Multiscale Topology Optimization With A Strong Dependence On Complementary Energy, Dustin Dean Bielecki Dec 2022

Multiscale Topology Optimization With A Strong Dependence On Complementary Energy, Dustin Dean Bielecki

All Dissertations

A discrete approach introduces a novel deep learning approach for generating fine resolution structures that preserve all the information from the topology optimization (TO). The proposed approach utilizes neural networks (NNs) that map the desired engineering properties to seed for determining optimized structure. This framework relies on utilizing parameters such as density and nodal deflections to predict optimized topologies. A three-stage NN framework is employed for the discrete approach to reduce computational runtime while maintaining physics constraints.

A continuous representation that uses complementary energy (CE) methods to solve a representative element's homogenized properties consists of an embedded structure that is …

Multiple Objective Function Optimization And Trade Space Analysis, Yifan Xu Dec 2022

Multiple Objective Function Optimization And Trade Space Analysis, Yifan Xu

All Theses

Optimization can assist in obtaining the best possible solution to a design problem by varying related variables under given constraints. It can be applied in many practical applications, including engineering, during the design process. The design time can be further reduced by the application of automated optimization methods. Since the required resource and desired benefit can be translated to a function of variables, optimization can be viewed as the process of finding the variable values to reach the function maxima or minima. A Multiple Objective Optimization (MOO) problem is when there is more than one desired function that needs to …

Tunable Filtration Of Particles During Dip-Coating, Connor Copeland Sep 2022

Tunable Filtration Of Particles During Dip-Coating, Connor Copeland

All Theses

When a solid substrate is withdrawn from a liquid bath a thin coating is deposited whose thickness is given by the Landau-Levich-Derjaguin (LLD) law. We perform an experimental study of dip coating of particle suspensions showing that particles of a given size can become entrained in the meniscus by the competition between viscous and surface tension forces. This is called capillary filtration and can be used as a tunable dynamic filter. For single particle suspensions, filtration can be in terms of either clumps or single particles, with the relevant entrainment points depending upon the rheology of the working fluid, either …

An Investigation Into The Velocity-Dependence Of The Coefficient Of Friction Between Concrete And Maraging Steel, Trace A. Duncan Aug 2022

An Investigation Into The Velocity-Dependence Of The Coefficient Of Friction Between Concrete And Maraging Steel, Trace A. Duncan

Theses and Dissertations

This work investigates the velocity-dependent coefficient of friction between concrete and 300 Maraging steel over short displacements. A modified torsional Hopkinson bar is utilized for rotating thin-walled steel rings in contact with a concrete disk under static precompression. Rotational velocity is varied between tests to determine the velocity dependence of the friction coefficient. Normal force is varied between certain tests to determine the pressure dependence of the friction coefficient between the concrete and steel. Three different types of concrete are tested to deduce any composition effect on the friction coefficient. Dry and greased conditions’ impact on the friction coefficient are …

Creep Behavior Of A Ti-Based Multi-Principal Element Alloy, Benjamin Elbrecht Aug 2022

Creep Behavior Of A Ti-Based Multi-Principal Element Alloy, Benjamin Elbrecht

All Theses

Abstract

The understanding of microstructural damage mechanisms is the foundation of better understanding existing materials and future material development. There are significant challenges to measuring these damage mechanisms in-situ as continuous observation of the state of the microstructure is difficult or impossible for many experimental setups. This thesis presents a method for measuring grain boundary sliding (GBS) and local strain concentrations in-situ via a Heaviside function based algorithm. GBS is the shearing of two grains along their shared grain boundary and is a common damage mechanism in creep which presents as a discontinuity that can be measured with a Heaviside …

Foundations For Finite-State Modelling Of A Two-Dimensional Airfoil That Reverses Direction, Jake Michael Oscar Welsh Aug 2022

Foundations For Finite-State Modelling Of A Two-Dimensional Airfoil That Reverses Direction, Jake Michael Oscar Welsh

McKelvey School of Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Current 3-D finite-state wake models are incapable of simulating a maneuver in which the sign of the free-stream velocity changes direction and the rotor enters its own wake -- as might occur in the case of a helicopter which ascends and then descends. It is the purpose of this work to create a 2-D finite-state wake model which is capable of handling changes in free-stream direction as a precursor to development of a 3-D model that can do the same.

The 2-D finite-state model used for reentry modifications is an existing model created by Peters, Johnson, and Karunamoorthy. By the …

Tunable Passive Shock And Vibration Isolators For Rotational Isolation, Chase B. Lemaire Jul 2022

Tunable Passive Shock And Vibration Isolators For Rotational Isolation, Chase B. Lemaire

LSU Master's Theses

Shock and vibration isolation are a critical need in helmets, which are widely used to protect athletes, workers, soldiers, and astronauts. Passive vibration isolation systems are a good option when mass and volume should be minimized and when the experienced loadings can be predicted. However, it is frequently challenging to find materials and structures which exhibit the optimal vibration and impact isolation properties for an application. As a case study illustrating a novel design paradigm for rotational shock absorption, a family of optimal solutions for the physical properties of American football helmets is presented. Lumped parameter Simulink models simulate a …

Master's Theses

Legged robotics creates the demand for high torque compact actuators able to develop high instantaneous torque. Proprioceptive actuator design theory is a design theory that removes the need for a torque feedback device and relies on the stiffness in the leg for absorbing the high Ground Impact Forces created by walking locomotion. It utilizes a high torque density motor paired with a gearbox with a high gear ratio for torque multiplication. Previously work has been done to design a proprioceptive actuator design that utilizes a planetary gearbox to create a modular low-cost actuator for legged robotics. The purpose of this …

Structural Sizing Of Post-Buckled Thermally Stressed Stiffened Panels, Walid Arsalane May 2022

Structural Sizing Of Post-Buckled Thermally Stressed Stiffened Panels, Walid Arsalane

Theses and Dissertations

Design of thermoelastic structures can be highly counterintuitive due to design-dependent loading and impact of geometric nonlinearity on the structural response. Thermal loading generates in-plane stresses in a restrained panel, but the presence of geometric nonlinearity creates an extension-bending coupling that results in considerable transverse displacement and variation in stiffness characteristics, and these affects are enhanced in post-bucking regimes. Herein a methodology for structural sizing of thermally stressed post-buckled stiffened panels is proposed and applied for optimization of the blade and hat stiffeners using a gradient-based optimizer. The stiffened panels are subjected to uniform thermal loading and optimized for minimum …

Model Based Force Estimation And Stiffness Control For Continuum Robots, Vincent A. Aloi May 2022

Model Based Force Estimation And Stiffness Control For Continuum Robots, Vincent A. Aloi

Doctoral Dissertations

Continuum Robots are bio-inspired structures that mimic the motion of snakes, elephant trunks, octopus tentacles, etc. With good design, these robots can be naturally compliant and miniaturizable, which makes Continuum Robots ideal for traversing narrow complex environments. Their flexible design, however, prevents us from using traditional methods for controlling and estimating loading on rigid link robots.

In the first thrust of this research, we provided a novel stiffness control law that alters the behavior of an end effector during contact. This controller is applicable to any continuum robot where a method for sensing or estimating tip forces and pose exists. …

Examining The Different Snap-Through Characteristics Of Bistable Cfrp Composite Laminates, Vishrut Deshpande May 2022

Examining The Different Snap-Through Characteristics Of Bistable Cfrp Composite Laminates, Vishrut Deshpande

All Theses

Bistable carbon fiber composites, whose bistability arises from having asymmetric fiber layouts in different layers, have shown immense potential for use in shape morphing and adaptive structure applications. While many studies in this field focus on these composite laminates’ external shapes at the two stable states, their snap-through behavior of shifting from one stable shape to the other remains a critical aspect to be investigated in complete detail. Moreover, symmetric loading conditions have been extensively studied based on the classical lamination theory, but the asymmetric loading conditions received far less attention. Therefore, this study examines an asymmetric, localized point load …

A Computational Approach For The Estimation Of Elastic Behavior Of Metal Matrix Composites, Emmanuel Michalakis

ME 4233/6233 Fundamentals of FEA

Composite materials are being widely used in many industries for their properties and efficiency. The current work presents a computational approach that can estimate the elastic behavior of metal composites and porous materials using finite element models of representative volume elements (RVEs) which have been used to test and design particulate composite materials. The required size of the RVE for the determination of elastic properties, the effects of the elastic modulus fraction Einc/Emat on the homogenized elasticity and the convergence of the homogenized properties E11, E22 and E33 with the size of the RVE is explored.

Computational Study Of Internal Flow, Near Nozzle And External Spray Of A Gdi Injector Under Flash-Boiling Conditions, Chinmoy Krushna Mohapatra Mar 2022

Computational Study Of Internal Flow, Near Nozzle And External Spray Of A Gdi Injector Under Flash-Boiling Conditions, Chinmoy Krushna Mohapatra

Doctoral Dissertations

The early and late portions of transient fuel injection have proven to be a rich area
of research, especially since the end of injection can cause a disproportionate amount
of emissions in direct injection internal combustion engines. While simulating the
internal flow of fuel injectors, valve opening and closing events are the perennial
challenges. A typical adaptive-mesh CFD simulation is extremely computationally
expensive, as the small gap between the needle valve and the seat requires very
small cells to be resolved properly. Capturing complete closure usually involves a
topological change in the computational domain. Furthermore, Internal Combustion
Engines(ICE) operating with …

Synthesis, Fabrication, And Assembly Of Mesoscale Polymer Filaments, Dylan M. Barber Mar 2022

Synthesis, Fabrication, And Assembly Of Mesoscale Polymer Filaments, Dylan M. Barber

Doctoral Dissertations

Mesoscale materials, with feature sizes in the range of one hundred nanometers to tens of micrometers, are ubiquitous in Nature. In organisms, mesoscale building blocks connect the properties of underlying molecular and nanoscructures to those of macroscale, organism-scale materials through hierarchical assemblies of recurring structural motifs. The collective action of large numbers of mesoscale features can afford stunning features like the structural color of the morpho butterfly wing, calcium ion-mediated movement in muscle, and wood structures like xylem that can support enormous external compressive loads and negative internal pressure to transport nutrients throughout an organism. In synthetic systems, the design, …

Implementation Of Multiscale Mechanisms In Finite Element Analysis Of Active Composite Structures, Amany G. Micheal Prof., Yehia Bahei El Din Prof.

Centre for Advanced Materials

Composite structures reinforced with electrically active filaments are modeled with the finite element method while the underlying thermo-electromechanical coupling phenomena and damage are taken into consideration. At the outset, structural analysis is performed with a general-purpose finite element code and a special material routine, which propagates local phenomena to the overall scale is utilized. The material routine implements an interactive, multiscale analysis, which provides seamless integration of the mechanics at the composite’s micro, macro, and structural length scales. The interface between the multiscale material routine and the finite element code is made through nonmechanical strains caused by damage, and piezo/pyro-electric …

Source Data For Self-Spinning Filaments For Autonomously Linked Microfibers, Dylan M. Barber, Todd S. Emrick, Gregory Grason, Alfred Crosby

Data and Datasets

Filamentous bundles are ubiquitous in Nature, achieving highly adaptive functions and structural integrity from assembly of diverse mesoscale supramolecular elements. Engineering routes to synthetic, topologically integrated analogs demands precisely coordinated control of multiple filaments’ shapes and positions, a major challenge when performed without complex machinery or labor-intensive processing. Here, we demonstrate a photocreasing design that encodes local curvature and twist into mesoscale polymer filaments, enabling their programmed transformation into target 3-dimensional geometries. Importantly, patterned photocreasing of filament arrays drives autonomous spinning to form linked filament bundles that are highly entangled and structurally robust. In individual filaments, photocreases unlock paths 16 …
