral surface.

Hydrometallurgy Over The Years (Geçmişten Günümüze Hidrometalurji), Fathi Habashi Jan 2014

Hydrometallurgy Over The Years (Geçmişten Günümüze Hidrometalurji), Fathi Habashi

Fathi Habashi

Geçmişten Günümüze Hidrometalurji Hydrometallurgy Over The Years*, Fathi Habashi

Fathi Habashi

Thousands of years ago people had learned how to build furnaces and use fire to melt rocks and produce metals but the use of aqueous solutions for ore processing came much later, mainly at the time of the alchemists when acids and alkalies became known and used. Modern hydrometallurgy, however, can be traced back to the end of the 19th century when two major operations were discovered: the cyanidation process for gold and silver extraction and the Bayer process for bauxite treatment. Later, in the 1940s, a breakthrough came during the Manhattan Project in USA in connection with uranium extraction ...

Pyrite: The Strategic Mineral That Became An Industrial Nuisance, Fathi Habashi Nov 2013

Pyrite: The Strategic Mineral That Became An Industrial Nuisance, Fathi Habashi

Fathi Habashi

Pyrite, known since antiquity, had at one time a great strategic importance because it was the main raw material for making elemental sulfur for gun powder manufacture and for making SO2 for sulfuric acid production. However, when other sources of cheap elemental sulfur became available, pyrite not only lost its importance but became a nuisance for the metallurgical industry because of problems associated with its disposal. At present only pyrite-containing gold is treated by a variety of methods to recover gold.

Thermal Combustion Of Lean Methane–Air Mixtures: Flow Reversal Research And Demonstration Reactor Model And Its Validation, Krzysztof J. Gosiewski

Krzysztof Gosiewski

Problem of the coal mine shafts ventilation air methane (VAM) utilization is briefly presented. A research and demonstration plant experiments were carried out as the first step to a future industrial application. The plant contained a thermal flow reversal reactor (TFRR) as the main unit where lean methane–air mix- ture is combusted. The study consisted of the plant experiments and mathematical model simulations as well. The paper presents the mathematical model description and its experimental validation based on comparison of the model results with measured plant data. The aim of the paper is to assess whether dynamic, one dimensional ...
